Overall the experience was just okay. We had high hopes based on the reviews but were sadly disappointed that we had spent a Restaurant Week pick on this place when we really could have gone any old night. We visited for restaurant week because with 4.8 stars, I assume even if it is pub food, they must be smashing it.
The atmosphere is a typical pub environment, noise level is on the high side but tolerable. The server was polite enough, if not particularly proactive, and we were happy to find two choices for NA beers. More would have been great, there are so many good ones now (and it is dry January) but two is not bad.
The menu looked slightly more interesting than average pub food but very few vegetarian or healthy options. Items like fried brie instead of the typical fried cheese curds and togarashi chicken instead of wings (turns out they were out of the togarashi so we ended up with standard ranch and buffalo sauce on chicken tenders instead, meh).
The salads were just okay, reminiscent of an old school pizza parlor, not the modern complex and multidimensional salads that are found on lots of menus today.
Two of the items on the Restaurant Week menu that we ordered they were out of, which would have been fine if the server told us at the time of ordering, or shortly after, however we were not informed until well past time that they should have already arrived. The only vegetarian entree item on the menu, which I ordered, we waited an hour to receive before we were told it was unavailable. I ordered the mahi mahi instead which was overcooked and desperately wanted a sauce to liven it up.
The saving grace was the amazing potatoes and the French Dip sandwich. The potatoes were perfectly cooked, piping hot, and delightfully crusty with flaky salt. The beef in the sandwich was melt-in-your mouth tender and the au jus was flavorful. The apple tart dessert was also delightful.
I would call this a fine neighborhood pub but not really 4.8 stars on any metric outside of beef...
Read moreA great Irish bar in the Avondale neighborhood! The food is top flight and the drinks are fantastic. Wonderful spot to drop in for brunch or a hearty lunch/dinner. If you are looking for a proper pour of Guinness, look no further.
The full Irish breakfast is my go to. They spare no expense. Black and white pudding, rashers, sausages, homemade baked beans (much better than Heinz) and everything else. The portions are HUGE.
My wife and I have recently been stopping in for the traditional Irish music sessions on Thursdays. Generally, a great group of musicians stop in and play some wonderful toe taping tunes. This is a drop in musical session, so there are no guarantees who and how many musicals will be there. But nothing goes with a Guinness like a good Irish music session. Even the owner drops in to play a few tunes!
Brendon, the owner, is a wonderful guy. He cares a lot about his establishment and workers. Every time we've gone he's been an active participant in all the tasks. I've seen him serving food and drinks, bussing tables and hauling food from trucks. You can tell her really loves his business and his customers.
Both my wife and I are born and raised in Avondale/Logan Square. We never thought we'd have a proper Irish bar in our neck of the woods. We are so pleased to have a business like the Wolfhound in the Avondale/Logan Square area. Keep up the good work...
Read moreCute neighborhood bar with a classier side. Nice to see regulars walk in as well as families couples and even single people coming for dinner themselves at the bar. Weather was nice so the large window was open and they had fan running. Very nice wait staff.
Here are my observations..good and the not so good.
Good: welcoming and nicely decorated place was a big step up from just a bar. Food menu had some nicer items you might not expect to see at a bar like this. Clean place. Nice staff. Cheeseburger was really good. Pizza was great as well.
The "meh": First 2 beers my husband asked for they didn't have. Waitress tried to offer alternatives, but he didnt like the substitute. Then he was offered a taste of a different one which was a nice gesture. In the end however, the waitress charged us for a beer they didn't have that he ordered at first, which was more expensive than the actual beer he was given. It was brought to her attention and fixed.
I felt that the chicken fingers were over cooked (deep fried in to hot of oil) and same with our fries. Burger was a little bit on the smaller side for having 2 patties, but still was really good!
Parking is kind of hard, not a big deal, but should be mentioned.
Overall a nice experience, would probably come back and try something else...
