This is a once-awesome restaurant that has gone seriously down with their atmosphere and service. I love the food, though, so the two stars are appropriate. The atmosphere is like being in an old gym or Boy's Club, with cinder-block walls and sketchy bathrooms. In the bathrooms, there are bottles of exposed chemicals/cleaners, which are dangerous and should be put into a non-customer area.
The walls have pop-art type paintings on them that are signature Blue Onion, as they have sold those for years, dating back to when they were at a strip mall. The tables/booths are truly in need of a good cleaning or perhaps replacement. The booth in which we sat smelled like an old vinyl chair, so just a little TLC could make a difference. The outside is also very dismal, and the onion sign is hard to see; it should be easy to see, like a big blue neon onion that invites people to have the great food there....
I loved their old location, even though it was probably too small for their needs. It had more ambience, and seemed warmer somehow.
The service wasn't horrible, but our server was absolutely bare-bones in her methods. She didn't try to read us or figure out if we wanted to hurry or take our time (she defaulted to hurrying); she also spoke really loudly, and didn't exchange any pleasantries at all. She was just all about taking our order, delivering it, and then dropping off the check.
The food is always excellent - the pita bread and dips, esp. Roasted Garlic and the Goat Cheese ones are awesome. The pizzas are great, easy to eat, not too thick. The pitas are similarly great and filling for sure. The chili is Terlingua style, my husband enjoyed it. It's a little brothier and has chunks of steaky beef vs. ground burger. (It's avail. on Saturdays).
Suggestion: consider picking up /doing take-away. Maybe the McAllen location is...
Read moreSo, my family and I went to dinner at the Blue Onion. We have been there plenty of times and all had been great up until tonight. We got there and were told to have a seat anywhere; we did. We sat, and sat, and sat. Finally our waiter shows up, no apologies, and asks for our drinks. I have a beer, my daughter, a lemonade and my wife, a water. We wait, and wait, and wait. Our drinks finally show up. The lemonade tasted like water and my beer glass was dirty. Our waiter leaves and never comes back. Finally we get to order and again no apology. Waiter leaves and after about 20 minutes the food arrives. My daughter and I had a pizza and my wife some shrimp Colorado thing. Pizzas were good but my wife’s food was horrible. The waiter never comes back to check up on us. At the end of our meal, he finally showed up and asks if we needed anything. My wife told him that her meal was nasty. The shrimp were way over cooked and tasted funky. The waiter didn’t say anything and left. We both looked at each other, like “wow”. He finally came back with our ticket. We paid and left. Oh, there was a couple sitting a few tables from us and they were plastered. One of the waitresses kept on bringing them booze. Not good for business. I’ll give them three stars because the business is normally very good and the staff of pretty attentive, but not tonight. Very...
Read moreWow what a great place to have dinner. The blue onion is definitely worth the drive. I came here purposely to have the pizza and was surprised at the quality of food and service at the blue onion. I had the beef and chicken fajita pizzas with glue onions and cilantro. I must say the included tips of guacamole and housemaid habanero salsa was amazing you don't want to miss this dining opportunity. Great location located right on the corner with ample parking around the building. I found this restaurant was clean including the restrooms. I was greeted with a friendly smile conceited immediately. Extensive drink selection and great menu here. Admiring the great art on the wall throughout the building I was relaxed in this welcoming atmosphere here. I noticed the owner and staff take great pride in making sure people are happy with service and their food. I must say the food was definitely created with the best ingredients hot and fresh. The creativity and passion is apparent at the blue onion. I must give a huge thank you to all the staff and the owner at the blue onion for making this a five-star dining experience. I would highly recommend you bring your...
