First let me get this out of the way, I was totally fan-boying over the menu! Nearly every burger is named after a Metal band, singer or song. Behemoth, COC (Corrosion of Conformity), King Diamond, Goblin, Nevermore, Clutch, Pig Destroyer, Lemmy (Singer for Motörhead), The Trooper (one of the greatest Iron Maiden songs ever), Byzantine (stole my drummer, Matt, in the early ‘00’s to replace their drum machine, LOL), and more! It was obvious to me that this guy knows his music. The only thing missing is a fish sandwich named “Manowar”, a pumpkin cheesecake named “Helloween” and a brisket burger named “Cattle Decapitation”! Give me a shout, I’ll sell you the best smoked brisket in the state!
Enough of the Metal Menu history lesson, let’s get to the food.
Appetizers… we ordered the sampler and chose pickle fries, fried green tomatoes and cheese curds. Everything was AMAZING. The dipping sauces were placed together on the side of the tray, so without having the menu in front of us, it was a little confusing knowing which sauce to pair with each side. It didn’t matter, the sauces were amazing. The sides we chose were fried but they were fried to perfection, not a drop of residual oil on the tray, it was fried food perfection.
The burgers…
I ordered the “Bite The Pain” burger. It was cooked to a PERFECT medium, as requested. The sear was on point, a perfect char with a delicate crunch on the bite through the exterior. The burger is advertised as being topped with “Death Sauce, jalapeños, pickles, frizzled onions, and pepper jack cheese” followed by “YES! It’s HOT!!”. I’d drop a couple exclamation points from that statement. If someone is ordering a HOT sauced burger they are expecting heat that delivers the sweats. If you have a palate for heat, this will disappoint. The sauce is NOT hot, and the jalapeños were barely detectable, the pickles def came through more than the peppers. This is a recurring regional problem in WV, restaurants promote a “hot” sauce that is barely hotter than Tabasco. The sauce has no heat on the front or back end, and is very vinegar forward. Personally, I wouldn’t put a sauce this vinegary on beef, perhaps pork, but better suited for chicken and waffles. Other than the miss on the heat and the vinegar aftertaste on the backend, this is the best burger I’ve had in WV, and probably one of the best I’ve ever had outside of my patio, with Matt the Millers, Rusty Bucket or Thurman’s (all in Columbus, OH) tied for a close second. The fries were effing amazing! I’ve never had fries this good, anywhere, ever! I knew Chuck Schuldiner in the 90’s, he was a vegetarian so I’m really hoping the “Death Sauce” on the burger isn’t named after his band “Death”, he’ll be rolling in his grave!
My wife ordered the Horse Burner. She loved the burger, but was a little disappointed there wasn’t more horseradish sauce, she said it was barely detectable. The beer battered onion rings were out of this world, again, some of the best we’ve ever had, and not a drop of oil on the tray!
Our daughter ordered the Astro. She absolutely destroyed it! Again with the sauce, she had to ask for some bbq sauce on the side, there was barely enough on the burger to taste. The cut on the sweet potato fries was not as good as the regular fries, the sweet potatoes were cut VERY THICK, which requires longer cooking to achieve a thoroughly fried fry. If you guys could manage to cut these the same size as the regular fry, that would be an improvement. They were good, but not as good as the regular potato French fry, and we LOVE sweet potato fries!
I wanted to order the Behemoth SO BADLY but I couldn’t eat a pound of burger for lunch before walking around the mall, maybe next time, and there WILL be a next time!
You cannot go wrong here. The protein should be the star of any sandwich, but I would ask the cooks to be a little more generous with the sauce on the burgers, and maybe not advertise the “hot” sauces as HOT, that’s it! Oscar’s makes the best burgers around, and it’s worth the 45 minute drive from Chucktown....
Read moreUpdate from 05 Mar 2023 We were back again today since it was my friend birthday.
It was mostly a passive experience but there always seems to be something that doesn't go well.
The food was great, the drinks were great, the service was even great. So... What could go wrong?
Well we had a gift card. However we found out that they switched companies & it gift card was no longer acceptance. The girl did try several ways to enter it before going to the back to get help. She returned to tell us they no longer honor the cards with the Square logo.
I will repeat that the food has always been great it's just everything else they never seen to be able to get right.
This could be a 5 star experience with a little more conversation on the customer but I can make great food also. I go out for the experience which is what this place seems to always fall short on.
I would have liked to give them a 5 star this time but I'm doing the 4 star to a 3. Don't cheat your customer! This is probably my friends favorite place to eat so we go pretty often. The food is still very good.
My only complaint is that we sat for a long time before we was finally waited on. There was a group of waitresses at the bar standing and talking. I told my friend if one of those was our server and Google asked me that they was going to get a bad review. Well sure enough she was. One of the other girls told her we was waiting. However once we was served the first time she was great. So all in all I don't know how to rate them.
I'm going to ding them one star for the really long wait when we first got there but I do think they mostly...
Read moreLet me say that this is not my first, second, or third trip to Oscar’s. It’s rapidly becoming one of my favorite places to eat in the state…plus my four year old frequently requests “The Puppy Restaurant,” (see their logo) because “their pancakes are so yummy!”
I got the Behemoth Burger with sweet potato fries, my fiancée got the California Club Salad, and we split the Pretzel Bites. All were excellently prepared and delicious. I’ve become hard-pressed to get anything but the Behemoth because it is just so good - but the burger is juicy and the sauce is plentiful so you may want extra napkins! Based on previous trips, I can also recommend the Cajun BBQ Sweet Potato Boat, Chicken and Waffles (5 stars from the fiancée), Biscuits and Gravy (huge!), and the Sasquatch. I am not a beer guy, but they had what seemed to me to be a huge selection.
We waited less than a minute to be seated, everything was clean, and this time we got to try their patio seating. The heaters cut through the morning crisp without being overpowering and it was a great setting.
I’m embarrassed to admit that I can’t remember our server’s name, but she was delightful. She said she was married to the GM/Menu Creator and she had a necklace that said Lukas – and there’s a Lukas burger on the kid’s menu so the story checks out, lol. She was wonderfully attentive (my drink never went dry) but never seemed to hover. I can’t recall ever having poor service there over my...
