So driving from PA to NC, found this place on google with tons of great reviews. It's mother's day and as we get to the entrance there is a note that says they are closing at 4. It's 3:50, so rather than try and eat in like jerks, we figured we'll ask about take out. We asked the staff member at the register if they are ok with still taking orders since it's so close to 4pm. She says let me go ask the kitchen if that's ok then returns a moment later and she says they'll do it. We take a minute or two to look at the menu again and put in our order.
About 10 minutes after we had place our order my wife says that she was feeling uncomfortable because one of the kitchen staff members keeps staring at us. I normally would have dismissed this as her just being paranoid but as I starting watching the TV in the diner area i noticed that there was a staff kitchen member with dark wavy/semi curly hair, with a short cut full beard, and a green collar shirt who kept staring at my family during his activities while he was at the register, cleaning up near the table by the register, and while drinking near the connecting area to the kitchen. That dude made the whole experience just terrible.
During the entire time we were waiting, the wait staff and kitchen staff were off and on notably chatting about customers coming in at the last minute to place orders around the edge where the kitchen and the dining area connect. Everyone in the dining area could hear them, it was extremely passive aggressive.
Once we got our food I thanked the original staff member we spoke to and we headed out. She was the only one we saw who didn't participate in the passive aggressive chatting.
I wish we just would have been told "it's too close to us closing and we aren't able to make the order, sorry". We would have understood and just picked another place to eat. Instead my family got to enjoy a group of employees be passive aggressive and experience a very creepy dude constantly stare at us.
Food wise - kids quesadilla, chicken wrap, and mac and cheese I was told were good. Vinegar pulled pork was average at best. The potato salad...
Read moreThe food here is pretty good. Nice portions and nice flavor. The meat can be a little dry but it's nothing the sauce can't fix. The sweet potato fries are awesome along with the peach ketchup. The pigtail curly fries and onion straws were really tasty as well. They have this cute little pig game on table to pass the time and there is a Television on one wall too. The service here is attentive and kind and the restaurant is very clean and well maintained.
The bathrooms are amazing! (See photos) well stocked, clean and more welcoming than any restroom in the area. Stylish and stocked with anything you might need. They even keep diapers and wipes by the changing table!
Now for the downsides. Be forewarned if you come with a group of four or more the seating area is small and crowded. We felt really claustrophobic at the table in the middle of the dining area and moved to a booth. But they were nice about it so no issues there. The drinks are overpriced in my opinion, three dollars for a fountain soda and two dollars for an ice tea, yes you get refills but how many glasses do you really drink at dinner? Two at most on average so these prices are a bit much even for 2017. Also, if you want a slab of ribs with sides (and of course we all want sides because they rock) be prepared to drop around thirty bucks, $21 for a half slab.
Overall a nice place with good food and we...
Read moreWe stopped here for dinner on the way back from Roanoke to Richmond, as its pretty conveniently located right off I-81.
It was nice out so we sat on the patio with the adorable chairs. The server was very nice and accommodating, even when it began to rain: we moved inside and no one had a problem with that; we had a table instantly.
We ordered the Crab Queso Dip which was phenomenal: it was a perfect ratio of flavors, where I could taste the crab and the cheese and neither overpowered the other. The hush puppies were tasty too (said as someone who doesn’t care for them usually).
I ordered the smoked brisket special with sweet potato fries, and both were great. The brisket fell apart and the fries were fresh and crispy. They have two styles of housemade BBQ sauce on the table, the vinegar NC style (where the founder is from) and a tomato style which was quite tangy and bright. We decided we liked combining the two.
My companion ordered the pulled pork, also yummy, as well as the Brunswick Stew and the Smoked Tomato Bisque which he enjoyed immensely.
We passed on dessert, though there were many options. But not the bourbon pecan pie which is on their website menu. Our server said she’s worked there for 3 years and they haven’t had that as far as...
