I was sad to learn of The Royal Warsaw closing. In search of another to serve up my favorite food, I was referred by a polish woman located over 20 miles and several counties away to Tatra Haus. And has now become my new favorite place. We went for early dinner with no reservation, was seated immediately in the beautiful left dining area and across from the kitchen door (more on that later).
Started with a Zywiec Porter, and a flavored martini (I heard was very good).
Prepared to order a few entrees (just for myself), was happy to see the Tatra Trio appetizer; a generous portion of polish favorites: pierogies, grilled sausage / kielbasa, and golabki, with the dipping sauces for each. For Saturday dinner, I ordered the dumplings (since only offered on the weekends). 4 good sized mountain dumplings, light and smothered in mushroom sauce, was an absolute delight. The side of goulash was nice and hot, and loaded with meat. The celery-carrot salad was amazing; I only see it is offered also with the chicken kiev, but I recommend adding it to an entre if possible. My date (who is Polish and grew up eating homemade Polish food) had the kielbasa entree. She mentioned many times to me and our waitress, Natalia (who was perfect, btw) that the meal was so much better than her aunt's cooking.
Was too stuffed for dessert, but I did give a $20 cash tip for the kitchen staff (at the restaurant, refer to the last page of the menu on the bottom), and they did not disappoint. Had everyone in the dining room smiling!! Sitting in the left dining area across from the kitchen door was no issue at all. Well insulated for no kitchen noise, just a bell ringing when an order is ready for serving. A nice touch.
My apologies for the half-eaten dinner in the photo. I was that excited to dig in, and it was good enough to stop...
Read moreNamed for the mountains that separate Poland and Slovakia, this family-owned establishment is located on Main Avenue in Wallington. Since itâs street parking, we were able to park across the street at the public library. Upon arrival at Tatra Haus as first-timers tonight for dinner, my partner and I were greeted by the host/owner, Sebastian, and made our way to a busy main dining room to our table. Reservations are highly recommended, especially on weekends, and can be easily made by calling the restaurant. The interior is designed as a Highland chalet with traditional, ornate, hand-carved wood furniture and folk art decor. The menu focuses on the regional cuisine from the south and mountains of Poland, specifically Zakopane. Written in Polish with English translations, it has some familiar items such as borsch, pierogi, potato pancakes, etc. As an appetizer, we ordered and shared the potato pancakes, accompanied by apple sauce and sour cream. For our entree, we decided on the pork cutlet with mashed potatoes and cucumber salad, as well as the trout with mashed potatoes and vegetables. Complimentary rolls started our meal. The food came out hot, tasty, and the portions were huge. There were several birthday celebrations taking place, and we got the honor to hear the staff singing âHappy Birthdayâ in Polish to one of the celebrants. Dressed in traditional garb, the staff were friendly and attentive to every aspect of our meal, especially our server, Paulina. The price was comparable to the area. If you are into Polish food, you'll love this place, as itâs authentic, which we...
Read moreGot there at 4 pm so we could spend an hour at the bar. We pretty much had the bar to ourselves. Sebastiån was the bartender. What a Great Time we had with Sebastiån. He was cordial & knowledgeable in Polish history. I had one of their many custom made drinks which was the Vodka, Midori Melon & Pineapple juice, delicious. Not only did he answered our questions but he made you feel like you were in that time & place. Sebastian mentioned that the cuisine of the restaurant is based from the Highlander culture style of southern mountain area of Poland. We were having such a good time with Sebastiån that we wound up having dinner half an hour later. Finally got seated at the table, had the Highlander Pierogi stuffed with mixed cheeses & potatoes as an appetizer, normally it's an entre. Delicious! Then the entrees, Potato pancakes with goulash, delish! The other was Pork knuckle cooked in beer. Delish!, I recommend these two dishes without a doubt. What a great experience it was that evening. Sebastiån thank you for starting such a pleasant evening! Spreading the word to friends & family. Of course, don't forget about the service which was excellent. Sebastiån Thanks again, stay healthy & safe!...
