When the server took my order I explained I wanted the 'Hibachi chicken and shrimp'. She tried to correct me and say the benihana delight& I said no I don't want that I just want the hibachi chicken and shrimp. I've ordered my meal for close to 10 years. When everyone was receiving food the chef gave me these huge pieces of shrimp. I tried to eat a piece & it was hard to chew! When the server came by 20 mins later I mentioned it to her &she debated me saying the only way to order shrimp w/hibachi chicken is by ordering the benihana delight w/colossal shrimp. I told her that's not true &she said she would get a manager. Leon stood behind me instead of standing in front of the table which made me feel uncomfortable initially. We started the conversation with him telling me I ordered my food wrong and the server did everything right. I told him that is not how you initiate a conversation w/ a customer &I asked for hibachi chicken &shrimp not benihana delight. He continued debating that if I wanted hibachi shrimp I needed to ask for "hibachi chicken add on hibachi shrimp" which I never had to do. He said “let me tell you how to order correctly in this restaurant" which i interrupted him to tell him talking to me in a condescending manner is horrible customer service&extremely rude.I told him to teach his servers to inquire more on the needs of the customer then if there's confusion.I did not even have a receipt during this conversation I was just letting them know I was not a fan of the extra large shrimp nor did I order it. Leon asked to speak privately in the corner which I declined. The other guests at the table (which were strangers to me) even corrected him on his behavior towards me and said I didn't order the delight &I asked for hibachi shrimp. I refused to speak with him privately where I'm sure he would be even more disrespectful considering how rude he was in front of a group. He insisted at least three times to speak alone &I declined. He left &came back with a receipt that said 'hibachi chicken' then the second line said 'add on shrimp (10 pieces)'. I saw this& told the server I'm not paying for 10 pieces &I didn't eat them nor did I receive 10 pieces of colossal shrimp. I had 4 at most and everyone at the table couldn't believe what he just pulled with charging me. It came out to be more than what the Benihana Delight would have been (I looked it up on the menu). The server got Leon to come back as I requested a different manager but was told he was the only manager on duty. When Leon returned he told me charging me for the 10 pieces was how he was required to charge me for the shrimp even though I didn't want those shrimp nor did I eat but one bite. I then asked him if I took the shrimp out would he take the shrimp off my bill. He told me the only way he'd remove the shrimp from my bill is if I took them out of my carry out box (98% of my food was in the box as we had been there for 3 hours because of long wait times and I needed to get home). Leon walked away to remove the shrimp from my bill and I picked out the pieces of shrimp from my carry out box. There weren't a lot since I clearly didn't have 10 pieces of shrimp like he fraudulently tried to charge me for. I tossed them on the grill very agitated as all of this was ridiculous. Leon returned with a plate for me shrimp to go on and told me "you were supposed to give me the shrimp on this plate and not throw them on the grill. It looks bad for my next guests if there's food on the grill" I told him food on the grill is the least of his worries tonight. He never once mentioned to me that the shrimp I took out of my box was to be given to him. Regardless the table was dirty and full of everyone trying to put full meals in carry out boxes. The health department should be called immediately if he allows the chefs to cook on those grills after people dine in front of the grill after the chef is done. The grill should be cleaned when the table is cleaned. I paid and left. Leon was the most disgusting, disrespectful, condescending manager I've...
Read moreLet me start out by saying my boyfriend & I have been to this Benihana location numerous times in the past (2019-2022) and have always had a great experience! From the service to the cocktails to the food! Our last time at Benihana of Troy was in 2022 before I got pregnant with our son. It’s now September of 2024 & both of our birthdays just past this week so our family asked if we wanted to all get together & grab dinner for our birthdays! Hibachi sounded good! We hadn’t been to Benihana in over a year & our family had never been to any Benihana location before so we thought it would be a great place for dinner! We ended up making a reservation here for 5pm & arrived a little past 5pm which wasn’t a big deal because the place was absolutely dead on a Friday night.. (a bit weird) we thought but then again 5pm is a little early for dinner for most. Grabbed a booth in the back because we have a 1yrld with us & it was more comfortable being seated at a booth instead of at the grill. Service was awful… absolutely awful. Our server was very snappy & short with us. Tried to order the seasonal pumpkin spice espresso martini & the bar tender told us “they were out” lol even though it was advertised everywhere & it was a Friday night… okay.. no big deal. Order a couple of beers & a cocktail instead. Server brings us a couple glasses for the beers & the cups were dirty. Like, disgusting… I’m talking finger prints, lip prints, one of the glasses had literal food & sauce stuck to the side of it… the server didn’t see it when she first handed the glasses to us and apologized & went to get us new ones. We got the new glasses & those were a lot better but even then, one of the cups were still dirty so we decided to drink the beer right out of the can instead at this point. My cocktail was also poorly made & WAY too sweet to the point I could barely get it down. During us ordering food the servers phone began to ring & flash very loudly & she step to the side & answered her phone while in the mitts of taking our order! I looked over at my boyfriend with wide eyes & said “this can’t be real” we joked & let it go & finally got our order in. We ordered a bunch of sushi and hibachi. The food was pretty good! I must say, compared to the service atleast. The sushi presentation was beautiful but when we were served our hibachi it kinda looked like it was just all thrown together & not as nice as I once remembered. I was a little disappointed about that. Towards the end of our evening, my 1yrld kept pointing up at the light that was above us in our booth (he was fascinated by the light & learning new words) so we all looked up towards the light that was above us in our booth & come to our surprise, there was literal food & sauce splattered all over the ceiling above us, like it hadn’t been cleaned in months, maybe even longer. I was in complete & utter disgust… this wasn’t the same restaurant I remember coming to so many times in past years? I couldn’t believe how bad of an experience this was. We found ourselves talking about it days later because of how awful it was. At no point in the night did the restaurant ever become full or busy so I’m very confused & very sad about just how poor this whole experience really was. Im so disappointed & honestly felt a little embarrassed because this was our families first time ever eating/dining in at Benihana in their life! We hyped the place up just to have this experience, lol. BEYOND EMBARRASSING! I’m also disappointed & highly confused because from the looks of it, they spent all that money to upgrade the outside of the building just for the experience to be so awful. In my own personal opinion, I think they should have put more thought & money into upgrading the inside of the place & into the employees/who they choose to hire! The inside is so outdated & the booth area is so dark & gloomy. I know the booth area is a much darker setting, meant to be more intimate? But it just gives basement vibes. Will not be returning to this location anytime soon...
Read moreI can't believe I just paid $30 for about 1.5 cups of rice & some sauce on the side and atrocious customer service. Where to begin... For many years this was a go-to for our family get together dinners (bdays, send offs, milestone celebrations). We had it so often until about 5 years ago that it was embarrassing to see the monthly charges on the Visa bill. But as the family has grown beyond the table sizes available & we have some pickier eaters now we had to find different options. Even when we weren't taking the whole family, sometimes we would just do a carryout of hibachi rice and onion soup when the craving hit. Two of us could each do a double order of rice and soup for less than $25 including tip. Fast forward to yesterday when that craving hit after being sick in bed for a week and some rice & soup was calling my name. Ordered online & was blown away by the pricing: hinachi chicken rice for 2 with extra chicken to make it a meal was almost $17. Added on a large mustard sauce (choice of 1 oz for almost a dollar or a pint for 7). In good faith I added a generous tip. Now at $29 & change... for rice and mustard sauce for 2, but in my head it sounded delicious & I really needed a good meal to help get back on my feet. Website said it would be ready in 21 minutes. I'm 5 minutes away and headed there willing to wait to ensure hot off the hibachi. Hostess didnt even acknowledge me as I entered and asked if I still pick up in the bar. That phone in her hand was way more interesting, I get it. It was so dead inside that it was kinda eerie. Into the bar where I expected to have a seat to wait but as I slid onto a stool noticing a giant tub of garlic butter/"sauce" sitting uncovered with utensils laying in it where they were obviously preparing minute scoops into carry out souffle cups right on the bar, not refrigerated or even covered. The lady asked my name & to my surprise the order was ready sitting on the bar. No greeting, no further questions, just handed me a bag. The bag was so light that when I started away with it I realized I better check the order. The $7 sauce was missing, replaced with a souffle cup (.80 according to the online menu) & an embarrassingly small container of rice which I assumed was half of the "for two" rice we'd ordered. As I turned back to the lady at the bar and informed her of the missing sauce she said she thought I had only ordered an oz (for $7??). I questioned the rice, asking if I had received the double order with extra chicken. She quickly looked in the bag & confirmed "yep that's the right size". I almost laughed as I said "wow your portions have really shrunk!" to which she rolled her eyes and pivoted back behind the curtain. Clearly I had been dismissed. There was NO chicken in the rice as you would expect as it's typically mixed in during the cooking process. Only about 3-4 ounces of chopped chicken pieces sprinkled deceptively on top of the rice (remember the $2 upcharge for extra chicken). Barely warm btw. The mustard sauce did taste great but I couldn't even use it because the rice was so salty already. So one of us ate benihana for dinner while they other warmed up some leftover tamales from the fridge. I bet you can guess who enjoyed their dinner more. This once-loved staple on the busy Big Beaver row of amazing places to eat should give up their seat at the table and allow the space to go to an establishment that will strive to keep up with the quality & creativity of the area. Oh and the cherry on top was the two cars in the parking lot as I left, parked side by side passing their blunt back and forth as a bungee cord held the front bumper on one, while the other one was clearly put back together with parts from 3 different cars. At least I got a laugh... that might have been a contact buzz kicking in...
