Steak ’n Shake — Restaurant in Valparaiso

Very very disappointed. We have come here many times before it was delightful and clean. Great food. We were here tonight 8/25/2022. What a sad state. The dining room is FILTHY and I'm being kind. Windows dirty smeared, booths haven't been cleaned in I do not know when gross, walls in booths are covered in hand prints condiments and smeared with I honestly do not know what. Bathrooms are a disaster doors are covered in black nasty dirt. Floors are dirty. Ceiling vents are dirty. No waitresses. Kiosk. We had to IM SERIOUS CLEAN OUR OWN TABLE WITH WIPES from my car as none of the booths had been cleaned and food and nasty between seat cushions and wood or whatever it is where you sit. Milk shake machine We were told hadn't been refilled from 1st shift have wait for a shake. Sadly the whip cream was bad. I mean it was bad. The ice cream tasted like cheep vanilla ice cream with vanilla extract dumped in it. It was sandy and runny frankly IT WAS DISGUSTING it had a horrible taste it went into the garbage, THE ENTIRE SHAKE. Onion rings soggy and under fried. I ordered large my husband a medium We got pretty much same amount. We left...went across road shop when we came out 2 cooks were outside at 6:08 pm trunk popped open on car looking and talking about something PERHAPS THEY COULD CLEAN AS THE PLACE WAS DESERTED...NO WONDER WHY. We will NEVER GO BACK. EVER 28 BUCKS I'm hoping neither us end up in ER because if the area where the customers are is that nasty what does the kitchen look like where we can't see? I wish we had told them we wanted a refund left food on table. I don't know if it's under new management or they can't get help but I'd suggest they close for a day make everyone CLEAN. Very rude and very poor customer service. I pulled to the speaker and was told they couldn’t make shakes due to machine being down and to order when I was ready. I proceeded to place my order. I was rudely interrupted when trying to place my order again because apparently she couldn’t hear me. Then I was told to pull up to the window. When I got to the window the girl was rude and asked me what my order was again because she couldn’t hear me. So again I gave her my order. She closed the window walked away and was mocking me to the manager on duty. I yelled that I could hear her and she walked to the window said “ok I don’t care” closes the window and walked away. I sat waiting for a couple minutes for her to return to the window asking if I still wanted my food. I said yes and would like to speak to the manager. She told me she couldn’t give me my food until I paid for it. I said ok but you never told me what my total was. She argued with me saying she did when in fact she did not! Finally the manager came to the window. As I was trying to explain to her about how rude her employee was, she kept trying to interrupt me, saying I was the one being rude, she didn’t have time for me and she was allowed to refuse my service and slammed the window shut. I pulled away went inside to ask what the managers name was. The young girl I had asked said she didn’t know the managers name as she chuckled and said she would go ask. I could hear all the employees whispering about me to the manager. The manager then started yelling at me from behind the counter to not talk to her waiter and if I didn’t leave she was going to call the cops on me for trespassing. By far the WORST experience at any establishment I’ve ever been to. Doesn’t even deserve one...

This place is DISGUSTING. I walk in and the first thing I notice is how dirty this place is. I used to love steak n’ shake but now it is nasty and gross. There was trash in between seats and on the floors and none of the tables had been wiped, obviously. There were kiosks which weren’t very user friendly, and the staff offered absolutely NO help. In fact, i didn't know steak n’ shake had become automated at first. I sat at my table waiting for the waitress to come serve me for about 15 minutes, and she never did. She walked past me multiple times so she could’ve told me I had to order my own food. The food wasn’t very good either. The steak-burger was pretty good for the most part, but the top bun was very greasy. The chili was mostly liquid, which wasn’t the best. The fries were cooked way too long, it was very hard to even eat them because of how hard they were. I wouldn't be surprised if there were rats in this building. The bathrooms were even worse. There was a bunch of trash in the corner, and the urinal was clogged somehow. I didn't even try to use the toilet because it probably has multiple diseases on it and one of them had poop on the seat. The drinking machine tasted weird, like they hadn’t cleaned the soda machine in 10 years. I get that some businesses can have setbacks due to COVID, but this is absolutely inexcusable. Next time i’m in valpo, if there are no other options I will just STARVE. This was a very bad experience, the only reason it isn’t 1 star is because...
