If you go just for the red beans and rice, you'll get the most authentic-tasting red beans outside New Orleans you'll find anywhere. That's because this is a New Orleans based franchise. DELICIOUS! 5 stars for the beans!BUT, when I ask for no rice because of its high starch content, that much is deducted from the "large" container, which isn't enough to fill me up even with the rice. I don't have an especially big appetite, but I always order 2. That makes it a bit pricey, and cutting the serving seems pretty stingy and shortsighted for a business competing for my money with numerous other fast food joints nearby. I have on a couple of occasions even when I was ordering it with rice gotten home to find my containers just 2/3 full. There are always more cars next door at Miss Goldie's lined up for that lady's barely edible food. At least she fills you up. At any Popeye's I usually get coleslaw as a side, but at this Popeye's it is a sweeter than I like it. Since I live in Vicksburg I can take it home and add vinegar or lemon juice to tone down the sweetness, but it's bound to be loaded with sugar calories--poison for diabetics, and not great for any of us watching our weight--and sugary for no apparent reason except that someone at this particular Popeye's likes it sweet. Maybe Vicksburgers like it that way. Dunno. It's easy to add sugar, but you can't remove it. I think of cabbage as healthy. Most Popeye's I've visited do serve it that way, but that isn't the way it's served here. I've tried the fried chicken a time or two and it's very tasty and moist without being greasy. Maybe too much breading to be healthy, but if you're going for fried anything, you're not going for healthy. I once paid extra for all white meat, but got dark meat anyway. I once had to wait too long a time when the server disappeared with my credit card. It was worrisome, but nothing ever came of it. They seem to have speeded up the process and my card has remained in my line of sight in recent times. The biscuits as I recall were good, but cold by the time I got them home. I've rarely ordered anything else there, and don't feel I remember well enough to comment, only to say it was good, never bad. I really only go when I need a red beans fix. They tend to run out of different items before closing time. I guess that's to be expected from any place that works on a narrow margin as fast food places do. I've given this Popeye's 3 stars instead of 5 because they tend to fall short in unexpected ways, like no sausage on the side, like the po' boy bread isn't really po' boy bread, while the Gumbo Pot a couple of blocks away behind Walgreen's usually manages to serve it. Opening your bag and finding no napkins is another recurring disappointment, even after you've asked for extra napkins. When they close early, no one tells you. You wait to order and when you finally get tired and drive up to the window and honk because you're still being ignored, that's when someone tells you they ran out of food so they closed. A reusable CLOSED sign at the ordering station seems the bare minimum as a courtesy to would-be customers. Go for the excellent red beans and order 2 "large", unless your appetite is notably dainty, and order enough of the fried chicken to make a side dish. The chicken is very good. Buster Holmes in New Orleans, before Katrina, used to pack 'em in serving red beans and rice with a couple of pieces of fried chicken instead of sausage. You'd see people in business attire sitting next to hard hats next to a lady with three kids, black and white side by side at the very long counter. You can approximate a 5 Star Buster Holmes meal at Popeye's when Popeye's gets it right. You'll pay for 2 or 3 entrees per adult to do it, great for the occasional splurge, but not for most folk's...
Read moreToday, March 3, 2020 at around 12:30p, my husband and I went inside the restaurant to order our food and we experienced a horrible service. They acknowledged our presence but they ignored us by not taking our orders. We were standing there waiting for someone to take our orders but nobody is willing to do so. There is nobody in front of us and there’s nobody at the drive thru window either. We saw each one of them walking around pretending to be doing something and still keep on ignoring us for more than 5 minutes or so until my husband spoke up if somebody will take our orders. Then one of the employee asked one of them to finally take our orders. When our food showed up, we noticed that the fries was just thrown in a plate like it’s nobody’s business. We were disgusted by the very poor service. The managers and their employees at this location are incompetent to do a very simple job, to take good care of the customers who are paying their salaries. They are just there to collect a paycheck not putting in a good days work. Whoever hired them did not do so for the sake of the business. We, our families and friends are not going to come back to this...
Read morePurchased 2 of the 3 piece chicken tender side and biscuit. Cost about $14.94!! They had the NERVES to pu almost half a teaspoon red beans and rice in the tiny container! Just enough to cover the bottom.Hell they could have filled the container which holds about 3 tablespoons. For that amount of money, the container should be larger.
