I’ve been coming to HH since they opened. At first it was great, a tap room and sandwich bar paired together. The service was fast, the sandwiches delicious and the beer cold. Since the face lift, the quality, service and overall vibe of HH is very much terrible. The bartender asked me if I wanted my change after ordering a beer and a sandwich which came out to 17$ roughly. Normally you give the customer his change and they can tip you. Instead I was asked awkwardly if I wanted my change which they kinda force you to tip them for when they haven’t even provided service. I ordered at the bar and my sandwich came to me in a bag while other patrons who were sitting got a tray and liner. I’m old school I don’t mind deli paper and bag, but why do I gotta look like an acehole, at the bar with my deli spread and joe and susan have tray with liners like they are eating downtown. Again this falls on the service and poor attention to detail. The Bar service is beyond lack luster. If you got a 10’ bar walk to the whole bar. Don’t just stand in one place talking to same 3 customers. (This really bothered me, while I’m manging this dry ass bread sandwich my beer goes low and dry and I can’t even get service for another one. Because bar tender wants to get drawn on by another customer with sharpie. This place has taken a nose dive for the worst. Don’t come here unless you want to be frustrated by poor service. Maybe they need to down size and go back to quality control, I recommend any other sandwich shop in the...
Read moreThere is good service, there is great service and then there is OUTSTANDING SERVICE. Humboldt Haus deserves all the stars and then some. I placed a large order via UberEats yesterday, and the driver only picked up 1 of 2 bags. I immediately called the store and confirmed the other half of my order was on their counter, but I would be out for the afternoon and the driver was unreachable having "completed" the delivery. After multiple text exchanges (likely with a bot) and photos, UE determined that an adjustment could not be made.
When I called the store and spoked with Colleen, she apologized profusely (a note had been left regarding the incident) and she offered store credit for the missing order. Then she called back 20 minutes later, asking if I would be home, because the in house driver would bring a replacement in about an hour. Not only did they replace my order, but threw in two slices of cheesecake (there's a special place in heaven for women who gift women on the 2nd day of their cycle cheesecake)
I offered to tip the driver but he wouldn't accept a dime, only asked for a good review.
I was already addicted to their subs (the West Sider is surprisingly refreshing for a sub, almost like a salad, and the Italian is a Chicago classic- get it with giardinera) and the Toasts (Greek & Lovely) are a little luxury. This is downtown quality from a neighborhood joint. Wish I lived a little closer. Treat...
Read moreWe went for a quick bite after reading some reviews. One other person was there eating, so we (three adults and two kids) sat down to place an order. Asking for info about the sandwiches seemed to be a mistake as the lady attending us seemed bothered being asked. On top of it, when I asked if they had any type of juice for our kids, she lost it explaining they have beer and water only. Skip to our order; 4 large sandwiches and couple beverages (water for kids) = $60. So, for $10 sandwiches you'd expect decent amount of dressing/mayo/etc. The spread on mine was so light that I asked for extra, she acknowledged but never brought it. I go to the counter, it seemed like they were unhappy I asked for some extra spread...wth!? My draft beer was flat, so that is an immediate one star loss. Service was mediocre, I mean for $10+ a sandwich you'd think they would be a little bit more considerate. Sandwiches were good, but nothing to write home about; except for the bad reception. Maybe we caught them in an off day, not sure but we are definitely never returning. Way too many more options in Chicago to deal...
