Los Compadres Mexican Grill — Restaurant in Wichita

WE LOVE Los Compadres!!! We eat here weekly. LOL this is the nicest, most affordable, tastiest Mexican food in Wichita.

• UPDATE * We're updating our rating, dropping it from a five to a two. When they first opened, we abandoned our favorite location, El Agave, to experience something new. The food was great and the proportions were large, all for a great price. The customer service wasn't great and that should have been a red flag, but we gave them a chance considering they had just opened. There are two excellent waiters and a hostess, but the rest of the waiting team and young man at the door are simply awful. We visited on Cinco de Mayo and there was a wait, which is understandable. There was plenty of bar space available so we requested to have a drink at the bar while we waited for our table. The host said they were too busy and that we couldn't have a drink at the nearly empty bar. I explained to him that we were simply going to have a beverage, not eat. He said that we weren't allowed and refused service. We left and went to El Agave where we were kindly greeted set at the bar and enjoyed amazing jalapeño margaritas while we waited to be seated. Today we visited Los Compadres, our favorite Mexican food, which is very close to our home. It was my wife and me, next to another couple at another table. The rest of the restaurant was empty. There was an employee sleeping on the couch in the lounge when we arrived. When he stood up, half way through our meal, it was obvious he was intoxicated and struggled to the kitchen with the help of our waiter. Before we left he had already passed out again on the couch. When our waiter arrived we requested jalapeño margaritas. He replied, "we are out of jalapeños." We asked for house margaritas instead and he said he can only do strawberry, mango, or lime.... We chose lime.... Which is the house margarita. We then ordered guacamole as an appetizer. The dish was much smaller than what is usually given to us. Then we ordered chicken fajitas to share as we always do with a side of jalapeños. Funny how you're out of jalapeños to put in a Margarita but you will bring them as a side. Usually, the fajitas will satisfy me and my wife. We even have enough to share for the next day. Today, there wasn't even enough to fill us up. The amount of chicken was virtually nonexistent; it was all onion and bell pepper. The waiter appeared to be in a rush to get us out and even changed out of his uniform before we even asked for our check. Towards the end of our meal he prepared himself a dining table filled with food for himself. The fajitas that he had made for himself was the size of fajitas WITH CHICKEN that we usually receive. We left a 9% tip which was more than he deserved and immediately went to El Agave to have jalapeño margaritas.... And ordered...

My coworkers and I just had the single worst dining experience of our entire existence at this location.

We showed up at 11:30a on a Tuesday knowing $1 tacos usually means busy. There were 8 of us but there were at least 10-12 open tables and maybe 3 other parties there at the same time, and only 2 parties came in after us. We all ordered water except one person that got a Mexican Coke. All of our orders were simple $1 tacos of various proteins

At almost noon we finally get our drinks. We tell the waitress that going around the table person 1,2,4 and 5 have to leave because we didn’t expect the wait to be so long so could she just bring 4 boxes with those ordered. 30 minutes later and some of our food starts to come out, one order comes out (3 tacos) but there’s only one. One order comes out with the right number of tacos but the wrong proteins. Two orders come out but the waitress (not ours) has smashed the top plate into the bottoms sour cream which attached and plopped on the table and she walks away without even acknowledging it.

We tell them what’s missing and the waitress goes to the kitchen. Arguing ensues. One in our party hops up to talk to the kitchen. She notices a piece of plastic is on top of one of the tacos they’re about to box up.

It’s now 1 o clock and we have a table with a stack of tickets, we have no idea who’s is who’s because the orders came out all wrong or missing something so we can’t make sense of it.

We ended up having to walk out empty handed. We were there almost 2 hours and no one ate. The waitress seemed nice but confused by the menu and I’m not sure if it was a communication issue with the kitchen or what but the total disregard and awareness of the whole situation was beyond insane. No manager stopped by. No one offered us a discount. We are all just really hangry and disappointed now that we are back at work. I’ve been here before and while it was a hair slow it wasn’t this bad.

TLDR; 8 people ordered simple orders and water, didn’t receive water until 30 min later, 4 people had to leave an hour and no food in and we asked for boxes to box their food up, 4 of the remaining peoples orders came out incorrect, missing things, and an hour and a half in had to leave empty handed because nothing was addressed correctly...

Short version: great place, great food (street tacos) great service, highly recommended

Los compadres east has taken over the old Jerseys location in East Wichita with a nice remodel.

It was taco Tuesday so perfect opportunity to check out this new location.

I had some idea what to expect as I’ve been to the West location before.

I walked in, was quickly greeted and had chips and salsa served within a minute.

Chips were pretty standard, nice and crisp, salsa had a little bit of a kick, I enjoyed it.

I ordered 2 carne asada Street tacos and 3 Pollo Asada street tacos.

They served me water as requested with a straw which I handed back to the server,that way it can get put back into circulation for somebody that needs it rather than leaving it on the table for whoever buses the table to toss away,

Now onto the food, what you really came here for. my order was prepared and presented within just a few minutes, very quick service what is nicely plated, I’ve included some pictures for you to view it yourself.

The chicken was cooked thoroughly and had a nice taste with the white onion and cilantro.

The carne Asada was cooked well, had a couple of bites that were a little tough but all in all I was very pleased with their tacos.

They offered a couple of more saucesWith the meal, a green sauce and a different red sauce, the red sauce was a little hot for me but I really like the green sauce highly recommended.

All these dollar taco Tuesdays that are going around currently in Wichita are a great value for the consumer, don’t forget to tip the wait staff based on the retail value of the meal ticket. I had great service, also had management come by and ask if everything was ok. nice touch!
