Sandfly's Southern Soul — Restaurant in Wilmington Island

I ate at this establishment on yesterday. When I walked in the owner was extremely pleasant and friendly, and he thoroughly explained the menu options to me and how the process works in terms of purchasing your food. He even gave me a sample of the banana cobbler, which was amazing. However, what spoiled the entire experience was the waitress. it was only one waitress, so it’ll be easy to know who I’m referring to. She was very brass and not welcoming or kind. When my food arrived, I asked her for some hot sauce and ketchup and she said, “well you need to taste your food first before you add anything to it” in a very abrupt tone. Then, I said, “no, I would like some hot sauce and ketchup please and she said, “that food has enough seasoning. You really need to taste it before you put anything on it.” I said can I have, in a more demanding tone, some ketchup and hot sauce. She then, with an attitude, brought me the condiments that I requested. I watched her several times walk by my table and look at my glass that was empty and would not refill my drink. I intentionally did not even ask her. I did not want to see or speak to her again. Her whole energy gives off a spirit of negative intimidation . It could make a customer dining there not even want to talk to her. but, as a teacher, I’m never intimidated by any person. Especially not a mean waitress.

I will say, when I complained to the owner, he attentively listened to what I had to say and understood, and even came back again and addressed my concerns. he made me feel welcomed and he made me feel as if I was seen, and my issues were heard and that something would be done. My boyfriend (Wes), myself, and his mom and dad (Carole and R.L.) visited your establishment today. I couldn’t find how to review you on Facebook so I just wanted to tell you about our visit. Ms. Dawn was absolutely the best and most hilarious person. She was so attentive to everyone in the restaurant, and she also made us full on belly laugh every time she came by. I didn’t catch the name of the owner at the front, but he was amazing too! He was so friendly and answered all of our questions as well as every other customer that came in when we were there.

Now for the food!!!! Oh my goodness it was southern deliciousness. 😋 I got the green beans, the squash casserole, and the Mac and cheese. I even ate half of my boyfriend’s Mac and cheese since he was full. He said the fried chicken and the baked chicken were delicious! The salad side plate was very good according to Wes’ dad and he liked his chicken too! His mom also loved her food. The Mac and cheese was absolutely crazy good! So cheesy and tasty! The green beans had just the right amount of salt to make them perfect. The squash casserole was enjoyed by all of us. Oh and don’t forget those mini corn muffins!!!! Holy moly!

Now let’s get to Ms. Dawn! She took care of us so incredibly well. She was funny and got everything we needed and even things we needed that we hadn’t even known yet. She was so lighthearted and funny. Wes’ dad said she was such a nice lady and I just adored her. Thank you Ms. Dawn. And to top off how perfect she was, she let us taste the amazing banana pudding just because Wes had said how he had heard so many people loving it.

Hubby and I have been trying to get here since January, we finally made it!! Everything was beyond amazing and well worth the wait! Food was top notch, all of it!! Servings so huge we had dinner for that night! Fried fish and chicken seasoned to perfection!! Green limas, greens tasted like they came straight out of my kitchen so you know it was good!! This is truly Southern Soul Food! Some places have a few good dishes and others lack, not here!! Everything we had was so good! Topping off this great experience was the kind and attentive staff!! Wayne and Dawn were the best hosts ever! They were funny, engaging and just so genuine. Ritchie and Chelsea also came out engaging with us like we were old friends. They all made us feel welcomed and showered us with a few samples of other dishes which did not disappoint. We left stuffed and looking forward to our next visit. The vibe throughout the restaurant was so fun, strangers were engaging with each other. That’s what good food and an even better atmosphere does. It was like being in your own home eating with family. This hidden gem is a blessing! Don’t let it take you months like it took us, get in here yesterday!! Thank you guys so much and we will see...
