I've traveled through a lot of Central America, but haven't been to El Salvador. When going out with friends last night, we wanted to try something new. When considering Mi Tierra we thought "it's probably pretty much like Mexican - and we already have a favorite Mexican place." But we decided to try it. Turns out there's no way to mistake Salvadoran food for Mexican. Each dish was something entirely new to us. We loved every bite.
We had pupusas (filled tortillas) which were really good. The garnachas (carnitas on a small tortilla) were eye-rollingly good. They were so satisfying to bite into with the tortilla being a bit crunchy and chewy at the same time. This was my favorite bite of the evening. The chile rellenos were great. The steak delicious. The ceviche was so refreshing and really, really good. The plates were plentiful, too. No skimping on anything. Great homemade hot sauce, too. So much of what we tried was new to us. Other Latin American countries may have dishes with the same names, but the Salvadoran take on them was really a pretty exciting discovery.
The family that owns the restaurant wait on you - and they are lovely, welcoming people. When we walked in, every table except one was occupied by Latinos - this, to us, was a great indicator about the authenticity of what we were about to have to eat.
The restaurant has been there since 1997. Why it took us so long to discover it is beyond me. It flew to the top of our favorites list - and they are going to get to know us because they'll be seeing us often enough!
EDIT: This place has changed hands and we had one of the worst meals ever here and will not be going again....
Read moreWe have always enjoyed our meals at Mi Tierra, but tonight we decided to order like half the menu for Thanksgiving, and we are so happy with our decision! First, everything was carefully packaged and placed in a box, including the soup. Normally I wouldn't mention this, but we've been ordering more takeout lately because of Covid and it makes a huge difference in how the food tastes at home and if it survives the car ride. Second, the food was all excellent and so flavorful. My personal favorite is the sopa de pollo with a side of plantains, but as you can see, everyone in my family loves something different. The portions are also very generous. You will probably definitely either have leftovers or a food coma from eating everything because it...
Read moreEnjoyed a reasonably-priced dinner at this Guatemalan/Salvadoran restaurant on Moody St. While most of the meal was pretty good – and I agree with other reviewers that the house hot sauce is quite good – a couple of things were not as good as other restaurants in the same price range. Avocados in the salad had several ~½" blemishes, tortilla chips were store-bought and very salty.
That said, the carne asada (with the hot sauce) was good, as was the pollo asado. The rellenitos were delicious, though too sweet for an appetizer, more like dessert. Guacamole was quite good, chunky and a little spicy...
