I had heard great things about this place from the locals we went to dinner with, but it didn’t live up to the hype. Some things weren’t their fault, some were.

This year is a particularly bad mosquito season from what the locals tell me. But having a restaurant on a marsh, that doesn’t accept reservations, and an outdoor waiting area really should make more of an effort to protect their guests. Nearly two hour wait for dinner while being the dinner for mosquitoes isn’t great.

Once seated in their enclosed tent I was pleased. For a moment. There were less mosquitoes than the patio, but the gaping holes in the screen only slowed the onslaught.

Service was slow, but I am certain the servers were dead on their feet by this time. Cocktails were great, and I would have ordered more than one of the opportunity had arisen.

I ordered fish tacos. One of the reasons I ordered tacos was because the locals I was with were commenting on how good the French fries were. And the menu indicated the tacos were served with fries. My order arrived, and it did not have fries. When I addressed this with my server, I was told they do not come with fries. However you can look at their menu online and it will give you the impression that it does. I then attempted to order a side of fries and was told the kitchen was closed. Ugh. Also the tacos were not assembled. Really they should have been called fish fajitas. They were difficult to assemble, as I had no silverware. Thankfully someone else had silverware that they were not using, and gave them to me. At every other restaurant during my visit I spotted someone with fish tacos. Already assembled.

Bottom line. Disappointed. Felt unwelcome. Others seemed to enjoy their food, and mine wasn’t bad but the main thing I was served that evening was...

I had sushi which was very good, however my partner ordered a meatless impossible burger and was served a real meat patty. They were notified through their website and haven't responded. It's just kind of disappointing when the atmosphere is nice and you're paying quite a bit for your food and drinks. We should have told them when we were there but my partner was embarrassed/sick about it. We just ended up heading out. Also the girl who was hosting was TERRIBLY rude. Worst hostess I've had the displeasure of being sat by. Took her 15 minutes to come over even though she saw us, she was annoyed that I asked to see a menu beforehand, and when she did seat us she asked where we wanted to sit like we were the biggest inconvenience ever. I was going to say something to her but decided against it. Looks like I didn't have to because the next family that was sat told her never to talk to people the way she was talking to them. Glad I wasn't the only one thinking it. Our server was nice...my sushi was good...but I would never go back.

*Update: I'm regards to response from owner. I definitely don't want to say anyone's being dishonest/imply that anyone is unintelligent but I will say, this is a product we eat frequently. This burger was cold to the touch in the center, red, not pink and contained gristle in a bite or two. We really did give it a try but I'm very certain this was not an impossible burger. ): Also we were at the Welfleet location on Sunday April 14th, probably around 4pm or so. Hostess was a young woman with dark hair. I really appreciate the response, again I mean no disrespect. As for taking it off the menu...I'm not sure? I suppose if it's been problematic you could consider replacing it with a house made veggie or...

Been coming here for years each time we visit Wellfleet. Most times the food is really quite good. Some items better than others. Of note the Lobster Gnocci is fabulous and Pasta (Clams) Vongole as well as the chowder and drinks! All really good. Service is great even though the place can be super busy. And trust me it gets very busy. The fish n chips ...not the best and wouldn't reorder again, average at best. (Go to Chatham Pier Fish Market for the best on the cape). However never order any of their Maki. It is quite possibly the worst roll(s) I have ever experienced. Flavors are bland and worse, poorly made like a child rolled them.. I had to use a spoon to eat them and let me assure you i can use chopsticks to pick up nearly anything!! I am an avid Asian foodie and I can honestly say whomever makes the Maki needs to learn how to roll for tight rice. Just shamefully bad for $14. Furthermore, while the portions of dinners are fair...the Maki was ridiculously small for $14. Again I know my Japanese and frequent restaurants all over the US...rolls at that price point should contain 8 pieces. This was 4...not cool. Maybe if they were amazing I'd say ok but ....no. I did bring this all up politely to the waitress. She actually agreed with me and said yeah that's normal here I don't like it here either. She herself expressed she doesn't like the way the rice is done here either. She actually recomended another place for good Sushi and Maki. By the way... n apply, nor mentioning it to the kitchen nor removing it from the bill was not even offered, though I clearly expressed several times how great everything else was and how genuinely unhappy we were with the rolls. So just a word of advice...stick to the...

Wellfleet is an adorable little seaside town on Cape Cod with boutiques and places to buy expensive junk. But on Labor Day weekend, the crowds descend upon it to eat the namesake oysters caught in local waters by the pier, waiting an hour plus getting into the 2 or 3 major restaurants there with lines out the door. “F that,” is my reply. After visiting the local businesses and learning of the indeterminate wait times, we turned tail and, on the way out of town, hit Mac’s, a local seafood chain’s Wellfleet location, which has all the typical New England seafood items you expect (and the oysters of course) but also sushi made with local fish and lots of other specialties. Effectively, the raw stuff is what they specialize in. We got a dozen local oysters, which were clean tasting and delicious, excellent specimens but very salty compared to our warm water oysters and not as funky. I liked them, but I'm not sure as much as I do others from, say, the Pacific Northwest or even our Gulf ones, which are bigger and juicer — they are the best raw. Rachel got an oyster Bao; the oysters fry up smaller, saltier and not as juicy as the warm water ones — I prefer the clams up here. We tried the scallop spicy hand rolls, which were delicious, but it was made of chopped-up local bay scallops and thus were a bit runny, I think they would have been better presented as gunkan-maki (oval), but that’s nitpicky. I also got a “big kahuna” sushi presentation which had local tuna prepared 3 ways (poke, roll, filled with spicy tuna, chopped onion and granny smith apple), Rachel also got a Bahamian-style fish stew that was very peppery. Very enjoyable and sane lunch.

This restaurant is amazing! Got here at 7:30 on a Saturday night and was quoted an hour and a half to an hour forty-five for a table for two. We were waiting in line to get a drink from the bar maybe a half hour to forty minutes into the wait when we were found by the hostess and sat at the sushi bar. Our waitress, Jodie was an absolute delight. You could tell she enjoyed her job and it showed in her service and responsiveness. Friendly and funny, and seriously a delight. On top of the very good food, she's what made the night memorable. On the food, we had the shishito peppers to start, with the chickpea burger with a side of garlic fries and the seared scallops as mains. Both were excellent, flavorful, and great portions. Pardon the photos of food half-eaten, we were so eager to start I forgot to take a photo at first! All in all, this restaurant is a total catch and would have been well worth the wait, even had we been made to wait the full length we were quoted. Highly recommend this spot for dinner, I'll definitely be back!

Awesomely chic yet down to earth Cape Cod restaurant located in Wellfleet. Love the atmosphere and of course most importantly the food. Mac's does not take reservations, so I suppose if you have a large party it could potentially take time to get a table. But there is a cocktail and raw bar outside that you can enjoy while you wait. There is also an outdoor dining area which I always try to be seated in depending on the wait time. As for the food, I have never been disappointed, each visit has always been on point! The Wellfleet oysters are simply the best in the world and they are literally caught/harvested right down the street. Mac's is a great choice whether you are looking for oysters, clams, sushi & cocktails or a full blown dinner. Mac's has other locations on the Cape as well including Provincetown. I will put those on must try list for my next Cape visit.
