Been coming here many many years, since my kids were toddlers. They are 12 & 13 now, and love the food, especially the soup w/ the tiny noodles & their infamous black salsa they serve with our meals. So basically, I go there for my kids. My take on the food is so-so, just average if I’m super hungry like I was today. I’ve definitely had better Mexican food in my day tbh. Never had an experience to prompt a review though until today. I spent over $60 on lunch for the three of us, and of course the kiddos didn’t finish their food. I asked for the check and a to-go container, as I’ve always done in the past. On my bill, I noticed a $2 Misc charge. When I asked the waitress what that charge was for, she told me that it was for the to-go box, said the mgr told her to add it on. Not once was this mentioned prior to her bringing the box, nor has this charge ever appeared on my bill before. What kind of food establishment charges customers for to-go containers, especially adding it in as a hidden miscellaneous charge? If it was the start of a new policy, a little heads up or explanation would’ve been nice. But adding it to my bill hoping I wouldn’t notice is not right. I asked if this also applies to carry out and delivery orders as well, since those would definitely require to-go containers, multiple even. Of course, no real answer, just an awkward smile and shoulder shrug. This small gesture of theirs really left a bad taste in my mouth. Not sure if I want to to spend my $$ on this place again. FYI TO anyone who is looking to dine in here, don’t forget to bring your own Tupperware...

You want very good ,real steak tacos ,burritos and an assortment of Authentic? THIS IS THE PLACE!! OH and they're known for and you won't get this anywhere in the city... the Black Sauce!!!!! Mild garlicy and dam good! Anything of the menu here is good! , their Barbacoa it's the best I've had anywhere because they cook it correctly- you won't get lots of fatty meat from this Barbacoa here, they trim it and slow cook it- highly recommend it ! But I love their steak here. What's the difference? They cook all their steak on a grill, not a flat top grill but grill grates so the tacos or whatever you may order are not greasy, HUGE DIFFERENCE! GAME CHANGER!! Service ,Food and ambience is great here, lots of tables , you don't feel cramped/ crowded . They open the accordian style windows( floor to ceiling) when the weather is great out so it feels awesome! If you dine in they give you complimentry chips and salsa( your typical greens and red salsa but the black one is addictive ( and sooo good), and also a small complimentry cup of soup( look like lipton but way better). I love this place and is my go to when someone asks where can I get good tacos....oh and they are open late and serve alcohol too... you must try one of there Margaritas. I promise you'll love the food and drinks here...

Side note-- try the Jamaica , thank me later...soooo good

& try the chile rellenos taco 🌮... so freaking good!!

Updated--- Febrero 2025, very cold night so I went for the " Caldo de Res" Beef soup, warmth for the soul and must have on a cold Chicagoi night.. ** see...

Step into Traspasada Restaurant, a hidden gem tucked away in the Avondale neighborhood, and discover a haven where every meal transforms into a jubilant celebration. The ambiance is an irresistible blend of cozy comfort and vibrant energy, setting the stage for an unforgettable dining experience creating the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable dining experience. I couldn't resist answering the tempting call of their luscious Jamaica, a velvety elixir that orchestrates a delightful harmony of spices, teasing the palate for the flavors yet to unfold. The true stars of this culinary show? The tacos. Both the asada and cabeza varieties were an explosion of flavor! These four tacos, juicy and bursting with tantalizing tastes, proved to be a culinary masterpiece. The asada was a delightful balance of tenderness and with its tender balance and kissed-by-flames char, while the cabeza offered a luxurious, melt-in-your-mouth journey. Freshly made tortillas cradled these savory delights, making each bite a comforting experience of savory goodness! Traspasada isn't just a restaurant; it's an odyssey, a destination inviting both locals and wanderers. For anyone seeking genuine, mouth watering Mexican cuisine within an embrace of welcoming and vibrant vibes, it's an experience worth savoring. And count me in for a return trip. It's...

All tacos are definitely not created equal!!! This is an authentic taco spot so please for the love of everything get the tacos on a corn shell with cilantro & onions like a real foodie. Ok, this place has 20+ really good taco options, including weird ones like octopus. I'm a steak taco guy, so I had 5 different kinds of steak tacos, 3 different chicken kinds, the al pastor is delicious, and even the tilapia tacos are awesome. What makes this local chain amazing(there's one on Ashland & Western) is they have 3 :-O different taco sauces instead of the usual spicy red & mild green. And that black sauce is banginnggg. The aftertaste of light jalepeño & garlic is unforgettable. Last thing, lately my favorite snack is a small chicken quesadilla because it's always super fresh chicken. If you love real Mexican food & especially tacos this is the place to be.
