The Wyck Recommendation: Anderson’s Frozen Custard Rating: 4.4/5 Custard So Good I Questioned My Personality
Intro Scene I’m not a dessert guy. Not even close. I’ll skip birthday cake, ignore the gelato menu, and politely decline your grandma’s cookies. But then I met this frozen custard. For the record, frozen custard isn’t ice cream. It’s creamier, denser, and made with egg yolks. It’s served a little warmer than ice cream so the texture stays smooth and rich, not icy or fluffy. Think soft serve with a college degree. One bite and I was staring into the swirl like it held answers about my past lives. Spoiler: it did.
What Was Ordered Chocolate-Vanilla Swirl Frozen Custard (cup) A few bites of the Peanut Butter Custard (and immediate emotional collapse) The swirl was dense, silky, richer than ice cream but lighter than gelato. Like soft serve that took a sabbatical to Italy and came back with confidence. The peanut butter? Divine. Like eating a Reese’s that became sentient.
Service Commentary It ran like a well-oiled teen-powered machine. Everyone was busy and hyper-focused, but still friendly. No slackers, no confusion, no chaos. Just an army of night-shift warriors serving sugar with speed. Even the guy wiping counters had purpose.
Vibe Check Open-late buzz. Garage doors wide open. Kids running across the lot like it’s a family reunion. Parents exhaling. Friends lingering. The energy was warm, welcoming, a little nostalgic. The kind of place you drive past and instantly regret not stopping.
The Space Itself The building looks like a diner mated with a fire station. Bold, boxy, and clean as hell. The interior had fast food-style counters and a layout built for high turnover, but there wasn’t a single sticky table or overflowing bin. Bright lighting, smooth operation, no weird smells. It’s a soft-serve cathedral.
About the Neighborhood Smack in the middle of suburban sprawl. Huge parking lot, easy in and out. No scenic views, no charm, just efficiency. And that’s honestly all you want at 10:30pm when the craving hits. You’re here for the swirl, not the skyline.
Hits and Misses ✓ Peanut Butter Custard — genuinely unforgettable ✓ Chocolate-Vanilla Swirl — dense and addictive ✓ Staff — sharp, efficient, and upbeat ✓ Clean open space — built for busy nights ✗ Didn’t try the savory menu yet ✗ Not a “hangout” vibe if you’re looking for slow and moody
Final Verdict Anderson’s didn’t just win me over. It made me question who I’ve been all these years avoiding dessert. This isn’t ice cream. It’s something else entirely. Smooth, dense, and oddly emotional. I’d come back every night if I lived nearby. I don’t even like sweets. But I’ll never drive past this place again without stopping.

Read moreI typically don’t do reviews, however, my recent experience with disrespectful customer service, specifically from an assistant manager, led me to write one.
I ordered an ice cream in store and it was pretty busy, which is understandable on a Friday an hour before closing. My friend and I would not have minded to wait on the line until a cashier was available.
However, when it was our turn, the cashier who was an assistant manager glanced at us at the dessert line and proceed to help a family at the food service line that had just arrived. The family noticed that we were there before them and called her out, saying that we were at the other line waiting to order before them, to which she replied "That's okay." She then proceeded to get their order.
This was really disrespectful to my friend and I as she even got called out for skipping us at the front of the line but disregarded their statement. While I could understand that she might have helped them because they had a bigger order, it happened a second time.
After we had ordered with another cashier, we decided that we would order something from food service in which we were the only ones there. As we were waiting, she had glanced over at us again at the other line and decided to ask the woman in the dessert line if she was helped. This did not happen to us before when she helped the family.
Again, while I do understand that it can get busy at times and I do not mind waiting, realizing that your customers are waiting in line and proceeding to ignore them even after being called out is: 1. extremely rude 2. poorly representing the store as a person of authority (her being an assistant manager) in disrespectful customer service being that this situation occurred twice in the span of...
Read moreA WNY staple for almost 80 years! Mr & Mrs. Carl & Greta Anderson, opened the first Anderson’s Frozen Custard in the Bronx, NY. They say that missing family they returned to Buffalo, to open their second custard stand on Kenmore Avenue in 1947. From there they expanded to other locations, such as Tonawanda (pictured in the attached pics), Amherst, Williamsville, Lancaster...
The Amherst location lacks some of the initial charm of some of the older locations but is clean, updated and comfortable. There is a drive-thru window and outdoor seating when the weather permits. You order at the front counter and they call your name when your food is ready for pick-up. This is not a 5 star roast beef, but it's considerably better than an Arby's etc., as this is 100% natural beef (so 4 of 5 stars for me). Moist and delicious every time with Kaiser or the traditional kimmelwick roll options (horseradish available too). My last trip it tasted great, but was cooked a little more than I like (med rare - med). Their pickles are pretty amazing too.
Curly fries (good not great), salads, soup, chicken and many other options available. Ice cream cones (hard and soft serve)and even delicious ice cream cakes (my favorite) are available to go. Great for parties etc. Fountain drinks (you fill - refill) are available with Pepsi and lesser known but unique flavor options including loganberry.
If you're hungry and in the area of one of...
