Skylark — Restaurant in West Chicago Township

This bar is the epitome of a hot & cold toxic relationship. The door man was one of the friendliest people I've ever encountered, a welcoming presence who offered up his favorites on the food menu. The rest of the staff could learn a thing or two from him. I wasn't expecting the greatest hospitality of all time from a cash only beer bar known for its urinals, so it was no surprise when the bartenders couldn't be bothered to move 10 steps from the center of the bar to take a drink order, or when they acted like it was common knowledge that food orders can only be placed with a server while sitting at a table.

Things really took a turn when we followed instruction and sat at a table, trying at least 10-12 times to flag down the supposed server, who would make eye contact from a distance, then proceed to walk right past us to wait on every other table besides ours. This was when I discovered that the urinals not only had incredible physical stability, having endured for 100+years, but that they also possessed more emotional stability than our server. I've never experienced such horrible service in my entire life. We've all dealt with understaffed restaurants and first time servers, but never have I been intentionally ignored by a server on a power trip with behavioral issues, it almost felt like a bit. Read some other reviews about the difference in treatment for regulars vs non-regulars, which certainly factored in.

The art on the walls and the bouncer were cool enough to give this spot 2 stars, but don't expect your server to have more personality than a doorknob, that's asking...

Really wanted to like this place, was recommended to me with high accolades. The ambience is nice, appreciated their decor. Bartender seemed kind. I was asked for four ID's upon ordering four drinks at the bar with just one other friend, standing behind me. That seemed like odd practice. I walked in with a group of four, sure, but, they had no idea whether my friend and I were dual-weilding drinks. Did they assume we were trying to buy drinks for kids? I'm guessing they were short-staffed? And didn't have a doorman? But that wouldn't excuse being ignored by the server for 45 minutes. I'm being generous with the three stars. I would want to say 2.5. They have very decent prices. And an adequate selection. Pretty sure we were the only Mexicans at the bar that night. Makes it hard to think "our kind" isn't welcome there with how the...

App- potato and cheese pierogies Steph: fried dumpling amazingness, especially after coming from a brewery tour. The sour cream + applesauce pairing was way better and than I expected. Zach: App was pretty tasty. First time having pierogies.

Entrees: Vegan sloppy joes - oh my gawd I wish I hadn't been so full when I started eating this. Amazing. So good. I haven't had a vegan sloppy Joe in all 8 years of being a vegetarian and would recommend and would also eat again.

Skylark burger- burger with onion rings, cheddar - very delicious

Final thoughts: steph- far away, but would come back because they have awesomeee vegetarian + fish options, cheap. But cash only. Zach -Would recommend, small-ish menu but very tasty
