We're "frequent flyers" at Rex’s Innkeeper in Waunakee. We go there quite often for fish fry or their great little steak sandwich. My husband really enjoys their scallops, and we both love the salad bar. I've attended 3 class reunions there, and my husband's Deforest Alumni banquet. The food and service are always good. This spring, we attended the Mother's Day brunch buffet and enjoyed it. I asked the hostess if they were considering doing brunch more frequently, and she said they were. I was driving through Waunakee last week and saw a banner announcing Sunday brunch! WOOHOO! I called for reservations and went this morning. The buffet was basic but good. For me, the star of the table was a smoked salmon spread with cream cheese, capers, and dill to be eaten on crispy, crustini crackers. Outstanding! After we finished our Bloodys and coffee, we settled up. I stopped at the hostess station and asked if the brunch was going be a "thing." She said not really. Just then, the chef appeared. I suggested that they add the smoked salmon spread to the Friday fish fry salad bar because it was so good. He would consider it and showed me the upgraded menu, pointing out they had added chilled crab dip and crackers as an appetizer and crab cakes to the entrees. Wow! I suggest Rex’s bring back Sunday brunch every other month or so. It wouldn't have to be an event brunch like Easter or Mother's Day. How about a "Just for the Heck of It" brunch or "Because We Felt Like It!" I really believe their clientele would love it, as so few restaurants serve any type of...
Read moreI'm giving this 2 stars because the wait staff was amazing. The two women who served our group were top notch professionals in every way. We had a large group for a birthday celebration and nobody commented about the food at the time because they didn't want to detract from the event but afterwards.....The general consensus was the food was bland OK or terrible. The fried cod fish sticks were pretty bad/sad. A couple people said their steak was good but not $30 good. Many years ago my family would eat at Rex's on a regular basis. It was always a great meal so that's why we decided to have our event there. There needs to be some serious updating. People don't mind paying for a good quality meal but there should be some real fresh food, properly prepared and presented in a better way. Six rather funny ( we weren't sure they were completely cooked) looking shrimp around a large mound of fresh kale isn't appetizing at all. Supper clubs are a unique and wonderful Wisconsin tradition that needs to be preserved. Top quality food and beverages with talented people preparing them is the answer. Sadly I can safely say there's 25 or so disappointed people who...
Read moreOk first of all I have worked in the industry for 15+ years, from the dive bars to the finest of the fine. We started at the bar good service and good drinks. Moved to the dining room for dinner and that’s where everything that could go wrong did. Ordered my filet medium rare, came out medium well. Sent it back and the next time it came out RARE! Which is fine by me but people who want a medium rare would have never ate this, as it was cool in the middle. My boyfriend ordered his prime rib medium rare came out kinda medium but mostly medium well. Server asked to recook it he said forget it. His drink was empty when she checked in on our meal and never asked if he wanted another one. My drink was empty when she dropped off my second steak and never asked if I wanted another one, easy add on to the bill. Shrimp was WAY over cooked! Salad bar had a nice selection but that is about the only nice thing about this place. Will not go back and will not recommend it to anyone. When I’m paying 80+ for dinner it should be right the first time. Sorry but it shouldn’t...
