Update: We finally decided to return after a few weeks. Debating on whether to sit at the bar again, we did, and we had the same bartender. She was very annoyed with us obviously (facial expressions/eye rolls) but, did serve us. The pizza was cooked nicer with a decent amount of toppings. We also had the mozzarella sticks which are always good. The main downside was when Tracy was over by the server pick up area talking with someone (dressed like a manager/ food expediter) loudly about us and how we lied about everything we said, citing examples. Of course we could then see her and servers talking and staring at us later also. People should realize if you are going to clearly talk about a customer it should not be in an open spot of the restaurant loud enough that we knew it was us and not while looking at them. Although things went better my wife and I are not sure we will be back since humiliating us in front of the bar talking about how we are liars. This should not happen when you write a review. I understand people being defensive but it has no place in front of customers. She could have talked to us directly like a professional and I would have explained our position to her.
I normally give good reviews as I am an executive chef and was trained at the CIA. My wife and I love Savona’s restaurant normally. The three date nights we have had recently have been horrible. We always try to go on Wednesday since it is 1/2 off wine. The past few times our bartender has been Tracy who I guess has been there a long time. She was very attentive to her regulars sometimes she would talk with the 20 minutes and ignore everyone else at the bar ie us. When we come it is normally others. When she brought us a bottle of wine. I poured a glass of it for both my wife and I. About 10 minutes in I take a sip and notice there is food stuck to the entire inside of my glass. I calmly ask for another glass and said it was dirty. She look and said oh my yea. She too the glass threw out the wine and gave me a clean empty glass no wine. Later the same thing happened to the couple two seats down from us and she did the same thing except give her a new glass with wine which was one of her regulars. So in other words she only cares when she knows you. Also on top of that the gentleman next to my wife who was screaming through the bar about floods and if you don’t leave you will die she kept serving vodka to even when he said he was not driving home and Tracy said how are you getting there and he said ok I am driving. Proceeded to give him two more double vodkas that she did not ring in and the gentleman even fell outside the door and went to his car. The pizza I love is the broccoli rabe pizza. This time there was broccoli rabe on three pieces little dots of it that was all. It was disappointing but not like what I witnessed at the bar. I thought that Savona’s held themselves to a higher caliber especially being in Red Hook.
Update: Savonas' was nice enough to contact me the next day via email. Jessica was very professional and assured me that they would look...
Read moreUpdated review 2/19/25 Coming back to Savona's after a 3 month hiatus due to some previous experiences that felt, well, just not up to par we were a little nervous. Our evening started with a nice bottle of Vermentino, and your amazing homemade mozzarella sticks which are my wife's favorite. The cheese will stretch across the table if you wanted it to. Jonnie was our server and seemed to be acting manager that night. She was working hard to please all her tables including paying attention to ours and making us feel welcome. At one point of the night I am pretty sure I saw her running the pass. She could not have been more pleasant to us even after she expressed reading our previous reviews and knowing who we are. She knows the restaurant business well and is a great asset to Savona's. As the evening progressed we moved on from the stretching cheese to the crab cake special appetizer. Well the best thing about it was the sun dried red pepper sauce! Wow, full of flavor, brightly colored and probably was the best thing of the night. The crab cake however was a let down. Very, very little crab flavor. It was completely brown on the inside full of filler and hardly any crab to be found but, the sauce made the plate. The one other thing that was a let down were their famous breadsticks, there was hardly any oil or pesto on them which is what makes them great. There was not even any oil in the bottom of the metal bowl to dip them in, they were pretty dry. Moving to dinner, my favorite pizza there is The Rabe. It is a wood fired grilled pizza with broccoli rabe, sausage, onions, tomato sauce and oh so yummy. This time it was cooked to perfection. The bottom was crisp with plenty of toppings. It filled the plate and the kiss of the fire creating those wonderfully little burnt bubbles of crispy dough and toppings was perfect. The pizza stood up on its own when you held it, and was just such a great treat to enjoy. My wife finished the meal off with her favorite tiramisu which she swears is one of the best you can get. It was finally a pleasure to come back and see an improvement back to what a casual fine dining experience should be at a well known place. We look forward to coming back for date...
Read moreI'm a big fan of savona's restaurant because their food is always delicious and the service is always a little bit above what you would expect. This week we decided to buy their $50 dinner special to go, which we brought home to use when we had company today. We took it out of the refrigerator, opened it up and were shocked to see the first of all instead of the cannolis they promised we had a mess of cheesecake and some kind of funny looking topping. We called them up and they were happy to replace it with the cannolis; Great. We heat it up the meal in the oven at 300° for an hour and we took it out we were surprised to see that it was totally dried out because they never put any sauce on it and also they never put a cheese on the chicken cutlet Parmesan so we had chicken cutlets and we had a little bit of sauce and a lot of sauce on the pasta beneath but nothing on the chicken. The meal was extremely disappointing and we were so sad because normally their food is so good. We'll go back there to eat at the restaurant but we will never ever buy their dinner special again because it was not prepared properly they didn't put in the time to make sure that when the food was reheated it would be edible. I'm quite disappointed in this restaurant because normally they do a great job but I guess whoever was making up these meals really wasn't paying attention. No cheese on the freaking Parmesan and almost no sauce at all. Painful to even...
