My mom and I both enjoy Reuben’s so I searched online for a great spot to take her to lunch for her birthday. We were impressed with how clean The Bagel Baker Delicatessen is and with the variety or Reuben offerings on their menu! My mom ordered the regular corned beef Reuben sandwich and I ordered the open faced Combo Reuben Platter. Mine was so delicious and I thoroughly enjoyed it! One half of my mom’s sandwich looked perfect with lots of meat but unfortunately the other half had so much fat that it was not enjoyable. I apologized to my mom for all the fat in her sandwich and she said “I’ll get through it”, for $60 I really wanted my mom to like her lunch not to just get through it. When our server checked on us I told her my mom’s Reuben was really fatty and she said theirs are like that unless you order it extra lean then they will charge to remove the fat. If we had known this was a thing then I definitely would have ordered it extra lean so my mom could enjoy her birthday lunch. I told our server that I didn’t see on the menu that the corned beef should be ordered extra lean if you don’t want all the fat and she just said “that’s okay” and walked off. Well it wasn’t ok with me. The next time my mom & I want Reubens, I’ll take her...
Read moreRoute 58 Deli used to thrive at this location. When the owner passed away, the restaurant closed and Hampton Roads lost one of its last true deli’s.
Listening to WNIS I learned the deli had been revived under a new name. I took my 96 year old mom there (she loved the old deli) and we were very impressed. I ordered the 1/2 pound pastrami with Swiss on toasted rye. This is the most lean, moist, and flavorful pastrami I’ve had in decades! Not a hint of gristle.
My mom had the Matzo Ball soup and loved it. After she tasted my pastrami she vowed to get the soup and 1/2 sandwich next time.
One of the owners, George, stopped by to see how we were doing—a rare thing these days. We ended up having a long conversation and he was genuinely happy we stopped by.
I’ve seen reviews about the interior design being stark. It’a a real, NY style deli. The booths are comfortable, the food excellent. If you’re a ‘foodie’ and demand ‘ambience’—stay away and avoid posting negative reviews.
Deli’s (real one’s anyways) have always been about food, service and recognition of repeat customers. Ambience is for places reviewed by Wine Spectator.
If you love deli food (and briny pickles)—this...
Read moreIf you're looking for the best pastrami this side of anywhere, look no further than The Bagel Baker Delicatessen. Their Reuben is nothing short of legendary, perfectly grilled rye, melty Swiss, tangy sauerkraut, and that tender, peppery pastrami that practically melts in your mouth. It's the kind of sandwich that ruins all others for you in the best way.
And don’t get me started on the knish—especially when it’s stacked high with pastrami on top. The flaky, golden crust and warm, savory filling of the knish pairs perfectly with the mountain of pastrami layered on it. It was so hearty and satisfying that I had to take the rest home. And yes, it reheats like a dream.
The food alone is worth the trip, but what really makes this place shine is the incredible staff. From the moment you walk in, you're greeted like family. The atmosphere is cozy, the vibe is welcoming, and there's an undeniable sense of pride in everything they serve.
