I've been going to City Fish for many years and have bragged about the great tasting fillets used in their fish and chips...big fan!!!
I went today and spent over $25 for 5-pieces of fish and fries. Well, the fries are not the same fries they have been serving for years. They are the regular fries you can buy at any grocery store.
They were a bit over-cooked, but I ate them nonetheless. With the exception of 2 of the pieces, the fillets averaged at least 1/2 inch in thickness and about 5 inches long.
Two of the pieces were the usual thickness, over an inch thick, but they too, were not very long. Overall, I was extremely disappointed! It is not the portions that I remember.
I went up to the eat-in area and began my meal with great disappointment. So, I wasn't in a very good mood. Nonetheless, I ate because I was hungry and the two larger pieces of fish were very good, but still small, not the usual size.
Then, one of the employees decided to take a break in the eating area and began a conversation that me and another couple could easily hear; I didn't want to hear about their personal business while I was eating.
In closing, I will not be going to City Fish again! Major disappointment for me because I have such a big fan of City Fish!
However, please do not let my opinion deter you from feasting on their seafood. They have been and continue to be a reputable provider of fresh fish and take out.
Across the board, food prices have gone up, portions have decreased in size, and some taste altering ingredients have been changed in order to make ends meet, and for some, just to make more money!
City Fish has and continues its commitment to quality food, even though, as I see it, they have cut some corners on portions and the price is definitely up there.
If I had the resources, I would eat at City Fish at the very least once a week, despite my observations. I just can't afford it!!
Never bought any fresh fish there, but I know it has to be good. Too bad, now I will never know. I will...
Read moreI bought six live soft shell crabs at City Fish on a Saturday past only after having an in depth discussion with several of the managers/employees that the crabs would live in the refrigerator until Sunday when I wanted to clean them and serve them to guests. Unfortunately no such luck and the crabs were dead Sunday morning. I went back to City Fish Monday and instead of giving me a credit or anything (which I frankly expected), the manager on duty as he identified himself tried to tell me that they donât guaranty that the crabs are alive, only that they are âfresh.â Foolish me but I thought there were only two choices for buying live seafood: dead or alive; I didnât know that there was a third choice of âfresh.â He tried to convince me that cleaning and eating a dead but âfreshâ crab was fine, which is utter nonsense and unsafe of course. I tried to explain that he was wrong (I have lived and sailed on the water for 50+ years and know BS about seafood when I hear it) but he maintained his crazy and unsafe position (note to readers-donât clean and eat a dead crab-unlike Princess Bride there is no third category of ânot quite dead yet.â Live crabs are either that or not). Bigger issue is that they would not even entertain for a moment the idea of standing behind their âof course no problem statementâ that the crabs would live until Sunday in the refrigerator, which I explained was the only reason I bought them. So there are plenty of other options on shopping for seafood in the area (Whole Foods for one) and I have no intention of giving my business to a company that treats their customers so shabby and tries to peddle bizarre (and unsafe) ideas in an attempt to justify a...
Read moreCity Fish was my go-to fish monger in Hartford county but I think theyâve transitioned to a commercial fish vendor for restaurants with a small retail business that they donât value much anymore. The last 3x Iâve been, thereâs been an UNUSUALLY STRONG fish smell. Yesterday, I bought a swordfish $24/lb, and 3 jumbo shrimp $30/lb By the time I get home, it smelled so bad that my girlfriend who was in another room asked why does that shrimp smell so strong? I asked for ice but was told âwe canât because of cross contaminationâ. Weird since NOBODY wears gloves and is handling all different kinds of fish. And all the fish is cut/filleted on the SAME CUTTING BOARD. When I questioned the girl behind the counter her answer changed to âitâs company policy that we donât give iceâ City Fish is the ONLY fish monger Iâve ever been that doesnât give ice. Didnât help that it was 85 degrees with 80% humidity. Youâd think theyâd offer ice as a courtesy to their customers on a day with the extreme heat/humidity. Ended up having to throw away $30/lb shrimp. Last time I buy fish there. Whole Foods isnât better but the fish doesnât smell like itâs gone and they give you ice...
