Tucked away off Pecos and 67th in the Midtown neighborhood is The Early Bird Restaurant. A hidden gem that I'm not sure enough people know about! We went in at 8am on Saturday morning and it was completely empty! The restaurant has a cool high class coffee shop vibe with high top tables, bar seating and cool, hip decor! The menu is filled with classic items that all homemade and cooked to order! We got the chicken fried chicken and eggs and the Biscuit and gravy with a waffle. The chicken fried chicken came with a large batter fried chicken brest that was crispy on the outside and juicy in the middle. The batter was well seasoned and the cook was perfect! It's covered in a sausage gravy that is hot and flavorful! The EB crispy potatoes that come on the side are also made very well! Big chunks of potatoes that are well seasoned, crispy with fluffy pillowy insides! The over-easy eggs were done exceptionally! Hot runny yolks and firm cooked whites. Just the way they're supposed to be. Each meal comes with a serving of Arugala, roasted tomatoes and a fried shishito pepper. A nice little burst of color and freshness to the plate. The biscuit and gravy was also very good. My dad said it was one of the best he had ever had!! The GIANT homemade biscuit was buttery and fluffy! It came with a giant serving of potatoes and large portion of gravy filled with chunks of sausage and bacon! The waffle was perfect as well! A crisp sweet crust with a soft airy inside. Sprinkled with powdered sugar and finished nicely with butter and warm maple syrup! The staff was always checking on us and made sure to keep our coffee and waters topped off the whole time! All in all this place is amazing and needs to be shown love!!...
Read moreThe food is usually pretty good, but is sometimes served pretty cold. The takeout orders from here only come home right about 25% of the time though - more often these orders often have missing or incorrect items. When we have called in to fix (~ half the time things are wrong). The managers are usually friendly and helpful at resolving issues. Sadly though, it’s the owner who is more often crazy condescending, disrespectful, or just downright rude to even his more loyal local customers (even when they’ve spent thousands $$$ at his locations in the last year). He’s even accused my partner of lying when he came in to redeem a free entree credit offered by his manager at his other location from a messed up order of double eggs there.
When I spoke to him directly today about the overall frequency of mistakes on our takeout orders his response is “then why do you keep ordering from us, just move on to another place if you don’t like our service.” So - quite clearly he doesn’t actually value his repeat customers or their business if they do ever bring his attention to take accountability regarding missing items that were paid for or to fix incorrect orders / mistakes.
I really do hope this location succeeds for the sake of our neighborhood overall. It’s doubtful to me that they will longterm though if their best response to critical feedback is to send regular customers elsewhere. This is how they treated us, some more frequent patrons of both locations …so I guess just...
Read moreWhen we arrived, there were two other parties in the whole restaurant. From that time, we were made to feel like we were an inconvenience. Staff was not friendly, did not greet us, and just silently led us to the table.
When ordering food, I informed the server of nut allergies, to which she mumbled something about gluten. If we didn't have an epi pen with us, we would have left at that point.
The space is adorable, and portions are decent for the pretty high breakfast food prices. As far as the food: my 6 year old ordered the "pick three" breakfast plate; pancake was ok, eggs were decent, HUGE portion of fresh fruit uncharacteristic for kids meals. I got the biscuits and gravy. The biscuit was hard almost all the way to the middle, and the gravy was way too salty--very disappointing; my meal was not worth the $16 I paid for it.
As we were leaving (at that time, we were the only patrons inside), 3 members of staff stood there--one, I believe is owner or management. Not one of them looked in our direction or acknowledged us.
I really wanted to like this place, but due to abysmal customer service, food handling safety concerns, and overall "meh" food, I give it two stars (one for the fruit side and one for portion sizes) and will not...
