I hate leaving negative feedback especially for a newly opened chocolate specialty Cafe.
The only reason I'm writing ✍ this review is the fact that I absolutely am a chocoholic and I thoroughly had high expectations of this beautiful boutique chocolate centered Cafe. However I haven't been able to sleep all night and I'm extremely upset that I didn't enjoy my beauty rest due to the fact that I sampled a pure 78% dark chocolate cacao steeped in water at 7pm yesterday and my sleep cycle was impacted even though my body is exhausted.
The drink itself tasted bitter and watery and the price of the drinking chocolate was pretty high but I'm not into such bitter tasting chocolate and this will absolutely be the last time I try any chocolate with such an incredibly large amount of dark chocolate without a heavy cream to accompany it.
I've been to Paris, France 🇫🇷 before and had the opportunity to try good drinking chocolate that tasted very similar to Ganache and felt like you were drinking a chocolate bar. The chocolate in Paris was accompanied by a serving of heavy cream so it tasted like dessert.
I just did a Google search this evening and found out that dark chocolate contains high amounts of caffeine 😳 and this is why I couldn't sleep properly and feel ill. The drink itself acted like a diuretic on my sensitive system and I was up and down all night and early morning taking multiple trips to the bathroom in my apartment.
Dark chocolate contains caffeine, a stimulant which interferes with your sleep cycles. I was so sensitive to the high levels of caffeine in this particular drinking chocolate that I've been suffering with severe insomnia all night.
This in itself propelled me to write this review because I do value my sleep and I'm not used to drinking chocolate that is filled with so much caffeine. It feels like I've had shots of expresso not a relaxing cup of hot cocoa before bed.
There are chocolate bonbons here too but I didn't select any because each bonbon is $4 a piece and that's absolutely not within my budget.
There are lots of dark chocolate bars and boxes of artisansal chocolate bonbons for gifting but the prices are not reasonable for my needs. However if you personally love the taste of dark chocolate 🍫 this might be the perfect place for you! Remember reviews are subjective and my opinions are mine alone based on my body's sensitivity to dark chocolate and high caffeine.
In summary this chocolate boutique is lovely but the drinking chocolate is just not to my liking and when I helped myself to a serving of water the beverage was salty and carbonated so it was just not the kind of water that quenched my thirst. Honestly I really don't feel well. I like feeling happy after a cup of chocolate and instead I'm sleepless.
The barrista Dakota was charming and amusing but I was given a large quantity of drinking chocolate in a paper cup towards closing. Perhaps this type of chocolate should be served at a sacred cacao ceremony in extremely small doses but not in a huge cup like it was served here.
This just isn't for me. I hope whoever loves dark chocolate without dairy finds what they need here but I really didn't enjoy the taste and I don't like having insomnia all night. Best wishes of success 🙌 to the owner. To my fellow people who get sick from dark chocolate or who are sensitive to caffeine you have my...
Read moreI proudly work from coffee shops since I need a WFH break. Today I went to finish my work day at ORO. First time there and I had to hop on a work call before I ordered. I said I would buy something in a bit and the barista was visibly annoyed. I went to the bathroom before my work call. Then set up my computer and got on the call. The barista came up to me ten minutes later and asked if I needed something. I was on my work call and said I would order something after my call. The barista then rolled his eyes at me as he walked away. I asked "did you roll your eyes?" and kept talking under his breathe as he walked away. I have never been felt like I had to order before I sit down and bullied by staff for not ordering when they wanted me to. I spoke to the manager and he could have cared less because I "was not a paying customer." Coffee shops are a third place for me and I will always order from a coffee shop. I am proud to at least three times a week support local coffee shops in Bucktown and Wicker Park. Unfortunately, ORO will not be on this list. The interior did look incredible, not many people where in the space around 1pm on a Thursday but maybe I know why. Worst part is I left my water bottle I love in their bathroom and do not feel safe enough to return to ORO and retrieve it. I hope someone gets back to me because this is not how you treat people. I am a hard working person who gives back his local businesses. I suggest Red June and Thrd. in Bucktown and La Colombe in Wicker Park. Thank you to these staffs for being kind and supporting this wfh guy trying his best to succeed in this world. I hope we are all able to be more kind and understand each other during hard times. I wish the staff...
Read moreI was blown away by the quality of the service, atmosphere and product served. Their drinks are served with nice tableware, trays and side glass for water. There is also a self-serve tap for sparkling, which is nice. There is variety of bar seating, bench seating and soft seating. The lighting is cozy with this really elegant lighting. I really appreciated the cleanliness and polished presentation the entire place has. They make a ton of their product in house, you can see a large open kitchen behind glass right as you enter, and they also roast their coffee in house as well. I ordered a cocao shot and and espresso. The first was which was a not-too-sweet champurrado-like thick chocolate drink. Their espresso was one of the best I've ever had. It's not for everyone as it's a very bright, flavorful, fresh and pungent citrusy espresso that clearly exhibits its single origin characteristics. If you're looking for a muted old coffee that is dark roasted to an indistinct profile to cover up with milk and sugar, you won't find that here. The staff here were clearly engaged, knowledgeable and enthusiastic for delivering a great experience and the products they serve.
Lastly, LOTS of cafes charge more, upwards of $5-8 for an espresso drink with with trendy add-ons, garnishes and twists. I have no idea how Oro Cafe manages to offer such a stylish, comfortable atmosphere, better ethically sourced products, freshly made in-house (labor, labor, labor) menu items that all while being on par or cheaper than the...
