My wife and I recently relocated to the Shenandoah Valley area and have enjoyed checking out the local restaurants and attractions. One of the things we have been looking for is a good BBQ restaurant, sadly Rack'em Smack'em Ribs is not it. It's not that the food is bad, it's not, it's okay and that's the problem. We can get "Okay" food anywhere. Their claim is that they have award winning BBQ and that may in fact be correct, but I'm not sure who awarded it and for what item(s).
We had the Beer Battered Mushrooms as an appetizer and we enjoyed them. They were very good. (one point for Rack'em Smack'em). We then ordered off of the menu. I ordered the center cut pork chops in with Honey Mustard sauce and was told it was no longer available because it wasn't very popular (then why is it on the menu) but that they had a pork tenderloin that was very similar and that it comes covered in gravy (other than both being pork, it doesn't sound similar at all). So I asked about the BBQ Platter: (2 bbq and choose from our signature Virginia red sauce, Carolina, Jack Daniels or Memphis, along with our slow roasted beef brisket) and requested the Virginia and Carolina sauces on the side. That’s when our waiter explained that sauce and meat were already mixed together (seriously?). I suppose the owners think this a good way to do it, but I can buy that combination in any major grocery store chain in the frozen meat section. I finally settled on the grilled chicken breast, which was okay. My wife had the BBQ pulled pork sandwich with the Virginia Sauce, which was also okay.
Our host/waiter was very friendly, helpful and informative. The restaurant is clean, if rather barren in its’ décor, but then again most real BBQ places are all about the BBQ, linen table cloths and napkins are just not necessary. Like I said, the food was okay, nothing great, nothing to make a special trip to eat there or pickup. Verona is only about 20 minutes from our house, but unless we are already near this restaurant when It’s time to eat, we will not be making the trip to get any of their “award winning BBQ”. This is one of those restaurants that thinks it’s the sauce that makes the BBQ which anyone that’s had really good BBQ knows that the sauce is just a condiment to be added by the consumer,...
Read moreI always have enjoyed this restaurant. Although today, the food was good as usual, but the WAITRESS was absolutely horrible. As soon as me and my family walked in she seated us and then acted like we were a bother to her. I have no idea what we did to upset her, but as far as I know we were polite to her. She was very rude and didn't make it seem like she wanted our business, and then she wouldn't even look at us the whole time we were at our table eating, even when we needed some refills. Not once did she check on us, eventually the other waiter got us refills after he noticed our empty glasses and he wasn't even taking care of our table! Thank you to him, as he is always there and makes me feel welcome. Finally, we go to pay for our meal, and I ask if we could get our check split in two, and the waitress gave me a death stare that I'm shocked I lived through. Rack em smack em, I always like your bbq, and I don't usually think too much of it if a server in any restaurant is sub par, but that lady made my experience today kind of crumby.I will be back someday, but if she is the waitress on the floor serving I may have to wait for another...
Read moreThis was our first time dining at Rackem Smackem Ribs. We stopped in just ahead of the dinner crowd and came into a foyer area that divides the restaurant. The left side is a large game room and bar. There are multiple pool tabes and slot machines. You can sit at the bar or choose a table to relax and enjoy a beverage. We chose the large dining room on the right side and were immediately greeted by our server, Blake He helped us with questions on the entrees and even knew where they purchased the fish locally that are offered on the menu! My husband chose the beef brisket platter and I chose the grilled chicken salad with a side of baked apples. Our selections were delicious! Blake was quite attentive checked on us multiple times during the meal. The food and service was excellent! We will definitely stop again in our travels. This restaurant is just off the interstate Verona exit. It is wheelchair handicap friendly with plenty of space between tables. It has plenty of parking for vehicles but not for RVs or vehicles towing campers. Larger rigs can park across the street in the church lot and have plenty of room to...
