4.5/5 -- a really great hidden gem a bit of ways off of the downtown Hachie square.
D Restaurant Latin Cuisine is one of those unexpected surprises — tucked inside a nondescript building that gives no clue of the lively, sort of upscale experience waiting inside. The atmosphere was fun and vibrant, with great music and stylish decor that set the tone for a lovely evening.
Our server was very sweet and attentive. She seemed a little nervous and like she might’ve been practicing memorizing orders — but we appreciated her effort and warmth throughout the meal!
We started with drinks and appetizers. I don’t drink, but the others at the table loved their flavored margaritas — just a heads up that if you want the spicy margarita to really bring the heat, ask for extra spice. I had the hibiscus tea, which was refreshing and lovely.
Appetizer-wise, the brisket queso was a standout and definitely worth the $3 upcharge over the standard chorizo version (according to our repeat visitors). The pupusas (comes with 3) and yuca fries were also delicious. They bring chips and two salsas — a roja and a black bean one. While the chips were a little too thick and crunchy for our taste, they held up well to the queso.
Entrees were a mix of hits and small misses. The ropa vieja was hands-down the table favorite — deeply flavorful and tender. The pollo guisado was also excellent, though the rice didn’t quite measure up. The pasta latina surprised us in the best way with its unique flavors. The carne asada could’ve used just a touch more pink, and the bread it came with wasn’t our favorite — but taking the waitress’s advice to order a side of tortillas made all the difference. The lamb burger was just okay — a little overcooked, and the crinkle fries on the side weren’t seasoned or crisp enough to finish.
Prices are on the higher end, so it’s definitely more of a treat-yourself night out — but for the quality of many of the dishes and the welcoming atmosphere, it’s worth it.
We’d absolutely recommend D to anyone looking for a special night out in Hachie. It’s a great little joint with heart, flavor, and potential. We'll...
Read moreMore than meets the eye! I knew this place was born from a food truck at Railport Brewery... And remember liking the tacos the one time I had them... But in two years haven't stopped in because the exterior of the building is VERY unassuming.
If the food/service/atmosphere were represented by the exterior, I wasn't motivated to check it out. However, you step in to a different world! The service was very friendly and helpful. Carlos took the time to answer copious questions about his background and the type of food we were going to experience. His suggestions were relevant and appreciated (and on point!). The food, from the chips that were authentic in appearance and whose flavor and crunch didn't disappoint, through the starter empanadas, main dishes (a Cuban inspired dish that my customer loved and the fried fish tacos that reminded me of my old home of San Diego), and finally the delectable peach empanadas (a twist on a delectable gooey peach pie), was all prepared with care and attention to detail.
The main dining area is simple and connected to the kitchen, there's a detached bar that had a cozy vibe (opens at 230), and an overflow dining area that was decorated appropriately and had pleasant cultural music playing.
I know I'll be coming back with my wife and see many more business lunches there. It's great to have a high quality, unique restaurant in the downtown area, with the added benefit of being open six days a week (closed Sunday) which is unique in the area. A lot of restaurants nearby are closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
Thanks for bringing such a pleasant option to Waxahachie! May you have success and be there for us for...
Read moreService was great and the food was good.. not great though. I got carne asada which was definitely good but i prefer the one at Mi Casa on the other side of town which is thinner and more tender. I guess here they give you more meat but does not translate into a better dish. The salsa was not remotely spicy which is weird.. like a chunky tomato sauce.. bean dip was great though. Cocktails were good, could use some improvement though, although I had them make me an extra spicy top shelf margarita (not on menu) and it was really good. The menu is small and missing some things i would have liked to have seen like a chile relleno or camarones en agua chile. The people are extremely nice and friendly which honestly can skew the review system because people are reluctant to criticize a business when the staff/owners are so personable. The server was very likeable but made a few mistakes which, for example, lead to me ordering albondigas which is meatball soup but i never got the soup.. hopefully it wasn't on the bill but I forgot to check. I may have to come back to try the soup. We had something like an empanada for appetizer but we did not like it very much.. it was filled with only meat.. seemed like it could use some cheese or something also.. a tad on the dry side even with the sauces on top. My wife ordered the pork chop which was a good pork chop but not so good i would come back for it but i'm not a huge...
