A friend who had never eaten there before, invited me to dine at Gaby's when I visited her Saturday night. The place was packed but we were able to get a table. The noise level was extremely loud, with all of the diners yelling over one another. Although they are a Mexican restaurant, their menu offers steak, seafood and other non-Mexican options, I have a food allergy, to onions, and after discussing the choices with the waiter, I selected scallops, and asked that they be prepared on a surface and with implements untouched by any kind of onion. I selected spinach as a side, after being assured there were no onions in it. After discussion with the waiter, I specified that the salad offered with the entree be prepared with non onion equipment, and have no onions inside. The waiter spoke English well, and participated in the discussion of food options given my allergy. A wait staff person brought the salad first. It was fine but when they brought the entree, it had potatoes on the plate instead of the spinach I looked for the waiter to ask that my spinach be brought to the table, but he had disappeared. While looking for the waiter, and waiting, I put a small piece of potato in my mouth. It had ONION on it! I asked a busser who apparently didn't speak much English to find my waiter, and he continued to set a nearby table instead of going to find the waiter. I tasted the scallops and they were ok, but after waiting uselessly for the busser to get me a waiter, or bring the hostess to me, or for the waiter to come back to our table, I finally had to walk up to the hostess and tell her my food was wrong and I needed the waiter. He finally showed up at the table, and when I reminded him that we'd agreed on no onions, he said he was sorry, that I had been given the wrong plate. I told him the mistake had been dangerous to me. The waiter offered to take my plate and replace it with another meal, and I agreed because I was hungry. I took some emergency allergy medication to try to prevent a reaction, and waited for my meal for another 10 or 15 minutes, as my friend finished her meal. The waiter brought my new plate, which was onion free and had the spinach and the scallops. At the end of the meal we were presented with a bill of $70 ish dollars for 2, which included one mixed drink for each of us. We saw the restaurant had made NO adjustment nor offered any complimentary dessert after their dangerous error, and the disrupted dining experience. I asked the hostess to see the manager, and the guy who was my waiter turned out to be the manager! I told him I thought there should be some consideration for having made that mistake and ruining our dining experience, and he refused, saying, "You didn't get sick," with no regard for the after effects I fully expected to have as a result of having tasted the potato. His attitude was entirely cavalier and not at all apologetic or taking responsibility for his dangerous mistake. He was dismissive about the danger to which he subjected me, which was highly offensive, and neither my friend nor myself will ever eat...
Read morePlanned to stop here for lunch and our hike ran late so we arrived around 2:45. We we're seated right away but waited 10-15 minutes before anyone would come to our table. The busser was walking around talking on her cell phone and the hostess wasn't paying attention to us either. Finally a server spotted us and within minutes we had water and chips and a drink order put in. We were given the menu which has much higher prices than I remember seeing on the website. I realized after the fact that they had given us the dinner menu at 2:45 and the prices were way higher than I planned on spending for lunch.
Our drinks and food were just fine but the service only got worse. We finished eating and we were in a bit of a rush to get somewhere else so I had to keep flagging down anyone I could find to get a take out box and then to get our check brought to the table. It turns out our server had taken her lunch break and was sitting at the bar and she didn't have anyone cover her tables. I decide to go to the bathroom while we waited and she was in there brushing her teeth! I really don't complain about service at restaurants most of the time but this was something else...we ended up just paying in cash because we just couldn't wait to get out of there. No thank you on the way out or anything. On top of that, they do a cash discount if you pay in cash but we decided it wasn't worth wasting another 30 minutes waiting for someone to come back to our table so we even ended up overpaying for all this. Food was just fine and service was pretty bad so I probably...
Read moreWe came here for valentines day and the food was ok. I got fajitas, and they gave me flour tortillas. I've lived all over the southwest and west, and this is the first time in 10 years I've gotten flour tortillas at a mexican restraunt. I don't know if this is a New York thing, but typically you're asked about the tortillas types, or corn come out automatically. We ordered the shrimp cocktail which had 5 shrimp in it for $13. The cocktail sauce was good, would have been better if it wasn't 5% shrimp and 95% cocktail. The fajitas were ok, but not much more than just that. There wasn't much flavor, spice, or effort put towards the meal.
I didn't eat much because I wasn't particularly hungry, and I thought that the leftovers would be tastier the next day if I was hungrier. Upon leaving, I asked for the to go box and they didn't pack 2/3rds of the meal. But, they packed the leftover butter from my spouses plate. I don't know how I'm supposed to finish fajitas with 1/3rd of the ingredients and butter....
I don't think that I'll be coming back here, especially for the price point of the food. It was okay mexican food, but it wasn't particularly great mexican food, but at $10 - 20 an appetizer and $20 - 40 a plate, the food quality and service definitely wasn't on par to the prices that they're charging.
This place seems to do a lot for the local communities. Based upon the signage around the rest rooms, it seems that there is a lot of support for the local and Hispanic community. That was refreshing and...
