Sakura — Restaurant in Town of Union

This place is one of the best restaurants in Broome County, and I'm consistently surprised at how few people know about it. Unassuming from the outside in it's location in Endicott's Price Chopper plaza, everything about Sakura is a bit understated, but the food is stellar. Their menu features an impressive variety, considering the size of the restaurant, and no matter what you order, the fish always tastes fresh. The preparation and plating makes you feel like you should be paying big bucks, but their prices are fair and portions are generous. The restaurant's decor is in someways typical of a sushi restaurant, but Sakura also features contemporary art pieces that give the decor a more personal feeling. The chef is always busy, but takes a moment to welcome guests when he isn't intensely focused on his work. The woman who runs the house welcomes guests as if they were all regulars. I was in the area looking for sushi and was recommended to try Sakura’s. From the moment you walk in, you feel like you’ve been transported to Japan—the ambience and atmosphere set the stage for a great dining experience. The service was excellent, attentive without being intrusive. The sushi itself was beautifully prepared by the chef, with each piece tasting fresh and delicate. Every bite felt carefully crafted. I sat at the sushi bar and ordered multiple pieces of nigiri. The sushi rice was interesting in that it was a bit salty and has a nice sweet/vinegar taste to it. I like it a lot. The fish tasted decent quality. Something I could eat everyday casually and enjoy. I sat at the sushi bar and talked to the sushi chef and his wife, who run the place, and had some very nice conversation. The sushi chef gave me a couple pieces of extra squid and some fried squid for free as well as we were talking.
