Tucked away in a cozy little shop in Brookfield's Galleria West shopping mall is a warm and inviting bakery cafe.
My wife and I are regular patrons of this establishment, and we absolutely love the woman, Judy (I believe is her name), who regularly attends our needs. Her grandmother-like-nature makes you feel at home as you are encouraged to devour their never-ending selection of delicious European style pastries.
My wife and I enjoy the Miami (Guava flavored) and the Apple pastries, but you also cannot go wrong with their savory options as well.
While at times there can be a wait due to the heavier traffic as more individuals find out about this little known gem, it is important to note that the service the regular wait staff typically provides in conjunction with the quality of the food reminds us of the time we have spent overseas. A place where you can hide away from the hustle and bustle of the city and fold like butter into dough and become laminated within the present.
While this has been our typical experience, our most recent visit today was marked with an uneasy feeling as we were greeted by a new face, who was not as friendly and pushed everything along. She was short and to the point and would often cut off the regular customer service woman to answer for her. This made us unwilling to stay, and unsure of how likely we will be to return to a place we truly love. The rude and snippy behavior destroyed any semblance of an atmosphere that was derived from the feeling of going over to your grandma's house for some homemade goodies, and instead felt like someone hitting the eject button as you are flung your treats and coffee through a confetti cannon.
We can understand wanting to be able to service more patrons, but not at the expense of our favorite server and atmosphere doesn't...
Read moreFor patrons who want to support people with disabilities needing a service animal, I strongly recommend you NOT patronize this place. I was immediately told upon entering that my service dog could not come into the shop because of health code laws. I tried to explain that under ADA law my service dog could accompany me in their shop regardless of health code prohibitions. I was not listened to. What the owner of this business does not realize is that federal law prohibits this kind of discrimination. Furthermore, federal law trumps state laws regarding service animals. Not all disabilities are visible. If a person has a service animal, it is because they need one to navigate daily life. This business violated both the law and common decency with their behavior. Having someone insist the health department has deemed a service animal is violating health standards is, at the least, misinformed. Asking me to leave my service animal outside the shop while I place my order is a violation not only to me but to all people who have service animals. NO croissant is worth that...
Read moreI'll keep this short(er) since I already emailed the store with a more detailed review. Basically, I stopped in with a friend to have a cup of coffee and it was the worst coffee I'd ever had. The employee admitted that it wasn't a well received drink (very sweet) and instead of giving me a heads up when I ordered, she made the drink and warned me before I took a sip. She was correct, it was horrible. She was kind enough and offered to make me something else so I took her up on her offer. That gave me time to realize a lot of red flags in this place. No measuring was done so she likely over poured my syrups, no thermometers were used when steaming the milk (it was so hot, the milk started to break down and it was disgusting), and she didn't wipe down the milk nozzle which has milk caked on it. I emailed the store (owner?) and received a very curt reply. Apparently my opinion didn't matter. No worries. Lots of other coffee...
