Ordered a cake almost a week (6 days) in advance using the online ordering option. I had never been here before and when I walked in there were a few folks browsing a deli/pastry bar. I noticed a man with a cake box and he was being checked out so I followed him. I was struck by the rudeness the older gray haired lady behind the counter treated this man. When she was done, she looked up and rudely asked me if I was next. I motioned toward those browsing and said there are others here before me but I am here to just pick up a cake. I gave her my name and she hollered into the back. No one came with the cake. She went to helping the other customers. She again hollered this time at me from across the store and asked what kind of cake it was and said I must have ordered it yesterday. I explained that I had ordered it almost a week ago and have an email confirmation of that transaction. In the meantime, a worker comes out of the back with a pan of food. He starts to put something on the top of the food when this same woman hollers out to him to stop; to use gloves; and that everyone is looking. Apparently, if no one is looking then you can violate health department food safety handling procedures. I grimace to think what goes on in the back. After waiting patiently and taking in the continuing antics of this woman, she again speaks to someone in the back regarding my cake. It's become quite apparent that my order had not been completed. Eventually, a very nice lady comes from the back and brings me a cake. I then wait to be checked out by the older lady. The older lady did not give me a receipt. There was no apology for the delay or acknowledgement of their mistake. Just here's a cake now go. She never greeted me in a friendly manner when I arrived nor thanked me when I left. She is the cake Nazi of Wichita (like the soup Nazi in New York). Perhaps, she is an owner of this business and in her arrogance has forgotten that customers deserve good, friendly customer service. This cake was a special request for a birthday dinner. I had eaten this cake at other events in the past and was very disappointed in the cake that I purchased. It tasted watery and there was very little flavor. I paid $34 for a sub par cake. For all I know since my order was not ready, this cake could have been thrown together at the last minute or was old. Either way this entire experience was disappointing. Health department really should investigate the back of the house of this facility given the statement made by the older lady to the employee. Read moreI have never had a bad product from Bagatelle however they're quite out of the way so I don't get there often. I go when I can I usually buy many different items to enjoy for the week. That said they don't seem to value their customers on a level that would make you feel they really care about your patronage. The staff who take your order are usually very curt if not outright impatient or at worst rude. I pulled up at 4:55pm in the parking lot, I was one of two cars in the lot, and they literally turned the sign around and locked the door as I walked towards it with my 8yo son. Nice. They are under no obligation to stay open 5 minutes late for me but in a world with ever increasing options I think I will explore them. But their baguette is rather good if you are curious. EDIT 12/01/2025 I decided to give Bagatelle another try whilst visiting a Rec Center near there and I was not disappointed. I am very impressed with their dedication to setting right any dissatisfied customer's issues, if they are able. I do appreciate the response to my original review from Bagatelle and I wanted to let them know with my business. Delicious bread at very reasonable price and many options in the way of sweet treats and savory snacks. Will absolutely visit again. EDIT 07/31/25 I have been back to Bagatelle several times since my initial review (at the top). Every time I have had great service and great food. Today was pretty special. The wonderful lady who served us was so kind and thoughtful. She gave my son a free cookie, and then told him about how she had been a school teacher for 35 years, and asked him about himself whilst telling him about some kids she had taught in the past. We chatted for a few minutes and even though it was close to closing time I felt no pressure to hurry. We purchased a sampling of amazing cookies, a few croissant, zatar pita chips, and a beirock. After being on hold for over 6 minutes I called back. The second time a different person answered the phone and I told them I was put on hold saying they were going to grab a pen and a paper and I hope they have one ready as I do not want to be on hold for that long again. She replied saying "we are not obliged to take your order if there was someone ahead of you." My reply was if that was the case they should have been honest about it rather than lying saying they were going to grab a pen a paper because a customer will understand that rather than a lie. There was no apology given but a rude dont care attitude. It isnt that there aren't other bakeries but simply thought of helping a neighborhood bakery. But I didn't place the order nor would I ever go to this bakery for any reason ever again. Never have I ever experienced such unprofessional service from any food establishments ever visited anywhere. Horrible. You should match the service with your product. If your service is as horrible as it is now, your product won't last for too long. There are other bakeries in town that has both. Dont lie to the customers. Be honest, customers will understand, don't insult anyone by lying. And if a mistake was made, learn to accept and apologize rather than being rude and impolite.
