This review is strictly about the dim sum.
I was excited to find that they serve dim sum in Tucson. On arrival, I noticed the building is quite old and run down. Inside, the design and decor was standard. One of the employee's child was sitting at the table in front of me (super common in family-owned chinese restaurants) but his iPad was max volume and this was quite annoying while trying to enjoy a meal.
For context about my palate, I am Chinese American and have eaten dim sum all my life. Overall, I'd give this meal a 4/10.
Siumai ($6.50): 5/10. probably the tastiest item out of what I ordered. Decent pork and mushroom taste.
hagow (shrimp dumplings, $6.50): 4/10, standard shrimp flavor, nothing special. dumpling skin was also quite thick.
turnip cake ($5.50): 1/10. mine was sour and i'm pretty sure it's spoiled. it came with very few pieces of chinese sausage and dried shrimp.
chicken feet ($6.50): 2/10 not good. I dont even know how to describe the taste. kinda sweet, not much black bean flavor? I would not get it again
lotus leaf sticky rice ($7.50): 3/10. the sticky rice was decent but the only protein inside the rice was a small piece of chinese sausage. Nothing like what you usually get at other dimsum restaurants (mushroom, chinese sausage, scallop pieces, ground pork)
Tofu skin roll ($6.50): 4/10, not bad but nothing memorable.
I ordered enough food for 2 people and the check was $42 pre-tip. In my opinion, quite expensive for the quality you are getting.
I hate to rate a small Asian business so low but the food was simply not good to me. The food might be worth it if you are not as familiar with dim sum cuisine or if you really just want to satisfy a craving. They have egg tarts, pineapple buns, and a few more dimsum selections on fri/sat so I may return to try a few more items simply because there are no other...
Read moreTraveling through Tucson and staying near the airport, I was craving some sushi and decided to give this spot a shot. The reviews were raving about the dim sum, and they had shark fin, so why not?
You're given 6 different single sheet front and back printed laminated pages for their overwhelmingly large menu, and two pieces of paper like most dim sum restaurants to tick how many of each dish you want.
I ended up with the spicy octopus as an appetizer, the red dragon roll for sushi, and the Chinese sausage, quail egg, shark fin gow, and soup dumplings for dim sum. Way more food than I could reasonably eat, but I didn't really grasp the size of the dim sum dishes.
The octopus stated that it came with a spicy sauce for dipping, but, it had no sauce and seemed to have a spicy breading instead.
The red dragon roll was good. The thickly cut eel on top was warm from being freshly cooked and the tuna inside was chilled so it had a unique mouth feel. Not the star of the meal, which was surprising for a restaurant with sushi in its name, but very good.
The Chinese sausage had pretty bland bao dough, but the sausage itself was tasty albeit skinny.
This was my first time trying shark fin gow after falling in love with shark fin soup, and I was underwhelmed. Not a ton of shark, and the surprising addition of carrots.
The soup dumplings were awesome, but, they came in individual aluminum tins which made slurping the soup a bit difficult compared to using soup spoons. Their dough was also very thick on top and much thinner on the bottom so some soup got out.
Finally though, my absolute favorite was the quail egg shumai. It was like a Japanese "scotch egg". Pork wrapped around the quail egg and wrapped again in dough and steamed to perfection. So delicious. I could've eaten these as a meal by...
Read moreThis is our go to place for dim sum here in Tucson. These are the items that we love and order when we visit:
Shrimp rice roll - so simple, but yet so tasty. The dough is perfect, and the sauce is my favorite. It's light and not overpowering the whole dish like normal soy sauce would.
Turnip Cake - they have perfected this dish. The outside is crispy, and the inside is soft and not dry. It goes well with the chili oil and a little bit of soy sauce.
Shrimp Har Gow - basic dim sum dish, and is always delicious.
Pork Shumai - they do not skimp out and make their dumplings small. These are flavorful and are filling.
Stir Fry Udon Combination Noodles - the noodles are chewy and this dish is delicious. We get the combo to get a variety of meat. Everything is moist and flavorful.
Other must tries are: Egg tarts, shark fin shumai (not our favorite - but it's good), quail egg shumai (not our favorite - but it's good as well), yellow tail sushi roll, and their spicy yellow tail sushi rolls are excellent.
The steamed Chinese bun is just that. A steamed bun. No fillings - so don't get caught off guard if it is order.
Everything is made to order, and it does take some time for the food to be ready. Come and be prepared to wait, but it is worth the wait! The food is great! It seems like this restaurant is family owned, and I love the environment in there. They are very attentive and welcoming to...
