Why Fly To Israel When THE BEST Middle Eastern Food Is Here In Westport
I have spent time in Israel, and enjoyed some absolutely wonderful Middle Eastern cuisine. Well, it is absolutely remarkable to me that we have Layla’s Falafel at 1535 Post Road East, in Westport, CT with the very best Middle Eastern food.
My favorite was a fresh grilled branzino that was so perfectly flavored it rivaled any fish I have ever had, 2nd only to a succulent meal straight out of Lake Cuomo in Italy 40 years ago, that I will never forget.
The hummus is so rich and of the earth that it does transport me back to my months in Israel; same with the tabouleh and the chicken shishlik.
This is not a fancy affair; rather an immaculate store in a small shopping strip, but one filled with originality. (Feel free to bring your own wine.) I met Dino the owner, who showed me meat pies that were being made, and asked if I had ever seen anything like it. My response? The last time I saw (and tasted) something like this was from my Grandmother Nanny, decades ago.
As great, light, flavored and traditional the food (and by the way the completely real Turkish coffee), what gave me the most pleasure was the world of smiles that surrounded me. Yes, every customer was clearly happy, but Dino and all of his employees were filled literally with the joy of serving the absolutely very best to every customer, and all at a very fair price.
What fun! A must visit spot, with restaurants also in Trumbull, Fairfield and Stamford. By the way, call ahead for the branzino, which takes 30 minutes to cook and is so popular, it can...
Read moreLayla's Falafel is a Mediterranean GEM in Westport! The owner, Dino, is so warm and welcoming and service is top notch. Seating is plentiful, comfortable and the space and bathrooms are very clean. I like meeting friends here for lunch and have even done business meetings here. Love the hustle and bustle behind the counter. The food is incredible. The hummus and puffy pitas are a great starter. Every meat wrap, pita, platter is plentiful, healthy and fresh and delicious. The prices are so reasonable for the amount of food you get. Don't forget to take home some falafel, goodies from the case (mediterranean pizzas, baklava and more) for the family. Dino, please bag and sell those savory seasoned fried pita chips in the store. P.S. Walk a few doors down to get the best foot reflexology massage ever! A perfect date with friend or...
Read moreSamantha greeted my wife and I just after opening with a big smile and a brief overview of the menu. She was absolutely delightful and went out of her way to make us feel at home. I had researched how good the falafel was but it far exceeded my expectations. They chop up the tomato, onion and cucumber salad instead of leaving it in big chunks. This ensures each bite is a uniform symphony of all the flavors with the crispy but light falafel and the creamy tahini. It was honestly the BEST falafel pita I’ve ever eaten! The hummus and Greek salad were delicious and fresh but oh man, I’m going to be dreaming of that falafel. When we went to pay Samantha slipped a baklava into our to go bag on the house. How about that for hospitality?! Way to go Samantha, Layla (momma)...
