Update* I don't know what changed but something definitely did. We went from never wanting to go back to deciding to give it a try again to see if there might be hope for what was once our favorite pizza - so glad we did. We tried it once, waited a while, then again, waited a while again, repeat... The consistency was back! We had one dine-in experience that shocked us all. The service, which they had never been known for, was outstanding. The pizza was the best I'd ever had along with the wings, salad, and the amazing bread. So happy that they have figured out whatever was wrong before and corrected it. This is, once again, the best pizza in metro Detroit. And now, the service is better as well. Well done!
Update** Here we go again. The consistency is apparently gone for good. Ordered again on 7/27/19. We got two large pizzas and that was it. They always open the box to show you that the pizza is correct. The toppings were correct. However, there was almost no sauce on the pizza. I pointed it out to the person who was showing me the pizza. He agreed and apologized for the lack of sauce and offered to have them remake the pizzas. I couldn't wait and I was too disappointed that things really haven't changed for the better for me to deal with them any further. Goodbye to what used to be a stalwart in metro Detroit pizza. Go to Art & Jakes or Green Lantern for more consistent pizza and (always) better service. Update* 2 return trips since the negative experiences. Both times, the pizza was back to their usual high quality. Hope it continues. Back to 4 stars. When it is right, it is the best. Getting 3 stars based on their overall history. Based on recent history, it could easily be a 2 star review (or worse). They are starting to worry me. We have been going here for better than 25 years and I have always said that they have the best pizza in metro Detroit. The service has also always been amongst the worst in metro Detroit. The pizza has been so good that I could deal with it for take out. Though, it wouldn't kill anyone there to smile... once. For our last 2 trips there, the pizza has been disappointing. One, the dough was flat and lifeless. We just figured it was an aberration. We went back again recently and the dough was flat again and there was almost no sauce on the pizza. It would be sad to see this Detroit institution continue to decline. Thankfully, there are other options for high quality pizza in the area - Green Lantern and Art and Jakes. We will try Alibi again but if it doesn't live up to what it has always been, we will be done with them. I never felt great about rewarding lousy...
Read moreThis is the first time we have experienced a less than wonderful experience at The Alibi. Usually the food is excellent and the service top rate. My wife introduced me to the restaurant 31 years ago and we have been coming here regularly ever since. She first visited back when they were in the old building, so she's been a customer for over 45 years. We have had a lot of great meals here, but our last two visits have been less than stellar.
To start out, the service was as good as ever. Attentive, friendly and helpful. That's not the issue. On our most recent visit the restaurant was extremely loud and a party near us was literally shouting. They were already seated when we arrived, and they weren't the only loud, large party in the restaurant. We considered leaving before ordering, it was so loud, but opted to stay. The Alibi has never been particularly quiet, but this was unusually bad. Management never made an appearance, and the group was still there laughing and yelling when we finished and left.
That we could excuse as a one time aberration, but the pizza was the real problem. Until a month or two back, Alibi pizza was the gold standard in the area. Always excellent, sometimes sublime. On their worst days the pizza was better than most. We still were getting fabulous pizzas as recently as July. Something has changed.
The pizza looked the same as ever, but it just didn't taste the same. The flavors didn't meld the way they usually do, and we were left indifferent. I don't know whether it's a change in ingredient supplier, in the recipes, or in the cooks, but our last two pizzas were mediocre. We could get the same at Little Caesar's, and that's a huge loss.
We have agreed that we will be taking a break from The Alibi for a while. Maybe we hit them on a couple of bad days. Maybe they will realize that something is wrong, and fix it. But for now we will be trying out other pizza places in the area, looking for a new favorite. It's a sad day for the area when The Alibi seems to be...
Read moreFirst time at Alibi's. Did NOT have a good experience. Me, my siblings spent the day at the cemetery visiting our family members that had gone before us and cleaning all of their grave markers. We were hungry afterwards and chose to go eat at Alibi's. Food was great, waitress was good, but there was a manager or possibly a hostess there that was horribly rude. Her name was Felicia. We had a party of 10. Waited 20 minutes to be seated even though there were several empty tables at the time, but that was no big deal. We sat at the bar and waited patiently. As we were getting seated, this woman walked by and said, (very rudely) don't take the table at the end, I want my waitress to have another table to wait on if we need to fill it. Ok... no big deal, except for the way she said it. Mind you, we are all over 50 years old and didn't appreciate her tone. We ate and were enjoying visiting with each other when this woman came back by, didn't make eye contact with any us, didn't stop to communicate her issue with one of us, just spoke as she was passing by for all other patrons sitting near to hear and said, "We have a line up at the front door and you are going to have to leave". We were all stunned!! Never been kicked out of a restaurant before! We packed up and went to the front where my sister approached this woman and told her that it was very rude how she addressed the situation. This woman started arguing with her and told my sister, with our group sitting there taking up tables her waitress was not making any money. My sister asked her name and she told her it was Felicia. My sister was fuming and as we walked out said, bye Felicia and Felicia called her a KAREN and then waved her hand at all of us and told us that we could all go now. Because of Felicia and how horribly rude she was, we will NEVER return to that restaurant again!! It was a since the food was great and this one staff member ruined our...
