We visited Hush Harbor in D.C. during the H Street Festival. The line was long as to be expected, but that was a one-off because of the festival. When we got in, we were asked to put our phones in the Yondr lock cases. That brought back nostalgia since I used those in high school 10 years ago in Philly lol — good and bad memories — but I didn’t really mind locking my phone. Honestly, I liked it because people need to socialize instead of being on their phones all the time. If it was an emergency, I still had my Apple Watch or could ask the host to unlock the case. The bar lines were long. I wanted a drink but after waiting 10 minutes I gave up and just found somewhere to sit. I wasn’t mad though, I’m a bartender, I know how it goes, and they were clearly busy. Neighborhood bars with top notch cocktails and welcoming vibes are hard to come by, but Hill Prince in Washington, DC has all that and more. The design aesthetic reminds me of a speakeasy with a dash of bohemian art fixtures and colors sprinkled throughout the two story establishment. Head to the back and you will be immersed In an environment full of mother’s nature beauty which is a dramatic contrast to the busy streets of DC. Spearheaded and owned by Chef Rock Harper of Hell’s Kitchen fame, you can definitely tell that he is passionate about his latest endeavor. The stands out for me were the following: - Margarita Sipper - Aperol Spritz - Bees Nees

I hardly get to visit DC, so I was excited when my cousins recommended we stop at Hill Prince after a show we attended at the Kennedy Center. Rock Harper, who is also responsible for my favorite gem Queen Mothers in Arlington, owns this establishment. This is worth mentioning because Rock is an incredible chef and I remember unexpectedly meeting him during my first visit to Queen Mothers years ago. During a random lunch stop, I ordered that infamous chicken sandwich and was soon greeted by him halfway through my meal. I knew who he was in an instant and felt honored he took the time to make sure my food turned around great.

The atmosphere of Hill Prince was smooth and welcoming. I shouldn’t have been surprised when I saw Rock behind the bar working, but it added a nice humble touch to the service. The drink menu was filled with a variety of different mixes. My cousin recommended the “Bees Knees”. I tend to avoid Gin on any given basis but my cousin told me I wouldn’t be disappointed. After screaming along to my favorite songs from the concert we had just left, this drink was refreshing and perfect. I would order it as my primary drink whenever I return.

There is a beautiful outdoor courtyard towards the back when you walk past the bar area. It was raining during my visit, so we headed upstairs to an intimate sitting area that was perfect to be able to converse with my family and enjoy my drink. A few minutes later, I saw Rock peek in to (what I assume) check in on how we were enjoying the drinks he made. He nodded and smiled when saw us chatting and it made me remember the first interaction I had with him at Queen Mothers.

I’m a bit disappointed to learn after the fact that there’s also an Old Bay Popcorn feature on the menu as those are 2 of my most favorite things combined. However, I now have something to look forward to for next time. This did not disappoint and I enjoyed my visit at...

Beautiful space — redone with tall exposed wood ceilings and brick, great open space, a fully redone upstairs level, a back courtyard with seating, and, a personal favorite, another back building with bench seating and jumbo-sized bar games (Jenga, connect four). Excellent spot for a weekday beer with ample space for you and your friends, and even when it’s packed the layered layout leaves room to spread out.

Bartenders are friendly and helpful, owner (Tony) is a very cool dude. They had Yuengling and Bell’s Two Hearted on draft, pricing was exactly what you’d expect for DC. For all the space you get access to throughout the three levels and back game-room, drink pricing is a deal.

Don’t be turned off by the required proof of vaccination —it’s reasonable, quick and low key. Just bring a picture or some type of confirmation that you’ve been vaccinated. They checked upon entry. I had a picture of my vaccination card and that was fine — it’s easy if you have it pulled up when you walk in.

Lots of scooters around here, and there’s a capital bike share dock one block away which is convenient. Plenty of space in the back game room to sit down and eat if you have takeout. Unexpectedly had one of my best nights out in DC at Hill Prince hanging in the game room.

Easy decision —...
