Hello Fellow Google Map Explorer(s) ;
This is Another....(Yeah lol, you guessed it!), Childhood Memory Maker Destination for Me Growing Up Except Back Then I Remember It As "The Old Mill" & I remember they almost always had the restaraunt staple,The Big Wooden-Wheel, spining around with the slight sound of the water clashing with it's paddles which in turn "Made The Magic Happen".
It was always a must hit on the way outta town type of tradition, which became a fond memory and eventually to what it feels like today, 2022, roughly 25 years from my first visit,.which is personal & hard to explain without a life story so we'll skip that hyperbole & just say I gave "The Old Mill" which is what I will forever know this establishment's name to be, a 4 out of 5.
Now even though I can remember happy times here , or that the name was changed to "The Mill" in Old Forge, NY, it just didnt give me the same appeal as it once did whether 24.5yrs ago or last summer when we passed it as coming into town. And even if their are new owners, the old name for "The Old Mill" suited it well for quite some time. Just saying : )
As far as the food, it was delicious as far as mine was concerned & I didn't hear any complaints from our 4 guest table besides the bartender may of been new necause i know what a "Captain Morgan Rum & Coke" tastes like, watered down or heavy handed and this was neither of the sort so I left the mishap untold because it really wasnt that dramatic you know? lol.. I mean the hospitality industry is a hard, labor riddled jposition, per your title in most cases, I've been there busting my hump after 2 am on a New Years Day after ringing in the New Years Eve holiday washing dishes, taking out bags upon bags of trash for minimal pay compared to some other positions which lets just say rely on the underpaid half of the operation in order to make some of the insanely overpaid amounts in comparison to ours, but hey thats the way it is & not the industry/position to carry on long term unless your a passionate & talented head chef making the expensive , smartly garnished entrees that demand $30++ per plate, or in someway an owner as in a franchise or small restaraunt owner with a seasonal niche.
We sat on the front deck as we drove over 50 miles just for this meal you see so naturally we were the 2nd party in line for opening time of 4pm. I had the Shepards Pie which I know sounds blandish or blah to some of you but even though its quite the ordinary made meal, I've never had it before so I did. My relative was surprised to see me finish everything on my plate for once lol. The waitress was nice..
I would suggest some type of music at opening, at least in the bar area..Really grab what you can for the last of the 2022 Summer Crowd..And maybe just an additional quick make vegetable option for the elderly or over picky patrons im sure you'll receive..My mom is basically the latter of the two described above & she couldnt have either choice because of digestive issues so she was a little bummed.. But Great Job despite what The Covid Epidemic did to most major industries, especially the Food/Hospitality industry.
P.S....I just wanted to mention the neat, multi - colored , adult sized "Connect Four" style game put outside in the front tree line. I noticed the bartender either bringing it out or setting it up as he became free after your 4pm opening I wanted to say its a great idea, great game pick but not the best situated place on the restraraunt's property for a safe, fun family &/or bar goer aimed recreation. My son loved it and he's 2.5yrs old but with it being so close to the main road into town, in/out, I was unable to put him down to play properly...Or at least try to with a wild 2yr. old lol! Just sayin..
But thanks for a good meal and...
Read moreThis past weekend, like we have for more than 20 years, four of us traveled to Old Forge to enjoy the area, the people and the food. Three out of three nights we ate at the Mill Restaurant (formerly the Old Mill Restaurant). The first night we had drinks on the deck while we waited for our seating to open up. We were called for our table in a reasonable amount of time. The server was OK, and the food was good, but not special. The second night, we waited for our table while having drinks in the bar area. The hostess would from time to time come into the bar looking for who was apparently next up for seating. She didn’t come to the far side of the room where we were sitting, and only if you were sitting near her, or there was a short break in the room noise could she be heard announcing who was up next. After a longer than expected wait, I had to go find her to be sure we weren’t passed up for seating because we couldn’t hear her. The hostess was put off because I came to question her about seating. Again, the food was good, but not special, and this time the server was somewhat better. Sunday night, because we were tired, we wanted drinks, and we were staying within walking distance, we went back to the Mill. Once again we waited in the bar/lounge area waiting for our table. Our 25-30 minute wait turned into almost an hour, and during that time we didn’t see the hostess come in the bar at all announcing who had a table ready for them. When she finely came in, she randomly walked around the room, near the bar asking who was waiting for seating never once referring to names on her “list” and never coming near us. We watched as three different groups that came in the door after we did, being taken for seating. They were couples, but, they were seated at booths that are made for four people, so there was no reason for them to have gone first, other than the fact that the hostess was incompetent and frazzled. I again went to the hostess and expressed my displeasure, civilly, but sternly, she was mad that I would question her and point out that others had been seated before us, snapping, you’re next, I’m setting you up now. It was same with the food and server, OK, but nothing special. Over the years when it was The Old Mill, we have eaten in the neighborhood of 50 meals there, that’s around 200 entrees and drinks, the service was better, the food was better, and they were busier. This weekend was without question the worst. Our 12 entrees, drinks, and service were less enjoyable than going through a drive through at a fast food joint. The management needs to address the hostess issue, and if she is management, well, she should consider a change of careers. We will be back in Old Forge next year, but not likely...
Read moreI was not at all impressed with this establishment. We got there about 6:30 on a Sunday evening and walked up to the hostess station, which was empty because she had wandered off. The bartender waved us over to him and instructed us to go to the dining room to be seated immediately, only for us to stand around a few minutes before one of the wait staff told us to go back out to the hostess station. The hostess reappeared and took our name and told us we would have a 30-40 minute wait. THERE WAS NOWHERE TO SIT while we waited. We were exhasted from a day of walking all over town and the kids were rambunctious, and probably annoying the patrons who were eating, as we had no place to wait. As we were pushing the 45 minute mark, and I started to call other local restaurants to check on their wait time, we were finally seated. The hostess gave us all adult menus, even though we had 2 young children in our party. Our waitress briefly ran down the kids menu for us, but only after we complained about not having kid menus, and we finally placed our orders. My youngest daughter ordered the kids mac and cheese - and it was a TINY bowl of KRAFT BOX MAC AND CHEESE, which did not fill her at all - which is terrible as she is a tiny kid that doesn't eat much. She had to eat one of my youngest son's chicken tenders to feel full, as there were no sides AT ALL with her dinner. The food was WAY overpriced, and I do mean WAY overpriced. I ordered the stuffed pork chop - for $24 and I kid you not, my dinner came with FROZEN MIXED VEGETABLES that were MUSHY, a scoop of mashed potatoes and the pork chop itself only tasted like salt. I think it was supposed to be stuffed with some sort of cranberry and pear chutney, but it was all horrible. My husband liked his dinner - he got the pot roast, but he LOVES salty food. My oldest daughter got the flat iron steak, and liked the steak, but they also both got a side of frozen vegetables. Our waitress was nice, but blamed the slow service on the fact that a waitress fell and dislocated her shoulder on the premises. I honestly cannot believe the people of Old Forge allow themselves to be bamboozled by this establishment! There are other, far better restaurants to eat at, like Billy's and Slickers. We will...
