Thornwood Coach Diner — Restaurant in Town of Mount Pleasant

My experience was so bad that I have never returned. And it seems like many people had a similar experience with the extremely rude and arrogant manager/owner that I had.

I used to be somewhat of a regular here as I lived and grew up in Thornwood. The food was always okay to pretty decent. Nothing to write home about, but okay for a quick bite of okay-quality (albeit expensive for what it is) food.

However, I had one bad experience that has stuck with me. My girlfriend and I came here on a (very) slow night just for some coffee. The place was dead - there was nobody waiting for tables. Otherwise we would have felt bad and went somewhere else so people who actually wanted to eat wouldn't have to wait for us. Anyway, we're there for about an hour just talking and finally I go to pay. The total is like $4 or something and I didn't have any cash on me.

And it was one of the owners/managers at the cash register that night. I give him a credit card and he goes on a RAMPAGE. He starts going red, berating and yelling at me how I should never use a credit card for such a small amount and that I should go find an ATM so I could give them cash.

I thought he was joking at first, so I started laughing, but he just got angrier and redder. He goes on to yell at me. I finally told him this is all I have so take it or leave it. He finally accepts it angrily and mumbling under his breath.

I've never come across such an immature and unhinged grown adult before, especially one that runs a business. Just a very disgusting and child-like individual. Ever since then neither my girlfriend, my friends, my family, or myself have ever returned.

The subpar and overpriced food is not worth it in my opinion.

Also the place is extremely gross and dirty. Tables are so sticky and the water had nasty things floating in it. The food may be okay, but you have to question how sanitized the kitchen and thus the food is. Please, avoid this place...

If I could give them 0 stars I would. This was the worst take out experience I have ever experienced. I have been frequenting this diner my entire life here in Hawthorne with my family for almost 30 years. That stops tonight for my entire family. I have two small children, placed my order at 5pm. We were told 15-20 mins. We got there 30 mins since they are NOTORIOUSLY late on being ready. However tonight was a different case. They gave our order to the wrong person. And then offered to remake our food (not sure what we were supposed to eat if they didn't remake it.) As we were waiting there for it to be remade, the person who picked up our order came back and returned our order. I do not believe it is appropriate health code to give us food that left the establishment in someone else's hands (especially in this day off COVID, but I am pretty sure that is what they were hoping we would accept. Our order was ready and we saw them packing up a couple pieces of chocolate cake, and thought that was their compensation for THEIR error. So we did not say anything. We get home now over an hour after we ordered and there was nothing additional given. I called and asked why nothing was offered as compensation for delaying my young children eating and making a very large ERROR, and I was screamed at by the manager Deena (sp?) and supposed owner. I did not expect a full refund, I would have been happy with a free coffee or dessert on us for your kids now or during your next visit, but to receive NO compensation for a large error? It is so sad because especially now during these times these small business and restaurants need our support and a small little gesture was all that was needed. They have lost mine and the other 3 members of my family that live local patronage. I will be taking my patronage to...

It used to be 5 stars but they raised the prices recently. I know food has become expensive but.... The diner is now under new management, most of the old staff has left so there is new help. Have been going there for years but may need to find a new place. We will try it a few more times to see. Food isn't as good as it used go be. Edit: I was there again last night and asked the waiter if the chicken salad was fresh and I was told it was. Well it wasn't the freshest. This new owner needs go get his act together. This is the second time the food wasn't that great. This is the second strike. I gave it four stars last time I would take another star away if I could, and remember, three strikes and you're OUT.

I used to order a shrimp salad sandwich on rye and it was very good. Shrimp fresh, rye bread fresh, now it is just a mediocre sandwich with cold shrimp and rye bread. I took away three stars, The old chef was much better and should be rehired as well as the old wait staff. I won't be going back to this establishment. And I have been going here for years and years.
