My wife and I were in from out of town for New Balance Indoor Track Nationals. It was the Saturday before St. Patrick’s Day. The place was packed with a crowd of what I assume were mostly regular customers from the area. We squeezed in and sat on some bar stools by the window. I needed to have my wife ask to get the Big East Men’s Basketball Championship game on one of their TVs because I had laryngitis and could barely speak loud enough to be heard. Anyway, long story short, the owner came over and started razzing me in a good natured way about being a St.John’s fan in Boston. We bantered back and forth for several minutes, sharing stories about our backgrounds, and then he bought us a round. He treated us like old friends, as did several other people in the bar. It’s the most welcome I’ve ever been made to feel in any establishment, and there have been plenty. On top of that there were a good selection of cold beers on tap and the food was great. If you’re ever in that area and love excellent local bars with friendly people, then give Donohue’s a visit. I’ll definitely make it my business to go back there whenever...
Read moreAs a first timer in the east coast and in Boston, I thought this neighborhood bar sounded like a good option. I'm normally not one to jump to conclusions but as a POC this was an unpleasant experience.
Apparently unless you're white, you're not a priority. I was ignored from the moment I walked in while other customers were welcomed with a cheerful hello. I was asked to find another place by one of the regulars when I tried to sit at the bar. It was another 30 mins before I was able to get someone to take my order. I should have walked out but I'd had a long day and was unsure about any other options nearby. All I wanted was a beer and a little space to read my book.
It's very unfortunate that in this day and age that people take time out of their life to be so rude and discriminating.
If you're a person of color I'd give this place a pass. Not worth giving people like this your time or money. Too bad, I really liked the music and the food was decent.
To the owners, colored people's money is as good as white people's. Don't be...
Read moreThis is legitimately my first review but, in this case, feel like the owner should know. My wife and I moved around the corner from here about a month ago and thought it’d be fun place to check out. We ordered two margaritas, which were basically a pound of margarita mix and a splash of tequila in beer glasses. Neither of us finished them. We had a nice conversation with the man next to us who had ordered a bud lite and french fries. We closed out and decided to pick up his tab. The bartender gave us a bill for $64. Charging us $38 ($19 each!) for our margaritas (what you would charge at an upscale NYC nightclub) and charging us for a goose IPA ($10) rather than a bud lite. When I went to say something and ask a question, the bartender was already gone and decided to ignore us. I can absolutely tell you we will never be going back. The whole thing felt very scammy. It attracts locals and the bartender clearly wanted to take advantage of people he hadn’t seen before. It’s too bad, we live down the street and were looking for...
