BAD VALUE - Extremely over priced for the size of the portions and overall quality of the food.
We eat out at a sushi restaurant weekly or twice a week. We hadn’t been here for about a year because of the shrinkflation we experienced here before, so we decided to give it another shot. Bad decision.
Matsumoto used to be good before the new ownership came in in August or September of 2024. It has very much gone downhill in my opinion.
I ordered the sashimi dinner for $30 and started laughing when she set it down on the table. The fish portion sizes were about as big as a $.50 piece and there was only two per order of sashimi. That's 10 tiny little slivers of not the best fish for $30. Are you kidding me? I guess they did also give me a small bowl of sushi rice, so that makes up for the other missing $21 right? Is this a joke?
We also had the king salmon nigiri. Once again, the pieces were no bigger than a book of matches. Are you kidding me? $9 for this? Two tiny, thin portions of king salmon atop an average size mound of rice for nine dollars?? Wow. Where are the dancing girls?
We ordered a rainbow roll and it looked like a miniature, skinnier version of a California roll with a few very thin slivers of fish but two giant slivers of avocado on top. LMAO. $16.50 for this one and it's about half as much in quality and quantity as any other sushi bar's rainbow roll for less than $15. Now I feel like I'm just getting ripped off here.
The service was also very lackluster. We had dirty plates in front of us for much of the meal, and my drink was refilled one time and was empty for the majority of the meal.
The tables are too close together, as my chair was bumped into consistently throughout the meal.
Yet again, new owners came in and ruined something that was good. I've seen it happen countless times with restaurants from coast to coast. Unfortunate.
We will no longer return to Matsumotto.
I give this place one more year tops, unless they change the quantity of the food to better compete with other, nearby, far better sushi...
Read moreWe went in for our first time on 2/14 and it was amazing and great food that made us go again the next day and this time for take out the lady named Jody or Jodi that took my order I specifically told her I want to customize my special order like I did the day before and to my understanding the day before the waitress said the special order is exactly only what we want in the roll of our sushi so I told Jody I wanted ONLY shrimp tempura cream cheese and avocado only to find out it also had lettuce as if I ordered the regular shrimp tempura roll although I did the special order i got it with lettuce. I told Jody we said only wanted shrimp tempura avocado and cream cheese in a nice manner bc I understand what it’s like to deal with this situation in a different perspective and she straight away was giving attitude and gaslighting saying no I ordered the shrimp tempura roll and lettuce typically comes in the roll although I said I wanted the special roll and only what I wanted previously mentioned. she wouldn’t let me talk and kept saying she was right and screw us basically I was frustrated bc all I wanted was to get this fixed and she just didn’t seem to care of what I wanted fixed. she said if it was the restaurants fault they would fix it but bc it’s our fault that we didn’t know any better it’s our fault.”my boyfriend that was next to me said we were willing to give the wrong order back and she rolled her eyes while typing on the iPad aggressively reordering it correctly how we asked for it and finally decided to help. She finally helped us after a long 5 min of arguing saying we were wrong. She then said “ just for future reference you have to ask for it without lettuce “ which I appreciate her telling us but her tone of voice and attitude was just unnecessary and unprofessional and made us feel like we didn’t feel valued or respected as a customer and specifically said we wanted only shrimp tempura cream cheese and avocado. Other than that the...
Read moreMatsumotto Sushi and Grill, one of my top 3 sushi places in the Denver metro area. My top 3 for sushi is an arduous title to obtain haha. I was actually floored! For most people, they will search based on pricing and stars. I am probably like most, though I start with stars and reviews.
I am beyond picky about my sushi. Actually, I am more a sashimi fan. There are some strict guidelines and rules on smells and texture I kind of hold tight to for my sashimi. Matsumotto blew my expectations out of the water. The food blew my mind! I ordered the Kobe beef stir fried rice to share. Okay, didn’t share. Their warm spider roll 🤯🖐🏻Mind. Blown. Yes, completely. We ordered a few sushi rolls, including their Spicy California roll… bees knees. Impressive. Impeccable. And their Teriyaki Beef Bento Box for my non sushi fan in the family. It was inhaled. The tempura vegetables were not just equally the best part, but probably the/one of the best tempura’d vegetables dishes/sides I have ever tried. The light silkiness of the batter, the even, golden, delicate, crispy hot fry of the tender squash and root vegetables, the soft but perfect al dente of the broccoli.was just flawless.
Let’s just say, Mastunotti Sushi and Grill, tops everything off with their amazing presentation, kind, quick service, and amazing prices. For good and great sushi, I am willing to pay good and great money. For the best sushi, I never would think that I would be paying 1/3 if the price I normally do for good sushi.
Definitely make a reservation for the evening hours and weekends. Word is getting out. You can normally get in when you would like though! It’s the perfect place to eat anytime. The best place to eat when you are feeling like premium sushi. Great job, Matsumotto...
