On Saturday, February 2, 2019 I had the pleasure of discovering a true treasure, hidden in the Hudson Valley. As a native to upstate NY, and having lived in New York City for years, I can sincerely say I've never had such a unique and enjoyable experience. Located in the heart of Highland, NY, walking into Knaus Gallery and Wine Bar takes you to another place in time; a quaint little wine bar has an old Parisian feel, which is still currently decorated with beautiful works of art by local New Paltz artist, Howard Miller.
Not only were there tons of paintings by the featured artist of the month, which is something that Knaus holds regularly, but the extraordinary hand-crafted pottery, and jewelry also added to the welcoming and colorful ambiance; I can honestly say each unique piece complimented the other because of how inviting this amazing little space is.
Not only was the artwork, and display incredible to experience, but the entire night the gallery was stocked with some of the best wine, and hors d'oeuvres I've had in the Hudson Valley. These were personally provided by owner, Sarah Knaus who not only put together the entire event, but calmly walked around greeting and entertaining guests as she helped her amazing staff.
The artist, Howard Miller (my father) and I would like to thank Sarah and her daughter, Nisa (chef, and co-owner) for putting this incredible night together! They opened up a perfect fusion of art, wine, and food that excites and inspires all the senses. Not only was there a great mix of different kinds of artists that attended Saturday night, but the crowd was full of art lovers, and people who appreciate the finest food and wine. The vibe was truly memorable!
When you live and breath art, one can only hope for more people who support local artists to the extent that Sarah does. Please visit if you're in the area, or make sure to return and see the...
Read moreA wonderful cozy neighborhood place to meet up with friends. Sarah Knaus has a nice selection of wine including Proseco. Beer is also available. If you need a bite, try her charcuterie plate, flatbreads, soups, and salads. She just added chicken salad, that’s my “go to”.
If you enjoy shopping, there is a nice selection of affordable copper, silver, bronze, ceramic, and beaded jewelry. Lisa Knaus, a very well known local potter and instructor, has the best designed mugs that retain heat for a long time. She even makes some of her bowls and vases out of black Montauk sand! This gallery is a great place to pick up a house warming gift, a bridal shower gift, or a last minute birthday gift.
Check out the monthly art show which typically features local painters. The Gallery is filled paintings and prints with a wide range of prices and eclectic styles. Well known local painter and instructor, George Knaus, has a permanent installation at this gallery. He has over-sized works that can fill a mansion or smaller works of warm and idyllic scenes that would complement smaller homes with less wall space.
Oh, just one more thing…sisters Nisa and Rosa Knaus have artfully written and illustrated a few “small” books of their own. They are on display as you enter the building.
So, just realized that the whole Knaus family has poured their heart into this little and cozy establishment. This is a place for one stop shopping, drinking, dining, and browsing. For me…it’s become “The Cheers of Highland”! When it gets nice out, I’m the one at the high top table with a drink...
Read moreI love this place. There is always something new to discover in the gallery and the food and wine is never short of amazing. Sarah knows her wine, so if you are open to suggestions, ask her for a recommendation. I love making a day of going over the Walkway Over the Hudson from Poughkeepsie to Highland, stopping at the Knaus Gallery and Wine Bar for a bit of sustenance, and then heading back. If you haven't been there yet, go. You will be welcomed and made to feel at home like you are...
