Rating: β β β β β (5/5)
A stone's throw from the bustling Los Angeles is Whittier's own sanctuary of morning indulgence - The Original Pancake House. Nestled in a cosy corner of this quaint town, this establishment's name may be unassuming, but it carries a rich history and an even richer menu, guaranteeing a memorable dining experience that leaves you yearning for more.
The Original Pancake House delivers the quintessence of American breakfast comfort food with a unique touch. Their menu is an enchanting labyrinth of delectable choices that caters to every palate.
A personal favorite has to be their signature 49er Flapjacks - delicate, crepe-like pancakes that are thin, yet fluffy. There's an art to creating such an intricate texture, a testament to the eatery's devotion to their craft. These pancakes, served with a drizzle of pure maple syrup, embody the concept of simple pleasure.
The bacon at The Original Pancake House is a league of its own. Thick-cut and cooked to a perfect balance of crisp and tender, it complements any dish you pair it with, adding a savory, smoky layer that contrasts beautifully with the sweeter offerings.
For the lovers of hearty, southern comfort food, the biscuits and gravy are an absolute delight. The biscuits are fluffy and buttery, forming a perfect base to the rich, creamy gravy that carries a whisper of spice. It's a dish that envelopes you in a comforting culinary hug, making you feel right at home.
But the accolades don't stop at the food. The Original Pancake House offers a warm, friendly atmosphere that enhances the dining experience. The interior is welcoming with its classic diner setup, and the service is attentive, without being intrusive.
What truly sets this place apart is its consistency in quality and taste. Regardless of what you choose from the menu - be it the 49ers, the bacon, the biscuits and gravy, or even the other countless options - everything is delicious.
In conclusion, The Original Pancake House in Whittier is a treasure trove of breakfast delights, serving up dishes that not only satiate your hunger but also your soul. It's the embodiment of the phrase "the way to a person's heart is through their stomach". Don't just take my word for it, make a visit and experience it for yourself. It is, without a doubt, the breakfast venue of choice...
Β Β Β Read moreI consider myself to be pretty good at searching out and discovering good food places to eat. However, this particular discovery (OPH) was considerably different.
My companion and i had a deep craving for waffles. Trying to find out what's in the area, i found OPH.
Got to the restaurant, i ordered the apple waffle, my companion (she) ordered the plain waffle. We both added bacon and scrambled eggs to the order.
Now, i have to say..when i ordered the apple waffles, i had a certain image in my head as to how the waffle would look. (There weren't any images available on the menu to see the actual finished product). (We had to use an app based scanner to view the menu.)
The image i had in my mind was a large fluffed waffle with sliced apples bathed in an apple cinnamon glaze spread across the waffle and maybe a tinge of whipped cream. Table syrup, not a necessity.ππ
In reality, i got a very flat pancake sized waffle topped with cinnamon powder that comes with a small container of apple syrup. ππ
Apparently, the diced apples are in the batter of the waffle mixture. π
Greatly disappointed by it's presentation and subsequent taste, i sent the waffles back and i ordered the short stack of strawberry pancakes.
What a world of difference! ππΌπ .. Three small sized pancakes flowing abundantly with strawberries and whipped cream. Table syrup not needed. It was exactly what my mouth wanted to experience! πππ
Ok, as to the bacon - thick slabs, but it was very salty π¨. The eggs - plain and unseasoned; very basic, at best. My girl, she too wasn't at all impressed with the overall taste of her order.
There being any acclaim to this particular restaurant's food menu items, pancakes would clearly be its forte. Everything else is what it is.
Customer service was great. The staff was very friendly and personable ππΌ
Overall, OPH gets 2 1/2 stars. I expected a better food tasting experience. Unfortunately, it didn't hit the...
Β Β Β Read moreI am not a fan of elaborate or "hungry person" type of breakfasts. I'm a minimalist breakfast person. My greatest fear is having to eat at IHOP, the tables are always sticky from syrup.
So I got dragged to the Original Pancake House, a place I vowed never to go. For the previous 50 years it had been a fish restaurant. Some how that just didn't fit well with me to now be serving pancakes were I previously ate halibut and snapper.
I must admit I was surprised that I actually enjoyed the restaurant and said I would happily go back. I had CrΓͺpes, they had a selection of types. There were a number of menu options beyond the standard pancake and syrup combinations. I wished they had blintzes and a couple other things, but in general their selection was far better than I had anticipated.
There were four of us at the table, everyone ordered something different. We all thought the food was prepared well and tasted good. I didn't see anyone at other tables that seemed unhappy with the food or sending anything back.
That was the good stuff, now the not so good stuff. Service was very slow and uneven. It took us some time before our order was taken, that is okay as they are always fairly busy on weekends, this was a Saturday around 11am. I guess this was technically brunch. I have been told their service is not the best regardless of day or time of day. Of the four of us we each got our meal at a different time, sort of annoying when you plan to eat together. We noticed some tables were served much more promptly than others. They have a sign on the table limiting you to 90 minutes. We joked that from the time we sat down until the last of us was served it was almost 90 minutes.
The Original Pancake House is only open until 2pm, so no breakfast for dinner.
The not so good things are probably the only things keeping this restaurant from...
