My daughter has been transitioning to eating a more healthy lifestyle for the past few years. She and her boyfriend called and invited me to dinner at Toma-Tis, a Vegan Caribbean spot in Elmont. Now I really love Jamaican dishes, but wasn’t sure if the food would taste the same. I am not vegan, but I am trying to eat healthy as well. I was so excited to try this place after reading all the reviews and seeing the wide array of dishes on the menu.
From the moment I changed our reservations, they were so polite and accommodating. Upon arriving, you would never expect what a jewel this place is. They set up a table especially to accommodate our party and Yvonne, the owner, was very friendly and warm.
I ordered the Rasta Pasta, which was my favorite dish. It was so robust with flavor and the texture on point. I love the coconut sauce flavor with a touch of heat. I also had the stuffed sweet potato with chick peas and garlic sauce, delish.
My daughter and her boyfriend had the beef stew, creamed sweet potatoes, chicken wings, and mac and cheese. All the dishes were superb. The texture, appearance and flavors were on point. The portions were a good size, we ordered several dishes with plenty to share and still enough to take home.
Afterwards, we had the carrot cake for dessert. Wow!!! So Devine, it has to be one of the best carrot cakes I ever had.
After dinner, we had the opportunity to speak and spend some time with Yvonne. Not only is she a superb chef with an energetic personality, but she’s quite the philanthropist helping her community by teaching the elderly how to cook dishes to nourish their bodies with healthy choices. She also explained, if requested, how she prepares her dishes with each persons needs in mind.
She then took us on a tour of her recreation center two doors down. What a beautiful space for all occasions. I highly recommend making a trip, Toma-Tis will not disappoint. My daughter and her boyfriend traveled 1 1/2 hours and I traveled 40 minutes, and was it worth it😋😋😋.
Yvonne made such a positive experience and went above and beyond what I expected. We will definitely be back. I can’t wait to try all the dishes and desserts...
Read moreMy husband and I are from Pittsburgh, PA and were in the area for a concert last night. I always like to look ahead on Yelp and Google for local vegan joints to try when we're somewhere new and this one stuck out to me. I was just as excited to come here as I was for the concert!
First of all, the service was SO PERSONAL. Everyone there was so friendly, chatting with us about veganism, etc. The owner especially was so sweet and made us feel like we were really being taken care of.
We didn't want to go crazy with ordering since we were going to be going to a concert right after and tried to order light by sharing the jerk chicken sandwich, a pumpkin patty and a jackfruit/chickpea patty, cassava fries, and a slice of pie which I think they said was some type of potato "pudding"?
Everything was so delicious, substantial, and satisfying! The cassava fries were light and not greasy at all but still had so much unique flavor, I was swooning over them!
The jerk chicken was out of this world and I regret not getting a whole one for myself! The seasoning, the crisp of the "chicken," even the bread it was on was perfect.
Both patties were warm and savory, a perfect handheld snack. AND THAT PIE! Unlike anything I have ever eaten - it was just the right amount of sweet, loaded with spices and flavor, dense and chewy. One of those things that you eat and then can't stop thinking about. We had half of it saved and I'm not going to lie - I thought about it a few times during the concert and then immediately dug into it in the car afterward!
I don't want to come back here, I NEED to come back. The menu is so extensive and I want to try some of the entrees - hoe many places do you know that serve vegan oxtail?? I need to try it.
I am so happy that we found Toma-Tis and I will be recommending it all of my friends, vegan or not! (FWIW, my husband is not vegan and he devoured everything happily!)
If you live nearby, I am so jealous. I would be a...
Read moreAlright! We are SO doing this!!
I remember when Yvonne, the owner, was first opening up her restaurant. I decided to stop by her location (prior to her official grand opening) to introduce myself and to get to know her. I work a few doors down from her so i make it a point to meet all of the owners of the local businesses here in the area. The moment i met her, i INSTANTLY knew that this lady was a sweet heart. She welcomed me in with biggest smile ever! We had a long heart to heart talk when she was opening up and we got to know each other pretty well.
I am never going to forget the first time she asked me to try some of the things on her menu. I had the grilled chicken with rice, salad, and a little bit of mac and cheese and it was DELICIOUS!!! OMG! The chicken was grilled perfectly, had an awesome spicy kick to it, and was SUPER juicy!! The rice was awesome and the Mac and cheese... OMG.... the mac and cheese was OUT. OF. THIS. WORLD!! Needless to say, i have been coming here for the past 3 years and have never been disappointed with anything i've ordered in the past.
You can tell immediately that Yvonne puts her heart and soul into all of her cooking. When i eat her food, its as if i am eating my own moms cooking. Its weird, i know... i cant explain it.
She recently added some vegan options to her menu as well and they are all SUPER delicious. I cant say enough good things about this place! If you want some delicious home-made Jamaican cuisine, THIS IS THE...
