Read moreI was attempting to give my business to the West Loop Velvet Taco on 3/15/25 around 10pm. I understand this is a busy day for Chicago food businesses, but as someone who has patronized Velvet Taco since 2015, I had no expectations on what I was about to encounter. The main entrance to the restaurant was closed and all the patrons were told to enter from the other door, which was not an issue, but the main problem arose from the security guard, who was clearly on a power trip. I was with my friends and was simply trying to order some tacos as I have been for the past decade, but as soon as I entered, the security guard greeted me with absolute disrespect and hostility, and even put his hands on me. I was shocked in the moment and decided I no longer wanted to support the business with my money, but stayed along since my friends were still looking to order. Even though I made it clear that I was not looking to place an order and was only there, at that point, to wait for my friends receiving their order, I was still met with the same hostility from this security guard who was clearly on a power trip. If you cannot handle the volume with respectable and streamlined operations on a day like St Patty’s Day in Chicago, then simply close! But you cannot treat your customers like this. If I ever encounter a similar type of horrendous experience that violates my rights and experiences as a law-abiding, fully paying customer, I will file a lawsuit against Velvet Taco to the fullest extent possible. In this moment, to avoid any legal action against the “security guard” that was present and that treated a long-term customer with such disdain and physicality, I expect, at the minimum, a $100 credit for any and all Velvet Tacos across the U.S., and internationally, if applicable. I also first tried leaving this review directly through their app, but was unable to do so, further illustrating their ignorance on the customers that have downloaded their app and built...
Read moreVelvet Taco in Chicago has completely redefined what I expect from a taco joint. This isn't your typical taqueria—it's an experience that has me planning my flight connections through O'Hare just to get my fix.
I've literally driven straight from the airport during a brief layover just to indulge in these mouthwatering creations. That's right—I risked missing my connecting flight for these tacos, and I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
Every single taco I've tried has been nothing short of extraordinary. The flavor combinations are both innovative and perfectly balanced. Their spicy tikka chicken taco brings together Indian and Mexican flavors in a way that shouldn't work but absolutely sings. The slow-roasted angus brisket taco with its perfect smokiness and tender texture is practically life-changing. And don't get me started on their fish tacos—crispy, fresh, and topped with just the right amount of creamy sauce.
The corn tortillas taste freshly made, and the ingredients are clearly sourced with care. What impresses me most is the attention to detail—each garnish, each sauce, each element feels deliberately chosen to create the perfect bite. Nothing is an afterthought here.
The atmosphere matches the quality of the food—vibrant, energetic, and contemporary without feeling pretentious. The staff are genuinely passionate about what they're serving and happy to make recommendations if you're overwhelmed by choices (which you will be).
Chicago has no shortage of incredible food options, but Velvet Taco stands in a category of its own. It's become my non-negotiable Chicago stop, even if I'm just passing through. If you have to choose just one taco spot in the Windy City, make it Velvet Taco. Just make sure you have enough time before your next flight—because you'll want to try everything on the menu.
A culinary highlight that's worth traveling across the...
