Chapala Family Mexican Restaurant — Restaurant in Waterloo

We were very impressed with this restaurant tonight. My boyfriend is from Guatemala and I just moved to the US from Mexico a few months ago. It is impossible to find good Mexican food. While Mexican food in the US is NOTHING like the food found in Mexico, it has its own unique flavor.

This restaurant had good flavors. The food was good portion sizes and had a nice presentation. Staff was quick and attentive, smiley and positive. A great experience. To add, it is the best Mexican food I have had outside of Mexico. Usually, the flavors in Mexican restaurants are so false, strange, and food isn't even prepared like it is in Mexico that I'm so confused when I get it and can't even eat it. This time, I ate a huge chunk of my food and brought it with me. The food is good. I ordered the Chimichanga/Enchilada dinner. The Chimichanga was chicken and the Enchilada was shredded beef. I had the refried beans and the rice. Sour cream and guacamole were included. While the Chimichanga was cooked perfectly and had a great flavor I cannot say the same for the shredded beef Enchilada. The beef tasted like Bar-B-Q beef. I even had my friend taste it and she agreed. I also didn't care for the salsa. Although the flavor was okay - not the best - it was too spicy for me. I like to enjoy my salsa without my mouth being on fire and having to take a drink of water after each bite. When I asked if there was a milder salsa the waitress informed me the only other one they have is even spicier. If they had better salsa I would enjoy their food better and give them...

Ordered pickup tonight ... do NOT recommend! I've never left a review (let alone a negative one) but when I called the restaurant back to let them know my order was wrong the lady I spoke with hung up on me! Ordered 2 chicken fajita chimichangas, 1 without green peppers & guac and add Steak. Received 2 STEAK fajita chimichangas, one with no green peppers. The add steak & no guac was in the same special instructions as the no green peppers, so how is one request fulfilled but the other 2 were missed when they were in the same sentence? No one apologized.. that's all I was looking for. Tbh .. the food was terrible! I've eaten better chimichangas out of a microwave!
