So this evening my roommate, boyfriend and I walked over to the Halfway Cafe in Watertown as we do about once a week. As usual we got some burgers for dinner and a round on drinks to start. Over the 2 hours that we were there along with food, we consumed 4 beverages. But upon asking for our 4th beverage we were told by the waitress that we had "like 5 drinks and we would have to wait to have an additional". Mind you we are all 28-33 years of age (not trying to rage out of control on a Monday night). At no point were we loud or out of control (not even out of our seats).
So at this point we closed our tabs and left the rest restaurant. As soon as we got outside we all had the same feeling. We were cut off and rushed out for no reason. We later found out that they were closing early and instead of telling us this, which we would have understood, they told us we were basically cut off. So since we are adults and clearly weren't intoxicated, we decided not to make a scene by going back in the restaurant and thought we would just call and speak with the manager upon arriving home.
We called the manager, Philip, who felt it unnecessary to introduce himself when he picked up the phone. We attempted to express our concerns/frustrations to the manager, expecting the professionalism that we have received from Halfway Cafe representatives for years. Not only did he not attempt to diffuse the situation and keep us as patrons but he threatened us to "come say it to his face" and then proceeded to hang up on us.
Needless to say, due to Phillip(the manager in Watertown on Monday evenings) we will no longer be conveniently walking down to The Halfway Cafe to spend our money once a week. It may be farther away but we will find a place that makes us feel welcome...
Read moreAs I left my girlfriend at the Watertown yard I realized I had a couple of hours to kill. While walking home I thought I’d play a few Keno games, have a couple drinks and enjoy a cheeseburger and fries so I stepped inside the Halfway Cafe. The bartender (let’s just call her warthog) ignored me for at least 10 minutes before my Keno ticket was entered and my Bud Light was served. A very pleasant waitress served me popcorn and wished me a Happy New Year and I enjoyed some football on the TV. Soon I realized the warthog beat me for $15 on my Keno ticket so I tried to get her attention to settle it up. At this point it was clear that her mission was to make me the man in the bar to receive the least attention from her. It was New Year’s Eve and the warthog knew many of the patrons and conversed with everyone seemingly spreading good cheer, but not me...it was as if I was a leper. When I ordered my second drink the warthog had decided that I was cut off. I was told the reason was her manager downstairs didn’t like the way I filled out my Keno card. Probably because I was squinting at the card due to my poor eyesight or maybe it was because I wasn’t one of the warthog’s regular crew. So I settled my bill with the pleasant waitress (not the gross-looking warthog) and went on my way. Unfortunately I cannot give a review for any of the food because the warthog never showed me a menu. My review is simple and it’s in the name, this place is just halfway decent. There are much better and friendlier places to...
Read moreThis place made an already horrific day even worse. I got a fish and chip and....yikes. Very low quality, mushy fish with bland breading. It tasted exactly like those cheap boxes of Gordon's fish you get from the freezer section at the grocery store. Fries somehow managed to be burnt, bland and cold at the same time. The coleslaw was missing most of the ingredients. They served me plain cabbage and carrots in a bowl with parsley on it. They must be overstocked on parsley because it came on EVERYTHING we ordered. My friend ended up with ice cold clam chowder and some painfully mediocre mac and cheese that cost 20 dollars and tasted like it was out of a box. The service was pretty good/friendly but honestly the food was just plain bad/overpriced and once I took a better look around the place seemed dirty as well. I saw multiple people leaving with their plates barely touched. At one point the guy sitting at the next table took a bite of his food and said "Ew what the hell is this?" I just quickly paid and left very...
