Yesterday was my friend’s birthday and as NY natives and Jamaican women, we wanted amazing Jamaican food that tasted like back home and a wonderful night. Oh, It was everything, but that. We arrived at 7:01 PM to an over crowded entrance for our 7:00 reservation and were not seated until 30 minutes later. People that arrived after us, got seated before us. Unfortunately, the service only got worse from there. After being seated, we waited almost 15 minutes without anyone acknowledging our table. The only person who noticed was the hostess, who stepped in and asked if anyone had helped us. She then took our drink orders and was the only staff member who seemed aware, present, and attentive throughout the night. She was excellent and clearly trying to make up for the lack of service from the rest of the team.
We placed our initial drink order at 7:43 PM. Water and bread were brought out around 7:50 PM with no greeting or introduction. At 7:57 PM, we placed our food order with a different staff member, but still no one introduced themselves as our dedicated server. Throughout the night, multiple people came to the table, but no one took accountability for our experience.
Drinks finally arrived at 8:21 PM. Our appetizers didn’t come out until 8:52 PM, nearly 2 hours after we arrived. At that point, we had already informed the manager that we had been waiting for 1.5 hours and still hadn’t received any food. That was the only time we addressed anyone about the issues. We remained patient up until that moment.
We placed a second round of drink orders when the appetizers came, and at 9:11 PM we were told the entrees would be out soon. They didn’t arrive until 9:29 PM. The food was flavorful but arrived lukewarm. Even the cast iron skillet holding the curry goat was just warm to the touch, not hot. It was obvious the food had been sitting for a while, likely under a heat lamp. Meanwhile, our server was seen FaceTiming with patrons who were dancing. It was clear our table was not a priority.
To make matters worse, our receipt correctly listed us as a party of 3, but the server still manually added a $40 gratuity. She also failed to remove the jerk mac and cheese, which we never ate because it was barely edible, and she charged us for an extra drink that was never ordered. Given how little time she spent at our table, it’s not surprising that she was unaware of what we had actually received.
After paying the bill, I asked to see the menu again because I remembered the gratuity policy. Right at the top of the menu it clearly states that automatic gratuity applies to parties of 4 or more. We were only a party of 3, and the receipt also reflected that. Before checking the menu again, I asked the other hostess to confirm the policy, and she immediately said it only applies to parties of 4+. I then asked for the manager. He reviewed the receipt and corrected the issue. We were refunded the $40 that was never earned and should never have been added in the first place.
Leaving a restaurant at nearly 11:00 PM after arriving for a 7:00 PM birthday reservation is completely unacceptable… especially when we didn’t receive our food until more than 2 hours later.
This experience was full of disorganization, neglect, and shady billing practices. The sad part is that the food was really good, just room temperature/cold to due negligence via our server (we still don’t even know her name). The only positive was the hostess, who was attentive and proactive. Sadly, the rest of the team didn’t meet that same standard. We will not...
Read moreThis was supposed to be my birthday dinner, but it ended up being one of the most disappointing restaurant experiences I’ve ever had and definitely our first and last visit.
We arrived at 7:01 PM for our 7:00 reservation and wasn’t seated until 30 minutes later. From there, the service continued to disappoint. We placed our drink order at 7:43, and water and bread didn’t arrive until 7:50 both were dropped on the table without so much as a greeting or introduction.
At 7:57, we placed our food order (2 appetizers, 3 entrees) with yet another staff member no one ever introduced themselves as our actual server. The nameless waitress was very passive aggressive when I asked the size difference of the fish “one is longer and meatier and the other one is medium”
Drinks finally arrived at 8:21. Appetizers didn’t come until 8:52, and we placed a second round of drink orders yet our waitress never introduced herself, yet she was cheerful and chatty with other tables, even taking videos of guests dancing, while we sat waiting for food and drinks. At 9:11, we were told the entrees would be out “soon.” They didn’t arrive until 9:29 and it wasn’t was hot at all it was lukewarm because it had been sitting.
By 9:53, we inquired about the second round of drinks, and our server looked confused and got an attitude, she proceeded to come out with one drink and 5 minutes later the other. We finally received our check at 10:30 PM (thats when we learned her name because it was on the check), and noticed gratuity had already been added and extra items we didn’t order.
The most concerning part! We were a party of three, but some how a mandatory gratuity appeared on our check that is only required for a party 4 or more. It appears the server added the gratuity because she knows her service sucked.. Make sure to double-check your bill and party size if you go.
Unorganized service, long waits, no reassurance and deceptive billing practices (fraud). We won’t...
Read moreI recently visited EscovitcheZ Restaurant in Tucker, and it did not disappoint! As a fan of their Snellville location, I was excited to try this one out, and I'm so glad I did. The customer service was top-notch - the owners took the time to speak with every guest, and the staff was incredibly sweet. The atmosphere inside the restaurant was beautiful, and I loved the decor.
The food was absolutely delicious! I started with the Blow Wow Shrimp appetizer, which was amazing. The Soursop Juice was refreshing, and the Escovitch Red Snapper with Bammy and jasmine rice was cooked to perfection. And let's not forget the Jam Rock Bread Pudding for dessert - it was the perfect ending to a wonderful meal.
I was impressed that there was no wait to be seated, even at dinner time. Overall, I'd highly recommend EscovitcheZ Restaurant in Tucker to anyone looking for great Caribbean cuisine and exceptional service. Five stars isn't enough - I'd give it even...
