I recently visited armstrongs , a so-called "country-style" restaurant, and it was a culinary disaster from start to finish. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by a musty smell that immediately set the tone for the evening. The decor was a mishmash of faded plaid tablecloths and dusty mason jars, making me question if they'd ever heard of cleaning or updating their style.
I started with the "famous" cornbread, which was as dry as a desert and tasted like it had been sitting under a heat lamp since 1998. The butter they served with it was more like plastic than anything remotely spreadable. The fried chicken, touted as a house specialty, was nothing short of tragic. It was soggy, greasy, and the batter had the consistency of wet newspaper. The mashed potatoes tasted like they came from a powdered mix, and the gravy—if you could even call it that—was an unappetizing, flavorless sludge.
For dessert, I went with the peach cobbler, hoping it would redeem the experience. Instead, I was served a limp, overly-sweet mess with canned peaches that seemed to have been sitting in syrup for far too long. Every bite was a struggle to finish, and by the end of the meal, I regretted every second of it.
The service was just as bad. Our waitress seemed annoyed to be there, tossing our plates onto the table like she was throwing scraps to animals. She didn’t ask if we wanted refills on drinks, and when we asked about the food, she gave us a blank stare as if she had no idea what was on the menu.
Overall, Armstrongs is the kind of place you avoid if you value your taste buds, your stomach, and your sanity. Save yourself the trouble—head to the nearest fast food joint and save yourself both time and money....
Read moreWon’t be coming back. We aren’t from the area; we are on Spring Break and took a day trip to check out the Antique Mall. While in the area, we wanted to try some of the local cuisine and get a taste of the town. So this seemed as a staple of the area, so we added it to the list. Firsty, the design of the restaurant is not good being that the main door swings right out into where cars are coming and going. We went in and looked like a bunch of chumps standing there either waiting to be greeted or seated. All the regulars in there knew we weren’t from around all the funny looks they gave us. The lady behind the bar finally got tired of us being in the way so she told us we can sit anywhere. It was nice that they still had tables marked off to keep distance, but the empty ones we could sit at still had clutter on them from the previous guests. So we had to sit in the side room where no one would see us. Thankfully someone else was already seated in there which gave a server a reason to come in there and spot us. All the empty seats, she only came with one old, paper copy menu, with grease and grime on it. The food was good, but no refills on drinks, no napkins on the tables, and when we asked for ketchup and napkins, it wasn’t until we finished our meal that the server returned with the items after she passed by and realized she forgot. And in this day and age, with a previous coin shortage and the germs to be transmitted, cash or check only. No sign to be seen that stated that. The lady took my wife’s id until she could run across the way to the bank to get cash. In the end, the Mall was great and we are going to be back again. But, we won’t be eating at...
Read moreI was coming off a long road trip. I was very hungry and wanted some good home cooking. For a supposed home cooking place like this, it seems like they could do better on their sides. The main meal comes with two sides and there are only four options mashed potatoes and gravy, coleslaw, baked apples, and I forgot one other. A side salad that you see in the photo cost me two dollars extra and it was the smallest side salad I never seen. I ordered liver and onions, which in itself was very good except the liver was literally a little over a quarter of an inch thick. That made it a little bit chewy and dry. The gravy & mashed potatoes was great. Later I saw on like a chalkboard specials of the day and they had lima beans on that but it wasn’t on the menu so I asked to add that and they were very good. The only reason I’m giving them a three out of four or five is because, the side salad was so small that they charged me two more dollars and that the liver was so skinny and a little chewy. The waitress that was at the counter had short hair kind of sandy blonde and wore glasses. She was kind of short with me, and a gentleman came in to order some chili and she flat out told him no he couldn’t do that. He wanted enough chili to feed 12 and she told him that wasn’t enough time that he needed 24 hours ahead and he said well I’m gonna pick it up tomorrow at the same time which is 24 hours and she said no that’s not enough time. Another waitress heard her and said, let me ask the cook in the cook said yes. How rude is that so that’s why they’re getting a three...
