Before y'all were born, I reckon, Danny was alive and kickin', and I figure he opened this restaurant just so he could have edible food in a town that didn't feature much but a coalyard at one end (next to the boatyard almost) and Yoder's Mennonite Dairy at the other (next to the Warwick County Court House almost). In between killin' machinery and the cows there were (and still are) several thousand nail salons, thereabouts. But it seems that man, especially, can't live on nail polish alone. Or even pizza.
But Danny's was a special place I guess as soon as Danny built it, and even though I lived far away in Hampton in the late 1960's--back when Hampton was Crabtown, U.S.A., and was annually manufacturing billions of tons of fertilizer from I think the surplus discarded crabshells and rotten leather, giving ALL of Hampton a memorable aroma about twenty-four hours a day--I would travel many miles to eat Danny's free deli pickles. If I was still hungry, I would order (and later pay for) a real Yankee deli sandwich. Except for Danny's Deli Restaurant, these were in pretty short supply between NYC and Miami Beach in them days (and still are) .
Although sadly Danny has passed away, Debbie and Bill Vaccarelli (no relation to Danny), an enthusiastic young married couple, purchased Danny's Deli Restaurant in 1990, and continue the Yankee tradition--today their daughter even bakes the beautiful and dangerously delicious cheesecakes which I am not allowed to eat!
Even though the deli display case which failed so many years ago--I think while Danny was still with us--can today only display the children's toys and other memorabilia which gradually accumulated in it over the years, you can appreciate the sentimental preservation of another time entirely. Here today you are still able to select among a variety of rye breads for your very generous deli sandwiches; here you have a wide variety of very generous sandwiches; here you may obtain iced tea sweetened OR unsweetened! No designer beers, kids, but a variety of soft drinks!
I had planned to photograph the menu for you, but Kim Vaccarelli, the Pastry Chef, informed me that Changes to the Menu are In the Works, so I took pictures of other things as I gobbled down my sandwich. I suppose Prices may be one of the changes, as they are certainly on the low side: but all of the food is so good, and has been so good for the past half century, I'll be as excited as everyone else to ring in...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreRefused service to us because I, a 93% disabled US Army Veteran, had with me a VA prescribed service dog for PTSD, migraines, anxiety attacks and panic attacks. My service dog is trained with the organization my VA doctor specified. I am prescribed to have him by Dr. Lazenby, of the Hampton VA, 24/7. After being seated we were confronted by a very large and threatening lady who was not just a little bit rude. Not just a little bit rude. It is a shame because this place is within walking distance, even for me with my mobility issues and we try to support local business. We had come here for take out during the pandemic, twice, each time met with the same rudeness by the same robust lady, as though she was mad at the world and we were the cause of the world. Picture someone with a gleaming brow and flys who makes you feel like you didn't do your homework you totally forgot about. At the time we thought it was the pressure of the pandemic but that has passed. Her brow and flys hasn't. I would suggest to the owners of Danny's Deli, the ones who would be fined, and not the rather heavy set lady or the sweet grandmother at the cash regeister, take a look, with their legal advisers, at the ADA, the federal law that protects Americans with disabilities. The penalties for refusing service to people with service animals is rather steep. I mean down payment on 2 houses steep. At the very least, it isn't very thankful to veterans that have served and are now in need of constant aid for their injuries. Not to worry, we got take-out from the local Chinese down the street (rather American situation don't you agree?). Turned away from an "American Deli" but served by a Chinese take-out because I'm a disabled US veteran with a service dog. What a "Thank you for your service." But I remember their pickles were good at Danny's Deli; kind of apropos don't you think?...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI hate to write this kind of review but I ordered a sandwich for my sister the other day. Cold turkey sandwich with Tomatoe mayo cold white bread with potatoe salad and a piece of carrot cake. I almost fell on the floor. $25.00 ????????? The sandwich wish $8.95 if it had 1/4 pound of turkey on it I'd be surprised shaved turkey. 1.04 for 2 very thin sliced Roma tomatoes. Then the potatoe salad wasn't even a 1/4 of a cup . $3.95. Not sure how much carrot cake was. But came out to $24 and some change with tax. When I told my sister she was what the hell. She said when she goes there she gets sandwich combo which includes potatoe salad. She doesn't remember being charged xtra for tomatoe either. Especially a dollar 4cent fir 2 VERY THIN SLICED Roma tomatoes. I asked the lady at counter if she knew my sister before ordering after some explaining she said yes she remembered. So I depended on her giving me what my sister ordered usually since she tries to go there alot not take me to the cleaners. I don't go there for this reason . When I get a sandwich I can see paying extra for fries but now they even charge for potatoe chips. That why I don't go there. I did use to like there pickles now they don't taste like they use to so I tell her forget pickles. IM SORRY THIS ISNT NY CITY . ITS A RUN DOWN OLD SHOPPING CENTER TO PAY THESE KIND OF PRICES TO ME IS A RIP OFF. I GUESS THATS WHY I DONT GO THERE ANYMORE! My sister likes it but she can have it. I guess I'm just warning people to be prepared for spending alot when...
