I don’t normally write a review unless a place has made a major impact on me and I got to say that I am extremely displeased with the overall experience here..My husband and I ordered hibachi food from Tokyo Tavern for lunch which other than the final cost, raised no red flags at the time (we’ve ordered from here before). However, that pre-conceived notion was suddenly shifted when our food was delivered 30-40 minutes later..I was perplexed to find that the noodles they used for our hibachi meals are not like any other noodles used in a normal Japanese restaurant( they were MUCH, MUCH thinner). So, I called and spoke with the owner/manager and honestly was quite appalled by her response with lack of any decency or respect to come to a reasonable solution. When she was informed about our concern, she fired back with “that’s how they do it at their restaurant.” I explained that it was not brought to our attention at the time of the call about their hibachi style noodles contrasting with ALL other hibachi noodles used at other comparative establishments (AND how would we know that unless that information was relayed to us beforehand!?!) She just continued to argue with me, stating “that’s how they do it here and we should’ve told her we wanted bigger noodles.” Being in a field where customer service is critical, I was astounded at the thought that she would spitefully resume to be combative with me instead of easily rectifying the matter. (we only live right down the road and they could’ve delivered the other noodles to us but she refused to fix the situation at all!) Apparently, she failed to care about customer satisfaction which is an essential goal to any food industry’s survival AND its success! And although there are some of you reading this that may not think this is a big deal, IT IS when you pay over $40 for two meals and food that is provided to you looks like sauerkraut..it presented quite a quandary and it led to making a “simple” phone call. So, I dialed their number and when I addressed the matter at hand logically and rationally, I ended up with a tyrant..an insolent woman screaming at me on the other end, attempting to justify this “mishap” without regard for the customer’s contentment and after her little tirade, she blamed us for THEIR subconscious deception. The call then dissolved after one final shriek, “never to call their restaurant again!”, ..I will more than willingly oblige to grant her request and will spread the word on how they do “business”. Final warning for people who actually want their money’s worth and not receive food that looks like a condiment for a...
Read moreHad take-out on a Wednesday. Went to pick it up myself. Place was quaint and quiet, but it was only 4:30 in the late afternoon.
I sat at the sushi bar while I placed my order and had a nice conversation with the owner/sushi chef. I think the hostess who immediately greeted me when I entered was his wife. Both of them were very friendly and pleasant.
I ordered Hibachi Scallops, Spider Roll, Salmon Skin Roll, Eel Avacado Roll, and Tuna Hand Roll. The chef prepared all 4 rolls very professionally right in front of me. The Scallops were cooked in the kitchen.
Everything was Delicious (capital "D"). There were about a dozen scallops in the hibachi - enough for my wife to get a second meal, which she did. They were seared perfectly and were nice and tender and flavorful. Definitely a meal worth having again.
All of my rolls were excellent. I usually save one of the best pieces for my last bite, but I really couldn't decide in this case because they were all so good. The Tuna Hand Roll was fresh and bountiful. Since this is the easiest one to judge the freshness of the fish by, I can say it was excellent. All of the food was excellent.
The soft shell crab and salmon skin were just as I expected, texture & flavor combined. And the eel? As good as any I've ever had, and I've had eel in every sushi bar and restaurant I've been too. Eel is always one of my favorites. (Who would think a slimy snake looking fish could be so delicious?)
Tokyo Tavern in Pleasant Valley, NY is most definitely a HIDDEN GEM of the Hudson Valley. It can easily be overlooked because of it's inconspicuous location, but don't let the subdued appearance fool you. It is a quality, first class restaurant well worth a visit. I know I'll now be a...
Read moreTokyo Tavern is hands-down the best Sushi Restaraunt in Dutchess County...and maybe even the entire Hudson Valley.
I lived in Manhattan for 20 years, and I can say with confidence that Tokyo Tavern bests 95%+ of the sushi restaurants in NYC. So being the best in the Hudson Valley is actually a layup in that context!
I have been to Japan, and Tokyo Tavern holds its own even amongst the best sushi restaurants in Tokyo and Kyoto.
Be sure to try the Seafood Soup, with generous portions of Shrimp, Crabmeat, Scallops, a fantastic home made broth, and vegetable goodies to boot.
The fish is phenomenal, and the reason why is because Tokyo Tavern does not use the distributors that all of the other sushi joints in the HV use - the owner personally goes down to the Seaport in Manhattan for all of the fish served at Tokyo Tavern. Tokyo Tavern was actually open for over 15 years in Manhattan (Midtown East), so it's no wonder that it is far better than anything else in the HV. Competition makes things good, and you will notice the difference!
Be sure to ask the chef about any specials as they often have some hidden gems on offer.
I don't eat rolls because I prefer sushi and sashimi, so I can't personally vouch for those, but I've seen many a platter of sushi rolls come out of the kitchen and they look fantastic! I really should try a roll sometime, but the sushi and sashimi is so good that I just stick with what I love.
The decor is simple traditional Japanese style. But let's be honest - you're coming here for the fish!
Highly...
