Went there with friends for dinner. It's close to the campus and is probably the only Chinese restaurant around here except the ones on Nassau. Very convenient in terms of the location. But the food quality is really low and the owner is very rude. AVOID IT AT ALL COSTS!!!
We ordered the dish lamb with onions among other things. The lamb turned out to be bad already. It tastes like some meat you bought for Thanksgiving, left it in the fridge but forgot it, and heat it again using microwave the following Labor Day without realizing it's been there for almost a year. The lamb served to us is quite stinky and looks like frozen duck breast covered by hard dog poo. Yes, you read it right. In fact, we doubted whether it's lamb or not at first. So we asked the restaurant owner if the cook used the wrong meat.
Here is what the owner says, literally: it's indeed lamb, but you know, here in the US, most of the lamb meat is imported. So when it arrives, it's usually been almost a year. It's very reasonable that most of the lamb meat is 'not that fresh'. Every other customer eats it this way.
Well, okay, I'm starting to wonder if I actually live in the same country as this business owner. Because based on my experience in the United States, every honest and decent American restaurant owner will only serve FRESH food to his customer. If the food is already been frozen for 'almost a year', is 'not that fresh', and you know it already, then perhaps you shouldn't serve it to your customers!
I'm a lamb meat lover and I've ordered it in many many restaurants in the US, east coast and west coast, LA and NY, Chinese style and Mediterranean style. But I never found any restaurant that serves bad meat before, and I always assumed that it's part of what we call professionalism for restaurants. This place has entirely changed my worldview.
Will never go to this place again.
PS: To fellow Princeton students, go eat on Nassau, avoid this place at all costs.
To fellow Chinese food lovers, drive to New Brunswick, Edison or even Philadelphia. Do not eat here. It's simply not worth it for...
Read moreDuring a recent dining experience at Shanghai Bun, we had the opportunity to try a variety of dishes. While our expectations were high, the overall experience left us with mixed feelings. While the food was decent, we couldn't help but feel that we have had better meals from them in the past.
The selection of dishes we ordered was extensive, encompassing various flavors and textures. However, despite the diverse array of options, we found the overall execution to be average. The flavors lacked the distinct punch and authenticity that we had come to expect from Shanghai Bun. While some dishes were satisfactory, they failed to leave a lasting impression.
One area where Shanghai Bun fell short was consistency. While we have had exceptional meals at this establishment in the past, this particular visit did not live up to our previous experiences. It left us longing for the exceptional flavors and culinary craftsmanship that we had come to associate with Shanghai Bun.
Despite the disappointing food experience, it's important to note that the service at Shanghai Bun was friendly and attentive. The staff members were courteous and promptly attended to our needs. However, we feel that the overall dining experience relies heavily on the quality of the dishes served.
The ambiance of the restaurant was pleasant, offering a cozy and inviting atmosphere. The traditional decor and comfortable seating created a suitable setting for a relaxed meal. The noise level was moderate, allowing for conversation without overpowering background noise.
In conclusion, our recent dining experience at Shanghai Bun was average, leaving us with mixed feelings. While the service was commendable and the ambiance enjoyable, the food fell short of our expectations. We have previously had better meals from Shanghai Bun, which leads us to believe that this visit may have been an exception rather than the norm. We hope to see improvement in the future, as we know the potential for exceptional flavors exists within Shanghai...
Read moreLoved the staff, loved the atmosphere, loved the food. Definitely recommend this place if you’re in the area even though it’s in a super unassuming shopping plaza. Cozy Chinese restaurant with great options and a traditional vibe. Had the pork soup dumplings and these were super good. The pork was a little red and the dumplings stuck to my chopsticks but the taste was exceptional. Their wonton soup is one of my favorites. The wontons are Cantonese style with shrimp and pork inside and the broth is both simple and tasty. My other favorite was the shredded pork with fried tofu. I’ve gotten this at other places but this dish was unexpectedly spicy and I loved it. We also got the spicy beef noodle soup which was good but I kind of wish I got the non-spicy one. I love spicy food but it seemed like they made the broth and just added chili oil after the fact. Regardless, the noodles were good and the beef was very tender. Lastly, we got the rice cakes with shrimp. Now I love rice cakes and not many places that I’ve been to, sell this dish. They give big shrimp and the rice cakes are nice and chewy. Without a doubt, recommend the wonton soup and the shredded pork with fried tofu. Other ones were also delicious but those were just my...
