A Hidden Gem in Altamont – Akanomi Japanese Sushi Restaurant
Don’t let the quaint exterior fool you—Akanomi in Altamont is a culinary treasure hiding in plain sight. We stopped in for lunch today and were completely blown away. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted by a warm, inviting atmosphere. The space is deceptively large, impeccably clean, and comfortably arranged with plenty of seating.
The service was top-notch. Our waiter was friendly, quick, and attentive without ever being intrusive—a rare and welcome balance. He made sure everything flowed smoothly, and our food arrived quickly and beautifully plated.
Now, let’s talk about the star of the show: the food. Everything we ordered was incredibly fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with care. The sushi was expertly rolled and melted in your mouth. Portions are generous—expect to spend around $25 to $35 per person, but you’ll leave absolutely satisfied. In fact, if you’re still hungry after a meal here, that’s on you!
Whether you’re a sushi lover or just dipping your toes into Japanese cuisine, Akanomi delivers an unforgettable dining experience that easily rivals higher-priced city spots. We’ll definitely be back—and soon.

The freshness and quality of the fish can be hit or miss. The texture is sometimes too soft, likely thanks to the thawing process (virtually all sashimi is frozen at some point during the shipping process - even the high grade tuna only available in Japan). However, the rolls can be interesting and they are beautifully presented.
Drinks list is limited with only one Japanese beer (Sapporo) available in 2 sizes. They also have Tsingtao, a nod to the Chinese owners. A handful of sake is also available, including unfiltered nigori.
Foodwise, the kani (crab) salad has a perfect mix of flavors and textures. The haru maki (fried spring rolls) is good too - peppery and Chinese like, but still tasty. Edamame, of course, are good - and a big potion for the price.
Look for the Tengu up on the wall. In Japan, Tengu is a long nosed god with a red face, but the fun part is in how he came to be. Rural Japanese in south Japan came across a shipwrecked sailor living in the woods. His sun burned face and big European nose made them think he was a god and the legend of Tengu was...
Read moreI went to Akanomi for the first time tonight and rate this place a solid three stars. I had high expectations since the rating of this place was quite high at 4.9 stars on google. If you are a seasoned client of sushi restaurants this place is good, but not great. The important thing is that the fish is fresh even if the preparation of the sushi is not amazing. The grilled squid had a nice char even though it was overcooked and chewier than it should have been. One of their signature sushi rolls, the Akanomi Tuna roll had an interesting flavor of pan seared tuna which sounds delicious but the execution was more of a smoky flavor over a char and mixture of sweet salty flavor. Perhaps what put this rating for me at three stars and not any higher was that that they served a stale dessert to me. My red bean ice cream was clumpy with icy and lumpy cream parts. They also served a stale black seasame mochi ice cream. I probably won't eat here again as there are many other sushi restaurants in the...
