If you could give no stars I would...went in..lady was ok in beginning.we got our drinks..she brought them over on tray and just dropped the whole tray on table and walked away. Brought my egg roll out and after 1 bite ...it tasted mushy on inside. When I said something to her..she said no one has ever complained about her eggrolls. The sauce was thrown on plate..no dipping bowl or anything. Food came out and the lo mein was crunchy and my chicken and broccoli tasted tainted..we got up ..waited for lady to come out of kitchen and I told her what was wrong and she started yelling at me..in over 30 yrs no one has complained about my food..which after reading few reviews that was untrue. She said she was all by herself and food was fine. I told her I would be happy to pay for our drinks but food was unedible..she kept yelling. She said I just was too picky and wanted to complain and come into find place to relax....continued to yell even when she was checking out another customer who had take out order. The restaurant was completely empty at 5 in afternoon...was dark and dingy. I have never been spoken to this way before. Even my grandson asked why she was so mean. Completely unacceptable. Im sorry she didn't like criticism of her food but not gonna eat something that is gonna...
Read moreAfter eight years, we are moving back to Urbana. When we lived there before, we often went to Mayflower. We stopped in tonight and were immediately greeted by Carol - she’s as delightful as ever. She immediately knew us and even knew it had been eight years! She also asked about our 21 year old - as I have seen her do with kids many times, she always had a soft spot for the kids of Urbana. She even gave us special chopsticks for our meal!
The food at Mayflower: After growing up in California and living in Seattle, I have had nothing like it. It is amazing! Excellent is the best word I can think of. (It’s not like “Chinese” food you get from most high-volume places - it’s done from scratch, by hand, and with love and excellence. For a prior reviewer, sauces shouldn’t be thick, bright orange, and taste like artificial oranges - Carol’s sauces never do.) We had an eggroll (wrapped by hand) that Carol suggested dipping in hot mustard and soy sauce (amazing), hot and sour soup (with some of Carol’s amazing chili oil), and jalapeño beef (so amazing I can hardly wait for my next visit). Carol checked on us repeatedly and was a serious delight (her hospitality and food are amazing). I can’t highly recommend enough - and can’t wait for our next visit! We...
Read moreI recently moved to the Springfield/Urbana area, and I've been searching for my new Chinese restaurant. I've tried all the Chinese restaurants in Springfield, and I finally branched out and tried Mayflowers. The food was excellent, and even though it was a busy takeout night and I had to wait awhile for my food, the owner Carol was so sweet and kind. The only reason why I give it four stars instead of five is because I think their menu could benefit from combination options. I ordered an appetizer of crab rangoon, a small side of hot and sour soup, an order of pork fried rice and an order of Szechuan chicken. It was $25. I wish that they had combination plates that came with soup, an entree, and rice/noodles, or combination plates that had smaller portions of different entrees so that you can have multiple things. Ordering items a la carte gets expensive quickly, especially when ordering for just one person. Other than that suggestion, the food was phenomenal- the best I've had so far...
