We ordered delivery today through Postmates. We ordered the Kung Pao Beef, Pork and Green Beans, Shrimp and Chinese Sausage Refried Rice, and Pork Dumplings with Chili Oil.
Despite it all being described as "served spicy" on the app, every spicy dish was bland, including the dumplings with chili oil. I would describe the dishes as as "spicy" as the mashed potatoes I made yesterday. I ordered the Kung Pao Beef because I like the unique numbing sensation of szechuan peppers and the crunchy peanuts. When I dined here years ago I remember fishing out the peppers because they were too much. However, I tasted no spice or numbing sensation in the dish (my partner said they felt it a bit), and there were too few peanuts. I would expect that when I make an addition of chili oil for the dumplings, it would be spicy. It was a bit, but not enough.
I understand the stereotype of white people not liking spice, but when one specifically orders the dishes described as spicy I would hope they would have any detectable spice at all.
Also, why does Jun Dynasty use plastic to-go containers? The Chinese-takeout-box-thing is fun, iconic, and biodegradable. Why did they switch to something that is worse in every way?
Other than being bland, the food was cooked well, not under or over-cooked, and not greasy. If you can't be bothered to spend 30 minutes cooking a boring-but-serviceable bunch of veg and meat in a saute pan at home, I guess it's fine.
I've dined at Jun Dynasty before, and I really enjoyed it. I'm not sure what changed in the last few years.
EDIT: If I'm to understand their response:
First, they're saying that they don't include the most interesting part (the me, at least) of Szechuan-inspired cuisine in their Szechuan-inspired dishes (Szechuan peppers or peppercorns). According to a simple Google search, which I did before ordering, "Kung Pao" style usually include Szechuan peppers, which is why I ordered it.
Secondly, if you try to order a dish spicy, it's not enough to just order a dish that is described as "served spicy," you have to put in special instructions.
Thirdly, if you DO add chili oil to a dish, it still isn't spicy, and you have to add an additional request to make it actually the thing you just asked for.
And you've always used plastic containers? Why would anyone choose to use plastic containers when there are containers that are sustainable, biodegradable, fun and iconic for Chinese-American restaurants? They spill less? Who cares? I order out food for something fun. Boring plastic containers aren't fun.
Did you get beat down by stupid people that ordered dishes with Szechuan peppers or were described as spicy, then get complaints from those people that apparently can't read?
To sum up, if you want any of the things that makes Chinese-American food unique from anything else, don't order from here.
Or leave a bad review, and get some free stuff, I guess. I haven't taken them up on...
Read moreOn February 10th, I and my three friend came down to eat for lunch specials, we came in it was busy, the receptionist said it was full are willing to waiting 5 to 10 minutes, I said yes, but I did notice their was a table with four seater, I suggested it, but he said “no their will be another table, after” 10 minutes pass, we got sit down, we order our drinks, then our food, because one my friends hasn’t been there. Honestly I already knew what I was getting, it would be nice if we order same time just in case my friend didn’t want lunch special, we got our egg drop soup at same time. We waited our food, I noticed there were more attentive with other four people group after us, they got food first before us, I wasn’t very unsatisfied, I ask our waitress if I speak to manager, she talked to him in there language it was possible they were not happy about it, so young guy who claim to be manager with no badge saying his name or tile, he didn’t gave out his name, I explain to him that we were waiting for long time for our food, that other four people group got served first, He said “ok”, I’ve told to “manager”, is there way to get discount because I’m unsatisfied with service, he looks me says “no I can’t do that” if your not happy with the food you leave it and go, don’t have eat it” said “ok I didn’t say the food isn’t good, talking about the service today, he claims that “it was rush hour time and company been given good service for ten years”, honestly well I was disappointed to told that because I said “not happy about the service today”, he said well “got to give a good reason”, I was getting upset “I just did you serve the people after us”,He left and then brought me my receipt and other group, he claims that we came on same time but difference they order appetizers, so I told what if I did order appetizers, he cuts me off says”but you didn’t”, ok that what your claiming to do to get service first, my friend step in told him that I’m sorry tell me to stop. So I stop we ate our food. Honestly this day didn’t treat us with no care, they didn’t offer refill for our drinks I would understand if they were short handed, but were not. I wouldn’t suggest coming in at...
Read moreBeen going here since the day they open and have introduced many of family and friends to this place. Lately I have noticed a huge change especially in the servers and food doesnt quite taste as good as before. One incident was I order fried rice with no eggs and the waiter brought out my order with eggs. I mentioned to him It had eggs in it and he took it back brought it back and I noticed it still had smaller signs of eggs. Called over the waiter and he told me he picked out all the eggs with his hands as he could.....I was in shock! Second bad experience was my daughter and I and my best friend that I just introduced to this place ordered eat and paid bill all separately. Waiter was horrible didnt bring alot of common things like silverware our orders with no rice no refills and kept saying WHAT to every question. We all just decided to still apply a tip with one bill included that. As we are walking to our cars a strange man I've never saw in all the years I have been going here, stopped us to ask. Why we didnt give a tip and the waiter should have gotten a tip on all tickets....to my surprise again I wasnt aware tipping was mandatory and as was explained there was a tip left and not everyone is able nor has to give a tip. He in return fixed his lips to yell us, his waiter served us 9 plates and she deserves a tip and for us not to come back. I recorded his outburst towards us as we entered back into the restuarant to ask for the owners information. He refused said he was the owner and to get out. In front of other guest he decided to explain the scene that was taking place. This man was ridiculously out of line Who follows someone to their car to ask why you didn't tip After spending over $100 he had the nerve to say dont come back. To disturb other guest to explain what was going on We mentioned that we would report his treatment towards us to yelp and BBB and he said So do it! I have never been treated as such and have never had a bad visit with this place until the past couple months. I suggest to whom ever the owner is get rid of him and if he has any parts of ownership this place...
