I had heard great things about this place from the locals we went to dinner with, but it didn’t live up to the hype. Some things weren’t their fault, some were.
This year is a particularly bad mosquito season from what the locals tell me. But having a restaurant on a marsh, that doesn’t accept reservations, and an outdoor waiting area really should make more of an effort to protect their guests. Nearly two hour wait for dinner while being the dinner for mosquitoes isn’t great.
Once seated in their enclosed tent I was pleased. For a moment. There were less mosquitoes than the patio, but the gaping holes in the screen only slowed the onslaught.
Service was slow, but I am certain the servers were dead on their feet by this time. Cocktails were great, and I would have ordered more than one of the opportunity had arisen.
I ordered fish tacos. One of the reasons I ordered tacos was because the locals I was with were commenting on how good the French fries were. And the menu indicated the tacos were served with fries. My order arrived, and it did not have fries. When I addressed this with my server, I was told they do not come with fries. However you can look at their menu online and it will give you the impression that it does. I then attempted to order a side of fries and was told the kitchen was closed. Ugh. Also the tacos were not assembled. Really they should have been called fish fajitas. They were difficult to assemble, as I had no silverware. Thankfully someone else had silverware that they were not using, and gave them to me. At every other restaurant during my visit I spotted someone with fish tacos. Already assembled.
Bottom line. Disappointed. Felt unwelcome. Others seemed to enjoy their food, and mine wasn’t bad but the main thing I was served that evening was...
Read moreI had sushi which was very good, however my partner ordered a meatless impossible burger and was served a real meat patty. They were notified through their website and haven't responded. It's just kind of disappointing when the atmosphere is nice and you're paying quite a bit for your food and drinks. We should have told them when we were there but my partner was embarrassed/sick about it. We just ended up heading out. Also the girl who was hosting was TERRIBLY rude. Worst hostess I've had the displeasure of being sat by. Took her 15 minutes to come over even though she saw us, she was annoyed that I asked to see a menu beforehand, and when she did seat us she asked where we wanted to sit like we were the biggest inconvenience ever. I was going to say something to her but decided against it. Looks like I didn't have to because the next family that was sat told her never to talk to people the way she was talking to them. Glad I wasn't the only one thinking it. Our server was nice...my sushi was good...but I would never go back.
*Update: I'm regards to response from owner. I definitely don't want to say anyone's being dishonest/imply that anyone is unintelligent but I will say, this is a product we eat frequently. This burger was cold to the touch in the center, red, not pink and contained gristle in a bite or two. We really did give it a try but I'm very certain this was not an impossible burger. ): Also we were at the Welfleet location on Sunday April 14th, probably around 4pm or so. Hostess was a young woman with dark hair. I really appreciate the response, again I mean no disrespect. As for taking it off the menu...I'm not sure? I suppose if it's been problematic you could consider replacing it with a house made veggie or...
Read moreBeen coming here for years each time we visit Wellfleet. Most times the food is really quite good. Some items better than others. Of note the Lobster Gnocci is fabulous and Pasta (Clams) Vongole as well as the chowder and drinks! All really good. Service is great even though the place can be super busy. And trust me it gets very busy. The fish n chips ...not the best and wouldn't reorder again, average at best. (Go to Chatham Pier Fish Market for the best on the cape). However never order any of their Maki. It is quite possibly the worst roll(s) I have ever experienced. Flavors are bland and worse, poorly made like a child rolled them.. I had to use a spoon to eat them and let me assure you i can use chopsticks to pick up nearly anything!! I am an avid Asian foodie and I can honestly say whomever makes the Maki needs to learn how to roll for tight rice. Just shamefully bad for $14. Furthermore, while the portions of dinners are fair...the Maki was ridiculously small for $14. Again I know my Japanese and frequent restaurants all over the US...rolls at that price point should contain 8 pieces. This was 4...not cool. Maybe if they were amazing I'd say ok but ....no. I did bring this all up politely to the waitress. She actually agreed with me and said yeah that's normal here I don't like it here either. She herself expressed she doesn't like the way the rice is done here either. She actually recomended another place for good Sushi and Maki. By the way... n apply, nor mentioning it to the kitchen nor removing it from the bill was not even offered, though I clearly expressed several times how great everything else was and how genuinely unhappy we were with the rolls. So just a word of advice...stick to the...
